STRANGE THINGS ARE HAPPENING! Throughout the world strange things start to happen at around this time of the year.
For example, some Canadian Geese set off on a journey south of up to 5,000kms while people in London move their clocks backwards and people in Sydney move theirs forward. That journey of 5,000kms is, it appears, massively dwarfed by that of the Artic tern which flies an average distance of 79,000 kms from Greenland, in the northern hemisphere to the Weddell Sea, in Antarctica, in the southern hemisphere, and then back again! It seems they do it to follow the algae blooms in the world’s oceans, and where the blooms thrive most is where the most food is found, mostly fish, but also insects and crustaceans. That’s why they spend a bit of extra time in the north Atlantic hot spot and the polar front in Antarctica. With a diet of fish and plenty of exercise you’d expect they’d live to a hundred, but no, on average they manage about 30 years, by which time they’ve flown an estimated 2.4 million kilometres, the equivalent of three return trips to the moon. All this is mentioned because Migratory Bird Day 2020 was on May 9 and then takes place again on Oct 10, another strange occurrence. But back to geese. Why is it that they fly in that V shaped formation that looks like a Delta Wing aircraft? Well, if you said it’s because it has unique aerodynamic characteristics, you’re right. But that’s only part of the story.
The V shape is just a result. The cause is that geese have learned how to cooperate and act as a team. As each bird flaps its wings it creates an uplift for the birds behind, so they can fly further with less effort, over 70% further in fact. But what about the lead bird? Well when it gets tired it falls back and another goose takes its place, effectively sharing the load. If a bird falls out of formation it feels the drag and resistance of flying alone and quickly gets back into formation. Throughout all this geese at the back “honk” encouragement to those up front and let them know that all is OK at the back.
And beyond that, if a goose gets sick two other geese follow it down to help and provide protection until it recovers and can re-join the flock, or a new one that is passing. Like humans geese have learned that by working together they can share the load and achieve more with less effort. So now, if someone calls you a goose, you can smile and say thank you. So, what about all these clocks falling backwards and leaping forwards? Many say it plays havoc with their sleep patterns and takes their body a week to adjust, so why bother? It was originally suggested in New Zealand in 1895 by etymologist, George Hudson, to give him more afternoon time to hunt bugs, and was first actually implemented in Germany and Austria in war torn Europe in 1916 to save energy and reduce the need for artificial lighting. Saving energy seems like a good idea, and we’re also told it reduces traffic accidents, boosts our vitamin D levels, gives
us more evening time to exercise, helps us lose weight, reduces incidents of depression and decreases robberies. On that basis a week to adjust seems a small price to pay. Finally, a warm welcome back to our old friend the QR Code. Ushered back from retirement to fight COVID-19 it has proved to be a faithful servant and a loyal ally. Invented in 1994, they have recently taken a back seat but are now in the front line helping us “flatten the curve” in restaurants, cafes, pubs, clubs and many other public places. To say welcome back we have added a few to this page to bring to life some of the topics covered. Every business owner has that fear lurking in the back of their minds; what if my business closes down? What if I lose my investment? For many, it might just remain a fear. But for Kristy, this fear became a reality. Jimmy Liks is a family-owned business known for its Southeast Asian dishes. The owners, Kristy and Justin, are childhood sweethearts. They fell in love while they were at school, but after some time, they went their separate ways and had families of their own. But as fate would have it, they met again, and now their families have united.

"We had Mrs Liks. We got all the delivery systems in place, the labelling, the branding, and all of that stuff. We also had social media, the cooking shows, everything that you can say on our Facebook and Instagram page." It wasn't easy at first. But Kristy's grit and love for their products made it easy for her to sell Mrs Liks. For her, it's all about being real and having the confidence in what she's selling.

