LEADERSHIP PROGRAM 2014–2015 Year in Review

Leadership Excellence. Lifelong Impact. Inspiring and developing our Scholars; serving our campus, the region, and the world.

C

an this really be my final reflection letter? . . . Thank you for your overwhelming support, for believing in me, and for your smiling faces.

Many things in this life I owe to you. This Program is family. We lean on one another, we cheer for one another, and we challenge one another . . . I can’t imagine who I might have been without this opportunity. Sierra Galloway, Class of 2015 Senior Reflection Letter, May 24, 2015

FROM OUR FOUNDER The Roan Scholars Leadership Program is designed to attract students with demonstrated outstanding leadership potential to ETSU. We give these well-rounded, high-performing individuals unique out-ofthe-classroom opportunities and experiences to further develop their leadership skills and expand their horizons. The Roan Program is firmly established; however, we constantly strive to improve: We have grown from awarding four Scholarships in our first year (fall 2000) to seven per year now…on our way to over 10 per year. We will add five new Tennessee counties to our selection area this year which will bring the total number of eligible counties to 26 (15 in Tennessee, seven in North Carolina, and four in Virginia). We will also add an Assistant Director this fall to our staff to ensure that we maintain Program quality and appropriate personal contact with current Scholars and Alumni. Looking forward, I envision The Roan Program having: At least 50 Scholars on campus The organizational structure to support these Scholars National and international recognition of Roan Alumni accomplishments An endowment exceeding $25 million The involvement of Roan Scholars on campus and throughout the region makes both stronger. We MUST expand Program awareness and financial support to achieve our true potential for excellence and positive impact. THANK YOU for the ETSU and community interest and support which have brought The Roan Program to its current prominent level. If you are not already participating in some way, please join us.

FROM THE DIRECTOR What a year it’s been! Since our first Class arrived at East Tennessee State University in 2000, Roan Scholars have been leaders on campus, and this past academic year was no exception. From student government, where one Scholar served as Chief of Staff (and another was appointed to succeed him for this coming year), to student organizations; from Athletics (where a Roan freshman earned Academic MVP honors with the football team) to Greek Life, Roan Scholars helped lead the way, earning numerous accolades for their excellence. And in the classroom, Roan Scholars continued to set the bar high, as more than two-thirds earned Dean’s List recognition and nearly half achieved a perfect 4.00 GPA for one or both semesters. While Roan Scholars also continued to serve and positively impact the campus in a wide variety of ways, the Roan Class of 2015 left a particularly significant mark - initiating, coordinating, and overseeing the university’s first-ever “Senior Class Gift” campaign. This completely studentled initiative helped generate discussion among students about giving back to their university and serves as a tremendous example for future classes to follow . . . Roan ‘16s, as well as other student leaders on campus, are already discussing ways to take this effort “to the next level” in the coming year. The idea of “giving back” wasn’t just limited to Roan undergraduates . . . including gifts to the Program through the first week of July 2015, Roan Alumni achieved 100 percent financial participation for the first time and are already off to a strong start for the next fiscal year. Our Alumni also contributed their time and support throughout the year, sharing their experiences with current Scholars in “Roan Alumni Speaker Series” talks; serving as members of our Regional Selection Committee; meeting with current Scholars to share career advice; and hosting current Scholars for summer internships. With our sixteenth Roan class arriving on campus in a few weeks, we’re excited about the future. This fall we’ll welcome nine new nominating high schools to our selection process, and an Assistant Director (a new administrative position) to the Roan family. We’ll also continue moving forward in terms of growth and expansion, as we seek to identify the resources necessary to increase both the number of Roan Scholars selected each year, and the opportunities available to those Scholars. None of that is possible without you. We can’t say it enough, but thank you for your gifts and support. Thanks, too, for sharing the Roan story with others; as you consider our current Scholars and Alumni I trust you’ll agree it’s certainly a story worth sharing! We hope to see you in the coming year; please stop by any time you’re near campus.

All the best,

Scott Jeffress 2 | 2014-2015 Year in Review

T

he major theme I have taken away from the past year is

that knowing who you are and what your values are, help to define who you are as a leader. This year with its increased responsibilities has helped me to determine who I am – as a young man and as a leader. Brad Fisher, Class of 2016

Roan Scholars Leadership Program | 41

FROM THE STEERING COMMITTEE CHAIR As we focus on the year ahead, it is important to, first, look back and reflect on the extraordinary growth and accomplishments of the Roan Program. Our Scholars exemplify personal excellence. Choosing to be a Roan Scholar is not only an honor, but a commitment. It is obvious that this responsibility is not only accepted, but embraced, by our Scholars. We have an impressive group who continue to set the bar higher for those to come. I applaud the work of Mr. Louis H. Gump, whose visionary leadership continues to be the beacon for the Scholars to follow. We will always be grateful for the strong support of President Emeritus Paul E. Stanton, Jr. and President Brian Noland. Likewise, we could not have asked for a stronger director and staff, a more impressive list of community donors and volunteers, or a more conducive campus environment for the continued success of our Program. It has been a “perfect storm” of vision, support and a willingness to “put hands into the work to be done.” A point of great pride is our 44 Roan Alumni. I encourage you to read where they are now and how they are making an impact. That is what this Program is all about – equipping these extraordinary individuals with the knowledge, ability, and experience to impact the world! To each of you who has impacted the lives of the Scholars through your service on selection or steering committees; as family members, professors, or advisors; or through financial contributions to support and increase this work, I give you my heartfelt thanks. The best is yet to come!

Nancy Dishner

GIVING BACK . . . The 2014-2015 academic year was an historic one for the Roan, for two reasons:

100% . . . As of early July 2015, EVERY Roan Alumna/us had made at least one financial gift to the Roan – within the past eight months! Over the past three years, in fact, Roan Alumni participation has more than doubled, with total giving increasing ten-fold during that same time period. Senior Class Gift Campaign . . . As part of their “Class Legacy” initiative, members of the Roan Class of 2015 coordinated with the University Advancement Office to establish ETSU’s first-ever Senior Class Gift Campaign. Through their “Leaving Our Legacy” campaign, Roan 15s spoke with students across campus about the importance of giving back to the university and inspired others to follow their lead in making a gift to ETSU before graduation. Congratulations and thank you to the Roan Class of 2015 – and to ALL of our Roan Alumni – on these outstanding achievements!

The Roan Class of 2015: (l-r) Zach McCamey, Sierra Galloway, Alicyn York, Victoria Howard, Michael Stallard Special thanks to our Roan Alumni for sponsoring this year’s Senior Dinner, and for their gifts in honor of the graduating Scholars. ETSU is an AA/EEO employer. Designed by ETSU Printing and Publications. TBR 260-020-15 .75M

T

he year that I’ve had and the year that I’m looking forward to would not have been possible without the Roan.

Thank you for allowing me this amazing opportunity . . .” Millie Robinson, Class of 2017

Letter to the Roan Steering Committee, May 23, 2015

Established in 1997 by Mr. Louis H. Gump, a long-time friend of ETSU, to attract, retain, and develop the region’s best leadership talent, the Roan Program draws its inspiration from Roan Mountain - the highest peak in the area, a motivational sight, and a symbol of the character, strength, and idealism of the region’s people.
