Business East Hants is supported by East Hampshire District Council

A bright economic Contacts future for East Hampshire Publisher

Business East Hants Editor

Angela Kiwanuka, EHDC

Our commitment to ensuring that there are high quality jobs for East Hampshire residents continues, and Business East Hants has worked with EHDC to support local businesses to take on apprentices.

Sub-editor Olia Mitskevich, EHDC Design Richard Wells, EHDC Business East Hants members are welcome to submit articles or adverts to: Email: info@businesseasthants.org Address Business East Hants Economic Development Office, East Hampshire District Council, Penns Place, Petersfield, GU31 4EX Tel: 01730 234165 Email: info@businesseasthants.org Website: www.businesseasthants.org

David Joel Chairman, Business East Hants

East Hampshire companies have been able to apply for grants to match fund the wages paid to new apprentices and contribute to training and travel costs where appropriate. 20 new apprenticeships have been created, all of which have lead to permanent jobs and sustainable employment. In addition, the scheme supported 12 pre-apprenticeships, work experience and work trial jobs (page 5).

Employability is an ongoing theme for BEH – we are keen that the skills of the local workforce matches the needs of our businesses. BEH recognises the importance of working with East Hampshire District Council to ensure that council services meet the needs of local business. The series of visits by EHDC Chief Executive Sandy Hopkins to local businesses (pages 16-17) shows the council’s commitment to engage with the business community. EHDC is also funding a PR campaign to raise awareness of this beautiful part of the world. Tourism makes a significant contribution to the local economy, increasingly so as the South Downs National Park attracts more visitors to stay in the area. Recently revised are six self-guided circular walks inspired by local authors, including Jane Austen, Gilbert White and Edward Thomas – read more about these on page 29.

EHDC’s top business brains meet Entrepreneurs, manufacturers and leading figures from hi-tech and traditional industries have been recruited to help secure East Hampshire District Council’s vibrant vision for the future. The first meeting of the council’s non-executive board, whose members include entrepreneur and philanthropist Joel Cadbury, Estee Lauder general manager Mike Gladman, country club owner Martin Shaw, Shell IT expert Paul O’Sullivan, technology boss Sue Clarke and farmer John Ellis, took place on Tuesday. They will advise the council as it seeks to be less reliant on dwindling central government grants and show how private sector business

brains can bridge the gap. Council leader Ferris Cowper, one of three district councillors on the board, says the board is ‘a unique initiative in UK local government’. East Hants is the first local authority in Britain to try such a scheme. Cllr Cowper said: “My long term vision is to create Britain’s first ever tax-free council.” Other members of the board are well-known Grayshott Pottery pioneer Phil Bates, engineer and Harvard Business School graduate Rob Cragg and veteran Hampshire County Councillor Ken Thornber. Cllr Cowper said: “A crucial part of this strategy is to generate strong

EHDC supports local business Businesses in the Petersfield’s Folly Market have been given greater visibility thanks to a new sign installed with the help of East Hampshire District Council. The new sign was requested by Folly Market traders after ‘no fly poster’ regulations in the town limited advertising opportunities. Funded by EHDC and designed by the traders the sign has been placed in the Central Car Park and points the way to a treasure trove of thriving independent retailers. business growth and ever higher levels of employment, not just because that is a massive benefit to our community, but also the increased activity benefits council income streams. “I also hope the board will make a major contribution to the development of multiple business ventures for the council itself to undertake in order to generate new income of around £3m by 2018-19. The formation of the board, called the Non Executive Board, is part of EHDC’s long-term plan to become one of the most business-friendly councils in the country. www.easthants.gov.uk/neb

Hampshire firms given ‘much needed’ route to market through Meet the Buyer Gosport MP Caroline Dinenage praised the annual business matchmaking day that has generated deals worth more than £13 million in the past two years. Celebrating ten years of security for Churcher’s College A Petersfield security company is celebrating its tenth year of guarding one of the town’s most prestigious sites, Churcher’s College at Ramshill. A free site security survey is on offer, to celebrate. The state-of-the-art security contract started out as a security guard patrol with a German Shephard dog named Jaeger. Today, it involves networked links between the Liphook and Petersfield campuses, access control, alarms, key-holding, mobile patrols and remote CCTV monitoring. Security officers can even activate a loudspeaker over the CCTV system to warn off would-be intruders.