Kristy believes that nobody can sell a product as the business owner does. "When a customer comes to my store, my most important job is to make them feel like they are heard. And they are the only thing that matters at that moment."
The teamwork that these two shared, along with the help from their families, meant that Jimmy Liks could stay afloat. Kristy became the face of the restaurant while her husband prepared the food. Their restaurant was located in the heart of Kings Cross and was thriving.
Shaped by her past and moulded by the present, Kristy is a true epitome of a mother and an entrepreneur who wants nothing but the best for her family. Amid all the tribulations, together with her husband, they continue to persist. They continue to trust in the process.
However, Kings Cross was also infamous for the party crowd. With ensuing alcoholbased attacks. It has been almost eight years since the 'King Hits Assault' happened metres away from Jimmy Liks restaurant, Where Stuart Kelly was killed following an unprovoked one-punch attack.
With the future in mind, Kristy hopes that the laws and regulations in place would make it easier for food establishments to become profitable; to make businesses, like hers, continue to survive.
It was then the tipping point for the authorities and the community. The lockout laws were imposed, and many family businesses were closed down, including Jimmy Liks. As Kristy recalls, there was 32 business that shut down. She shares how difficult it was to find other means to earn a living and continue to survive. But her drive to provide for her family and entrepreneur fighting spirit, gave her the commitment to provide for her children, to protect their investment, and to keep her family afloat. When the lockout happened, they had to rethink their business model. They had to find other revenue streams.

True enough, through their hard work and innovative reactions to changing times, they started running markets stands. At the pinnacle of their market success, they were doing big gigs like food festivals and the Easter Show.
But as they say, "the life of an entrepreneur is not an easy journey". When asked what keeps her awake at night, Kristy shares that it's the worry of providing for her family, but being the fighter, Kristy has learned to toughen up; to adapt.
"So we needed to market the business, and the markets essentially was the new way for us to make money and to sell our products still. My husband is passionate about food, and that's all he ever wanted to do. So the market seemed like a good place to get to see people again and reach out."
When the Covid-19 pandemic hit Australia, a lot of businesses shut down. But it did not deter Kristy's spirit. It was her belief in the products that they sell, the confidence she has put into her husband's cooking, and the loyalty of their customers that started Mrs Liks. Over time, their followers looked to the 'take-home' option for their food.

THE BUILDERS OF MODERN AUSTRALIA - PART 3 We continue to explore the important contributions of past parishioners of St Mark’s Anglican Church, Darling Point.
THE TOOTH FAMILY
The Tooth family is an example of what can be achieved with a great work ethic and a group of people bound by faith and family cohesion. When John Tooth, a merchant and brewer, arrived in Sydney from Cranbrook, Kent, as a free settler in 1828, he provided an example of what could be accomplished in the new colony. He prospered initially as a merchant and established the Kent Brewery on 4.5 acres along the Parramatta Road, from which the famous ‘KB’ lager derives its name. His success inspired his nephews, Robert, Edwin and later, Frederick, Tooth, to try their luck. Arriving in 1843, Robert and Edwin joined their uncle and leased his brewery. Through hard work they became prosperous and prominent citizens, becoming interested in politics and progressing to Representative Government. Interestingly, it was not beer which established the brother’s fortunes, but trading in spirits and other commodities and acting as commission agents. They were joined by young Frederick in 1853 and R & F Tooth and Co was formed.
Their success led Robert to form the Twofold Bay Pastoral Association. With other prominent St Mark’s parishioners, the partners acquired some 400,000 acres (161,876 ha) on the south coast and Monaro, establishing a pastoral empire which centred on ‘Kameruka’ as the head station. They implemented European pastoral practices and land use which pioneered massive increases in rural productivity.
Robert was a director of the Bank of New South Wales throughout this period (President in 1862-1863) and the brothers were prominent shareholders in the Colonial Sugar Refining Co. with Edward Knox. As leading Anglicans they were very active in benevolent and philanthropic activities and noted for the fair treatment of those for whom they provided employment as well as the tenants of their pastoral properties, which was rare in that day and age. Robert began building his fine residence, ‘Cranbrook’, at Rose Bay in 1859 but sold it to Robert Towns in 1864. It later became Cranbrook School. Edwin also had his own pastoral interests and while emotionally close to his brothers, he lived in Tasmania for some time before eventually returning to England. Edwin’s son, Robert Lucas Tooth (later Sir Robert) was born in Sydney in 1844 and educated at Eton College. In 1863, this RL Tooth returned to Sydney and joined the management of

