Leadership Excellence. Lifelong Impact. Inspiring and developing our Scholars; serving our campus, the region, and the world.

here are those experiences, though, that alter one’s life completely, and many of those for

me came at the hand of the Roan. Lucas Hitechew, Class of 2014

Letter to the Steering Committee, June 2, 2014

FROM OUR FOUNDER The Roan Scholars Leadership Program is much more than “just a scholarship”. We want to attract well-rounded, highperforming individuals to ETSU and give them out-of-the classroom opportunities and experiences to further develop their leadership skills and expand their horizons. Selection criteria are character, leadership, intellectual curiosity, and physical vigor. Although the Roan Program is now firmly established, we constantly strive to improve. We have achieved Level II recognition in the Tennessee Center for Performance Excellence Awards Program. Director Scott Jeffress will be a TNCPE Examiner this year. That experience will further enhance our Program quality. Our incoming freshman class size has increased from five to seven Scholars; over the next four years the Program will go from 20 to 28 Scholars. And, we want to keep on growing. By 2022 - our 25th anniversary - I envision the Roan having: • 50 Scholars on campus • The organizational structure to support those Scholars • National and international recognition of Roan Alumni achievements • An endowment exceeding $25 million ETSU and our region are, and will continue to be, better and stronger because of the Roan. However, we MUST expand Program awareness and financial support to realize our true potential for excellence and positive impact. Community and ETSU interest and financial support have elevated the Roan Program to its current quality and stature. Each person serving on our committees or involved in our activities has, and demonstrates, Roan Scholar traits. “THANK YOU!” to everyone involved. If you are not already participating, please join us. If you are involved and can increase your investment, please do.

FROM THE DIRECTOR Just a year ago, we launched a new Roan website to go along with a simultaneous foray into the world of social media. Over the past 12 months, we have had a great deal to post, share, and tweet about. Current Scholars excelled in leadership roles across campus and Roan Alumni continued to make their mark both professionally and in their home communities. We challenged current Scholars to set the bar even higher for themselves and their peers – and they responded. We talked regularly about truly living out “leadership excellence” on a daily basis – and they did, in a number of new and impressive ways. Our Alumni sought out new ways of connecting with the Roan – and found them; they worked to make a direct, positive impact on current Scholars – and succeeded. We trust the pages that follow will give you a sense of where we’ve been the past year, who our current Scholars and Alumni are, and what we do. The Year in Review allows us to look back, to celebrate the excellence and impact of our Scholars; and it serves as another way of saying ‘thank you’ to all those who enable us to do what we do. As we prepare to welcome our 15th Roan class to the ETSU campus, we’re also looking forward. The Class of 2018 is our largest ever, but we’re already envisioning even greater growth in the next few years. More Roan Scholars, more opportunities for the area’s top student leaders, more positive impact and benefits for the region – and beyond. We believe the Roan is poised for a period of significant growth and opportunity. And as we kick off the 2014-2015 academic year, we’re excited and energized to begin the work that will transform that vision into reality! It’s been said that the Roan changes lives. As I talk with our Alumni, parents, and friends of the Program, their stories consistently remind me of the truth in that statement. Again, thank you to everyone whose gifts and support make that possible. Thanks, too, for sharing our story with others, as we continue expanding the Roan network. We look forward to sharing the next stage of the Roan story with you. All the best,

Scott Jeffress

T

he past year has been an amazing journey . . . I’ve learned leadership is all about a lot of things. It’s something that can’t be taught in a book, through one exercise or project, or by any one method. Leadership is a lifelong process of learning, doing, reflecting, and repeating – in all areas of life. It’s a lifestyle, and one I’m thankful for being able to develop through the Roan.

Roan Scholars Leadership Program | 39

FROM THE STEERING COMMITTEE CHAIR (OUTGOING) As I reflect on this past academic year I continue to be amazed by the energy, enthusiasm, talents, and accomplishments of our Scholars. It seems like yesterday that our most recent graduates sat before our Steering Committee on Finalist Day, as we made some agonizing decisions about which students would best represent and strengthen our Leadership Program. It is very rewarding to know that our selection process works so well, and that our newest Alumni have been so well prepared for whatever challenges they’ll face in the next few years. This year has been one of progress in attracting financial support for our Program – both from established donors as well as first-time sponsors. Our Roan Alumni continue to support the Program at a high rate; to date, more than 80 percent of them have made contributions. As we increase the number of Scholars in each class, though, and strive to expand their leader development opportunities and experiences, it is essential that we find additional support. We invite you to partner with us on one or more of our initiatives, as we grow the Roan and strive to have an even greater impact on the region. I have been blessed not only to be involved with our Scholars but also to have worked with the truly remarkable group of men and women who comprise the Steering Committee and our Regional Selection Committee. They have devoted many hours of their time to ensure that our Program attracts and selects the very best student-leaders in our region. I am so grateful for their support, and for the ongoing support of Dr. Noland, Dr. Sherlin, Kathy Feagins and Joan VanEaton. Scott Jeffress has continued to provide outstanding leadership for our Scholars as he fine-tunes our programming and encourages our Scholars to not just do every job well, but to do it with excellence. As I conclude my time as Chair of the Steering Committee on June 10th of 2014, I will be succeeded by Dr. Nancy Dishner, who was the first Director of the Roan Program. Dr. Dishner was the perfect choice, then, to work closely with Louie Gump to create and manage the Program. I know she will also do a terrific job as our new Steering Committee Chair. I look forward to staying involved with the Program in the coming years, and to seeing the many great things that lie ahead for the Roan. Sincerely, Tom Krieger

FROM THE STEERING COMMITTEE CHAIR (INCOMING) It is an honor to accept the role of Chair of the Roan Scholars Steering Committee. One of my greatest blessings has been the opportunity to be part of this Program since it began in the year 1997. From the role of Director to that of Steering Committee Chair, I have watched an impressive group of young people accept the responsibility that comes with being a Roan Scholar. I believe the power of the Roan Scholars Leadership Program is in the synergy that has been created with a visionary leader, a supportive campus environment, committed program directors and staff, an engaged and generous regional community, and an inspired selection of Scholars. Over 17 years ago, Louis H. Gump initiated the concept of the Roan Program which, through the efforts and support of numerous people throughout the region, has developed into a strong “magnet” for ETSU and has benefited our entire area. We have always enjoyed strong support from our campus community, first during Dr. Stanton’s tenure, and now with President Noland. Likewise, the Roan has outstanding leadership from Scott Jeffress, Kathy Feagins and Joan VanEaton. Importantly, our strength comes from across our region. Our Steering and Selection committees, countless donors, school system leaders, our Roan Alumni, and our Scholars’ families are a powerful force and extraordinary examples for our current Scholars to emulate. If we need any reassurance that our investment in this program is well placed, we need only to look as far as the young men and women we have chosen as Roan Scholars. Speaking of synergy, can you imagine the power that will come from the network of Roan Alumni in the coming years? Our former Steering Committee Chairs, Louie Gump and Tom Krieger, have set the bar high! I extend my sincere gratitude for their service, guidance and support. My goal will be to follow in their footsteps as we steer this Program into the future. For those who are already part of our work, THANK YOU! There is room for more and plenty of work to be done. Come join us! Respectfully, Nancy Dishner