David Preston, who set up ADP Security Systems with Alan Day in 1996, has attributed their success to understanding customers and always being flexible to change. He said: “Customer service is a cause that is close to our hearts and that is why we sponsored the Life in Petersfield Business and Community award for customer services this year. My advice to anyone starting up would be, never to take your clients for granted. Always remember, the only reason that you are in business is because of your customers. Deliver a personal service, listen to what they say and be flexible.”

A finalist in Customer Service at the 2013 South Coast Business Awards and shortlisted for Customer Care at the 2013 Security Excellence Awards, ADP Security Systems has also won several security personnel awards.

Parking permits for your staff – flexible, convenient and cost-effective Your staff can save money and time with a workers’ parking permit from East Hampshire District Council. The council is committed to supporting its local businesses and has devised a discount scheme to help those who work in Petersfield and Alton to park cheaply and conveniently. Workers can pick up an annual parking pass for £650, a ten percent discount on the full price, allowing them to park at certain car parks all day. Further discounts are available for those driving low emission cars, with the most environmentallyfriendly vehicles charged just £162 for a year’s permit. Electric and hybrid cars can even park for free. Season tickets are issued to a specific vehicle, with the vehicle registration number shown on the permit.

Scratchcards Some workers do not have access to the same vehicle every day, they may share roles with other staff

members, work limited hours or hold the position on a temporary basis. In these case an annual or six month permit would be unsuitable. To resolve this issue EHDC has launched a scratchcard scheme which can be used on any vehicle on any day, giving local businesses the flexibility they need to succeed. Books of 10 scratchcards can be bought for £30 - significantly cheaper than buying 10 all-day tickets, at the full price of £5.30 each.

Advertise on tickets With thousands of shoppers and visitors using Petersfield and Alton’s car parks every week businesses can also get their message across to local motorists by advertising on each ticket.

Please pass information about these schemes onto your staff or contact the parking office on 0300 555 0705 or email parking.office@havant.gov.uk

Why should I use a Proofreader? You only get ONE chance to create a good impression. If your promotional literature, including your website, or other business documentation contains basic spelling and grammatical errors, your clients will be put off doing business with you. Your spell-checker is only as good as your knowledge and understanding of the English language. By way of an example - if you typed ‘naked’ instead of ‘named’, a spell-checker will not pick it up – how costly could that be? Some people understand grammar and some have difficulty with it. No matter how many times you may read and re-read your work, because you are so familiar with the text and the layout, you will miss obvious errors.

By working with a trained Proofreader on a regular basis you will have peace of mind knowing that you have produced a high quality document. There is more to proofreading, however, than just checking for spelling, grammar and punctuation. Here are some of the most common errors: • Apostrophes: missing them out or using them incorrectly (e.g.who’s/whose) • Words that sound the same but have different spellings and meanings (e.g. hole/whole; effect/affect; compliment/ complement; principle/ principal) A Proofreader will also look at: • Consistency in the use and layout of headings, page numbering, footnotes and references

New Planning rules On April 6 2014 new planning rules came in which allow conversion of shops and farm buildings to residential use without the need to go through the full planning process.

The new changes will not however, apply in the National Park.

The government has introduced a new 3 level of planning, permitted development for non-controversial schemes, prior approval of less ontentious schemes and full planning for potentially controversial schemes.

“The Government acknowledges that for too long we have left buildings in our towns and countryside empty, which could assist in supporting growth and maintaining the vitality of our communities. Like all new proposals, however, there are a number of questions about how the proposals will be considered in practice, as developers and councils grapple with the fine print.”

The new changes mean you can put forward proposals for small schemes and the planning authority will only be able to consider them against a limited range of criteria.