What he built was "The Porsche" and about "The Porsche" he said - “there is no substitute.” It’s interesting to look at his career in the car world; he was a bit of a genius. He was drawn to technology and the gift of electricity.

There is no set formula used to divide your property. The Courts recognise that each and every family is unique. For this reason, no one can tell you exactly what orders you may receive from a Court hearing. The outcome will depend on your unique circumstances, the evidence provided and the Court’s assessment of what is ‘just and equitable’ for both parties. Deborah Tresise, Baxter Warne Legal
For most of us, established partnerships and marriage mean “for keeps”. This is particularly so when there are children involved. But not all relationships have that “happy ever after” ring. A relationship breakdown will often leave the parties experiencing feelings of remorse, guilt, sadness and grief. And sometimes, a real sense of relief.
WHAT DOES THE LAW SAY?
Whatever the reasons for the breakdown of your relationship, it is important to understand that the Australian Family Law jurisdiction is a “no fault” jurisdiction. This means, issues such
as “Who caused the breakdown of the relationship?” are simply not relevant. It is not appropriate for a party to blame the other party for whatever occurred for them to be in this situation. Playing the blame game is not healthy for the children and extended family members. It can also be unnecessarily expensive. Separation and divorce where there are young children of the marriage is primarily about the children. The Court will need to be satisfied that the proposed parenting arrangements are in each of the children’s best interests. Putting yourself in their shoes may help resolve conflict relating to nights spent with each parent, sporting and other extracurricular activities and the like.
The general principles however, regardless of whether the parties were in a marriage or a de facto relationship, involve consideration of the following: • Each of the party’s current assets and debts. • Direct financial contributions during the relationship by way of earnings. • Non-direct financial contributions – gifts and inheritances. • Non-financial contributions such as caring for children and homemaking. • Financial contributions brought by each party to the relationship. • Future needs of each party – age, health, financial resources, care of children and ability to earn. Applications for property settlements must be made within 12 months of your divorce becoming final or if you were in a de facto relationship, within two years of the breakdown of your de facto relationship. Otherwise you will need special permission of a court. This is not always granted.

COVID AXE FALLS ON BONDI JUNCTION OFFICE SPACE Waverley Council says it is currently difficult to gauge the long-term impact of COVID on the Bondi Junction commercial property market.
The Council has long-cherished the vision of Bondi Junction as an office hub and in the past, councillors like former Mayor John Wakefield have cautioned against over-emphasis on residential developments in favour of commercial ones.
A report tabled at an online meeting of the Council’s Strategic Planning and Development Committee said: “The longterm structural impacts of COVID-19 on the office market will not likely be known at least until the pandemic is resolved, or some time after once a transition period is over.”
It has identified four sites are suitable for commercial development: 376-382 Oxford St; 47-53 Spring St; 68 Denison St: and 10 Denison St. But a lot of people say the Junction has lost its character through rampant development. Both the eastern and western ends of Oxford St have been under continuous construction for years with the building of large apartment complexes.
The council document also reasons that although there will be more people working from home, those that do stay in the office will want more personal space. “While there may be greater demand for working from home, this may be offset by preferences for greater separation in office desks and layout. Planning should take a precautionary approach.”
With further developments under way, the concern is that the end result will be a “canyon of towers” along Oxford St.
According to the document, Waverley should continue supporting commercial floor space, and not make any diversion from current policies for “several years.” The report said that “the intention to protect and promote commercial floor space in Bondi Junction will continue and can be reviewed in several years’ time once the pandemic is resolved and impacts are known.”
If COVID-19 does halt the pace of development, it could be a case of every cloud having a silver lining.

