EXPLORE THE WORLD AT GRESHAM’S PRE-PREP SCHOOL Explore the World week took place over 5 days in February at Gresham’s PrePrep School in Holt. This initiative was to provide a fun and varied programme where children were introduced to a variety of different countries and cultures to give them a greater appreciation of the world around them.

E

xplore the World week offered a varied selection of events to the different years. Year 3 learned about New Zealand. A number of visitors to the School provided talks to them which included, David Tipling, a wildlife photographer, who gave a fascinating talk about birds in New Zealand, accompanied by his incredible photographs. Mr Adams, Gresham’s Sports Development Director - came to teach the children how to do the Haka (pictured). They demonstrated the moves impressively well and looked suitably fierce, whilst reciting the Maori words. The pupils also benefitted from having two New Zealanders talk to them - Mr

Couborough, from the Flying Kiwi chain of restaurants, talked about the history and location of New Zealand, whilst the current Senior School Gap year student from New Zealand, Lizzie Rajan, came and did a brilliant question and answer session about what it was like to be a child in New Zealand. Throughout the week the children worked in groups researching various topics ranging from famous New Zealanders, insects, mountains, the Maoris and sport in New Zealand. Year 2 learned about Brazil. They learned about the Amazon rainforest and the vast range of animals and birds indigenous to the area. Another parent, Mr Schofield had spent a few weeks living with an Amerindian tribe in the Amazon and talked to the children about his experiences. He gave a very interesting presentation showing wonderful pictures of what it was like to live in a Rainforest. The children learned about the annual Rio de Janeiro carnival and had fun decorating carnival masks and making carnival cocktails using juices from fruits that are grown in Brazil. One of the highlights of the week was when

Mr Waring, Director of Music, Prep School came to do a samba workshop with the children. Children in Year 1 learned about India. The children loved looking at life in India and brought in many interesting items from home for their Show and Tell sessions. One of the highlights was a visit from a Bollywood dancer. She gave all the children decorative Bindis to wear and explained when they are worn in India (pictured). The children dressed in colourful saris, just as children would in Northern India. The dancer demonstrated a basic Bollywood dance routine; the children loved this experience. Explore the World was a wonderful week for both the children and staff which provided an exciting mix of opportunities for the children to appreciate different cultures. Gresham’s Pre-Prep School provides education for 3-8 year olds in the beautiful market town of Holt, North Norfolk.