Jon McDermott, Principal Town Planner with The Town Planning Experts, said:

With long experience in both the local and private sectors across southern England, including East Hampshire, The Town Planning Experts are well placed to advise owners and investors what the changes may mean for them, and direct them to the most appropriate uses for their buildings. Maximising your sales with product photography Whatever you are selling the importance of good product photography should not be underestimated. If your customers can’t get the product in their hands to touch, taste, or smell, your pictures have to work twice as hard to do the selling. You need images that instil confidence in your customers and show your product at its tastiest, shiniest, softest or most luxurious. If you’re selling online this is ultimately what makes people ‘add to cart’ and increase your conversion rates. But there’s more to good photography than simply making the products look great. Your images should be of high enough resolution for a variety of uses. Pictures shot solely for the web are seldom of high enough quality for brochure or print purposes. Buyers like to get up close and personal to products when shopping online and fine detail shows that you have nothing to hide. It’s also important to keep your backgrounds clean and neutral as your product is the hero and complicated backgrounds distract people from the item itself. Finally, be sure to choose a photographer that specialises in studio work, as they will have the skills to light and shoot your products properly.

Taking the time to get your product shots right can really help to boost your sales and turn browsers into buyers. If you need product photography for your brochures or website call us now.

Shirley says thank you to TLC TLC (Hospice Services at Home TLC) is a small charity based in Bordon. Partly funded by the Big Lottery Fund, TLC recruits volunteers willing to give up to three hours of their time each week to befriend and support people with life limiting conditions in Surrey, Hampshire and Sussex who are being cared for by a family member or those isolated and housebound. TLC also provides free complementary therapies for both the family carer and those they care for. Shirley lives in Liphook and receives befriending and therapies from TLC. Shirley is a wheelchair user and in constant pain. “My life changed when my doctor recommended I contact TLC. Debra comes and gives me Reflexology once a month, I can’t wait for my therapy sessions, it is so relaxing.

Heidi comes every couple of weeks (as she looks after another lady too) to give me friendship and support. It is wonderful, we talk about the things we enjoy and we joke about husbands and children, we both follow the same spiritual path, she is such a good friend. There is no other service like TLC in Liphook and I am so glad I found TLC and TLC found me”. TLC has a waiting list of people needing befriending and support, full training is given and volunteers are matched with those they can help. First Aid training at the start of life As part of ongoing commitment to increase first aid awareness / skills within the community, training4healthcare collaborated with NCT members, antenatal support staff, breast feeding advisors and Confident Birthing practitioners in Hampshire to provide relevant emergency life saving skills. Antenatal and maternity support staff are required to demonstrate knowledge and skills related to first aid in order to comply with expectations from parents and service levels set by employers. Having the opportunity to consider a full range of first aid scenarios relevant to the antenatal and postnatal period and practice skills in an informal setting was very beneficial for all the practitioners present. This pilot session was booked at the request of Carole Samuda, Confident Birthing practitioner. Confident Birthing Sessions are run by Hampshire Hospitals Foundation Trust to support women who are 28+ weeks pregnant and are free (www. confidentchildbirthhampshire.co.uk).

Tax measures that help farms and SMEs will boost the wider economy Nine out of ten farm businesses are sole traders or family partnerships. They’re among thousands of businesses that have not benefited from Government reducing corporation tax. Yet farming is one of the few success stories during the recession. The NFU’s report, Backing the Business of British Farming, shows agriculture generates £24bn for the economy. Farming enjoys a positive outlook, with demand for food to rise 60% by 2050. So measures that assist SMEs, particularly unincorporated SMEs, will boost agriculture. The NFU welcomed an extra £85m Government support for apprenticeship grants though. “This is great news, but ultimately new entrants will be attracted to agriculture because of its long term

prospects. Farming is critical to our food security and in the UK, we need 60,000 new recruits to agriculture over the next decade,” says Ms Nichols.

Tourism, leisure and hospitality

Literary Walks relaunch to boost tourism The six literary walks in East Hampshire are hugely popular with walkers, both visitors and locals. There is an increasing interest in local heritage and these walks can inform people of our literary history. The East Hampshire Tourism and Marketing Partnership (EHTMP) requested that these walks be revised and relaunched to attract visitors to the area. This has been achieved with the help of volunteers from the partnership who have checked and updated the routes. The PR interest generated from a successful relaunch will help increase awareness of attractions

and accommodation businesses in East Hampshire. The six literary figures behind the walks are: • Jane Austen • Gilbert White • Edward Thomas • Flora Thompson • William Cobbett • W. H. Hudson These revised literary walks are available online: www.easthants.gov.uk/walking or from the Petersfield Tourist Information Centre: 01730 268829.