WAYS youth, family and Russell King Waverley Action for Youth Services (WAYS) was established in 1979 by a Waverley Council youth worker, along with a group of concerned citizens whose aim was to ensure that local young people were inspired to become healthy, positive and constructive members of society. In 1992 thanks to Russell King and the funds provided by the NSW Government, Waverley Council and funds raised from the community by Bondi Lions and Rotary, WAYS moved to a purpose built two-storey facility at Bondi Beach. This building, now The Russell King building, stands as a permanent legacy to Russell. This building is the head office of the organisation and the site for our after school care, drop in, counselling service and our secondary school. Our other programs such as The Wellness Centre and WAYS Youth Training are based at our Bondi Junction office, located above the Bus Rail Interchange. With support from the community, government funding, donations from organisations such as, The Chapell Foundation and the Matana Foundation, WAYS is able to provide a wide range of the following specialized programs, activities and services to young people and their families across eastern Sydney.
1. WAYS YOUTH SPACE An after school care for primary aged students aged years 3 - 6 and a drop in providing teenagers with a safe recreational space. 2. WAYS YOUTH TRAINING: DELIVERING ASQA Accredited training
programs to young people and assisting young people aged 15 - 25 with preparation for workforce a Employment Placement and Mentoring is a requirement of our NSW State Training Smart and Skilled contract funding.
3. THE WELLNESS CENTRE Provides free services for young people and their families from allied health professionals such as psychologists, case managers, dentists and acupuncturist. We also have youth and family bulk billing G.P. 4. WAYS SECONDARY A NESA accred-
ited alternative high school for years 9–12. The school specialises in meaningfully engaging students who do not wish to attend a mainstream school for any reason. Russell King was the CEO for 31 years from September 1989 to October 2019. Russell ensured that WAYS catered to the needs of the local community, especially young people who were in need of assistance for a range of issues, be they psychological, physical, educational or social. To this end, 18 years ago Russell established WAYS Youth Training to provide qualifications for young people who were not engaged in the school
system. Russell also facilitated the creation of our Youth Space, a drop in centre and now an after school care to ensure local young people have a safe and vibrant space to call their own. Russell also innovated the secondary education space by creating WAYS Secondary. Russell was dedicated, compassionate and inspiring in his approach to serving our community. As CEO, Russell provided strong leadership for staff. His vision and its successful implementation ensured that WAYS enjoys its incredibly well received reputation as the market leader in the provision of a range of innovative, professional and in demand youth and family services.
October 19, 2020 marks one year since the untimely passing of Russell King. Russell will be forever missed by the local community and WAYS staff past and present. WAYS Youth & Family are inspired to honour and preserve the indelible legacy of a much loved and respected leader: our Russell King.

In this Ed 22, I walk from Bronte Gully to the headland, sharing the fascinating history of the area. If you are walking in a group, social distance 1.5m and wear a mask if you can't.
Bronte Beach was named after the military figure Vice-Admiral Horatio Nelson, Duke of Bronté. Nelson was awarded the title of Duke of Bronte from the King of Naples in 1799 and from that time signed his name as "Nelson and Bronte". Originally Bronte Beach was known as Nelson Bay and continues as the name of the bay fronting the beach. In 1957 the name Bronte for the suburb was first used in advertisements for the sale of land called the Bronte Estate.

I begin my walk at Bronte House, built in 1836 by William Mortimer Lewis, a Colonial Architect. He began building the house but when an economic depression hit in 1843, was forced to sell the property before its completion.

The house changed hands quickly over the next couple of years, until the Ebsworth family bought the property in 1882 and occupied it for over three generations. In 1948 the Ebsworths sold the house and its ground to Waverley Council. The house is open to the public only a few times a year.

You will notice caves at side of beach, just next to the Surf club where aborigines probably lived. At the southern end of the beach is a large 'bogey hole', the name derived from an Aboriginal word for swimming or bathing place. In 1887 it was enlarged and a sea wall built to form the Bronte Baths. It is believed that the Australian crawl was first seen at the baths in 1899. I head up the coastal walk towards Waverley Cemetery, passing a sculpture by by Oushi Zokei 2012 "Twice Twisted Bands", which was featured in Sculpture by the Sea.
It is also home to Bronte Surf Lifesaving Club which is the oldest such organisation in the world, formed in 1903. The idea of having able swimmers patrol the beach thereby making swimming safer was developed by John Bond.

Behind Bronte Beach is Bronte Park featuring sheltered picnic huts, cafe, and the Bronte Beach miniature train which has been owned and operated by Coleman & Son since 1947. There is a very dangerous rip Bronte Beach known as the Bronte Express. The beach is patrolled by Waverley Council full-time lifeguards on a daily basis (except during winter) and volunteer lifesavers from the life saving club on weekends and public holidays.

The line opened to Waverley in 1890, then to Bronte in 1911. Electric services started to Waverley in 1902, then Bronte in 1911. The line was closed in 1960.

NOISE COMPLAINTS UNDER INVESTIGATION Residents in Matraville, Little Bay and other suburbs near Port Botany have been complaining about an intrusive noise.
They describe the sound as a droning, lowpitched hum that makes it impossible to get a good night’s sleep. Here are some of the comments that residents have posted on Facebook: • Vicki James: "I have lived in Matraville for 40 years and have never experienced anything like this noise.” • Peter Finlan: “In Little Bay last night was horrendous. Low frequency felt like my head was going to explode.” • Chantelle Darcy: “It sounded like a pool filter or air con exhaust unit was running outside my window. It was very difficult to drown it out and fall asleep.” Carlos Da Rocha, independent councillor for Randwick’s South Ward, took up the residents’ cause and raised it at a full meeting of Council. He moved that Council organise a meeting with NSW Ports, the Environment Protection Authority (EPA), the NSW Environment Minister other stakeholders. In addition, Councillor Da Rocha called for noise monitoring and the construction of mitigation devices such as sound walls. “As a vocal advocate for mental health, it concerns me that operations of the port are having
a detrimental effect on the wellbeing of our residents,” he told the meeting. Councillors unanimously agreed to Councillor Da Rocha’s motion. The following day, the Mayor, Danny Said contacted NSW Ports about the problem.
NSW Ports responded quickly and appointed a firm of acoustic consultants to monitor noise from four homes in Matraville, Little Bay and Botany. The next step was a teleconference which had some heavyweight participants in the form of NSW Environment Minister Matt Kean, NSW Ports CEO Marika Calfas and the EPA’s CEO Tracy Mackey. Representing residents was Mayor Said, Councillor Da Rocha and his fellow South ward independent Noel D’Souza, Bayside Mayor Clarke Martin and two other Bayside councillors. It was agreed that a report would be prepared matching the noise monitoring data against ship movements. Mayor Said told Eastern Suburbs Life that he was encouraged by the response from NSW Ports. “They’ve been pretty good about it. It’s encouraging that they are trying to work out if there’s a pattern to the noise. Everyone agrees that it’s like a diesel engine, as though an idling truck is parked outside your place.”
He urged residents with noise complaints to email him at: mayor@randwick.nsw.gov.au and/or the EPA at: info@environment.nsw.gov.au A spokesperson for NSW Ports said: “We take all noise complaints very seriously and we have had a permanent noise monitoring system installed at Port Botany since 2017 with sensors placed around the port.” According to the spokesperson, there have been no recent operational changes at the
port. “We are aware of the recent increase in noise complaints and are working collaboratively to understand this issue and identify the noise source, including whether it is port related.” Residents are invited to report noise concerns directly to NSW Ports. Labor MPs Marjorie O’Neill and Michael Daley presented a 10,000 signature petition to the NSW Parliament as part of their campaign to stop the axe falling on further bus services.

MPs continue to fight closure of bus services
On October 25, the M50 and M10 Metrobus services will make their final journeys. Mr Daley, who brought the M10 to Maroubra Junction in the former Labor Government, says these were “much-loved services” and that a lot of long-term bus passengers will feel marooned. “They’ll be forced onto the too-slow light rail,” he said. The M10 runs between to Maroubra Junction and Leichhardt via the City, while the M50 goes from Coogee to Drummoyne via the city. A lot of bus passengers will now have to use truncated routes which connect them to the light rail terminus at Kingsford or Randwick. Someone living in Maroubra, for instance, would have no way of getting into the heart of the city except by light rail. Mr Daley points out that the original Environmental Impact Statement for the light rail said there would be impacts, but did not talk about cancellation or loss of routes at such scale. “This is unacceptable and our community will fight to save our buses every step of the way,” he said. Marjorie O’Neill also sounded a combative note as she said: “We will continue to fight to save our wonderful buses.” The Coogee MP has been at the forefront of a Save Our Buses campaign ever since she was elected in March 2019. She says the state government is proposing to cut 16 local bus routes from the area, “the equivalent of removing 1600 buses from the network each weekday.” Under the NSW Government plan: the 302, 314, 317, 373, 376, 377, 393, 394, 395, 397, 399, L94, 891, 893 services will be completely cancelled; and as stated above, it’s already RIP M50 and M10. The theme of forced light rail use has also taken up by Save the Bay campaigner and community leader Maria Poulos Conkin, who says it should be looked at by Disability and Age Discrimination Commissioners. Here’s what Maria posted onFacebook: “Has anyone tried walking from the bus stop to the light rail stop at Souths Juniors, Kingsford, Kensington or Moore Park? Crossing light rail tracks, 10 minute walk, long crossings – it is a nightmare.” TONY MAGUIRE

GO HARD & FAST: Lessons from Taiwan By September 22 and with a population of 23.8m Taiwan had recorded only 509 COVID-19 cases and seven deaths. By that date, Australia had 26,972 cases and 859 deaths in a population of 25.6m – only slightly larger than Taiwan.
Adding to Taiwan’s impressive results, its population density is much higher than Australia’s, as our nation is about 215 times bigger than Taiwan (Australia is approximately 7.74 million sq km while Taiwan is approximately 35,980 sq km). In addition, being only around 130km from mainland China, Taiwan’s close geographic and economic ties with China made it seem particularly vulnerable; however, the island state succeeded in averting a coronavirus health crisis.

At the start of the outbreak Taiwan’s President, Tsai Ing-wen, had just won a landslide victory for her second term on January 11. Vice President Chen Chien-jen is a Johns Hopkins-trained epidemiologist and an expert in viruses, while Health Minister and Commander of the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC), Chen Shih-chung, coordinated the response and gave daily press briefings. In addition, the government’s digital minister, Audrey Tang, has expert IT knowledge and played a significant role in actively supporting online initiatives.

On December 31, when Chinese officials notified the WHO of several cases of pneumonia, the Taiwan Centers for Disease Control sent officials to board flights from Wuhan as soon as they landed, monitoring passengers for symptoms. Less than a week later, the government began monitoring people who had travelled from Wuhan since December 20. Anyone displaying symptoms was quarantined at home and assessed for hospitalisation.
As a result, Taiwan revamped its health infrastructure and invested in biomedical research and big data facilities. In addition, temperature monitors were placed in airports to screen travellers for fever.
The CECC set up a response team on January 2 and health authorities started COVID-19 testing and introduced physical distancing. Taiwan’s first COVID-19 case was confirmed on January 21 and on January 26, Taiwan became the first country to ban flights from Wuhan.
Taipei’s swift, early activation of medical personnel and testing plus affordable public healthcare kept its population safe. Unlike other countries, the government didn’t introduce mass testing and didn’t shut down schools, companies or businesses. During 2002/03, the SARS pandemic killed 73 people in Taiwan and impeded its economy.
Extensive knowledge was also acquired on how to treat pandemic patients, and the public was willing to follow government instructions.

By late January, Taipei had established a Central Epidemic Command Centre, centralising measures to protect public health. On January 24, after demand for surgical masks had spiked, the government banned exports of surgical face masks and introduced a rationing system on January 28.
Collaboration between the public, private and civic sectors then occurred spontaneously. Over 1,000 software developers provided apps and other tools to the public to identify in real time where face masks were available, which eased public anxiety and prevented a black market. By late February, Taipei had distributed nearly 6.5 million masks to primary and secondary schools, as well as after-school institutions, plus 84,000 litres of hand sanitiser and 25,000 forehead thermometers. On February 27, the alert was raised to the highest level one. Taiwan imposed 14-day home isolation on all international arrivals on March 14, which was diligently enforced by local authorities. Travellers to high-risk areas were quarantined at home and monitored via their phones to ensure they stayed there. Importantly, Taiwan’s health-insurance system covers 99% of the population, so there’s free testing and, if isolation is required, food, accommodation and medical care is covered during the 14 days.
Since March 19, foreign nationals were barred from Taiwan. On April 1, masks became mandatory. Rationing continued until late April when the government was able to produce ample numbers domestically – daily mask production reached 17 million. Public and private buildings screen entrants for signs of fever, and apartment buildings placed hand sanitiser inside or outside elevators.
WINNING FORMULA
The main contributors to Taiwan’s winning formula were: an immediate response; fast medical equipment build-up; prompt prevention, tracking and treatment; early social distancing measures; a central command structure; coordination of government and private sectors; transparency and open information sharing (volunteers were enlisted to collect additional data, from pharmacies for example); and extensive use of big data analysis. COVID-safe guidelines for beaches

Innovative grant ideas awarded
Provision of free transport to and from critical medical appointments for vulnerable individuals and an innovative online art program enabling participants to explore their creative expression from the comfort of their homes are among the recipients of more than $120,000 in grants awarded to local community groups and charities as part of Woollahra Council’s Grants Program. Grants are awarded across three categories: Community and Cultural Grants providing funding of up to $7,500, Placemaking Grants of up to $7,500 and Environmental Grants of up to $2,000. Pop-up cycleway to link Rose Bay and Bondi
In what appears to be a major concession, she said social distancing of 1.5 metres is “health advice only” and instead there will be a rule of one person per four square metres. Beachgoers will be allowed to congregate in groups of up to 20. Councillor Masselos said additional rangers and lifeguards will be employed to monitor numbers of beachgoers. She said: “If our beaches or parks look busy, please come back another time or use that time to visit our local businesses who need your support.” Meanwhile, the council is looking at a possible solution to overcrowding on the Bondi to Bronte Coastal Walk by introducing a one-way system. Councillor Masselos suggested it could be “one-way south on the actual walkway and a safe northern passage along our streets.” She acknowledged “how wonderful the Waverley community has been throughout this pandemic. Our residents want only the best for the community and are doing their best to help keep themselves and each other safe.”

Pick-up drop-off zones
Waverley Council and Transport for NSW are making it easier for people to travel safely around the area with newly-installed pick-up drop-off (PUDO) bays.

The project will connect the public transport hub at Rose Bay Ferry Wharf with Bondi Beach. The temporary route will help to support safe travel during COVID-19 by freeing up capacity on public transport, making it safer and easier for people to ride to work or school and will also provide a safer route for exercise. Installation works, involving a design that will not require removal of parking to operate, will commence in the coming months.
The PUDO zones enable drivers to collect and deposit passengers in busy areas without causing any traffic disruptions, or coming under the beady eye of a parking warden. Two council-endorsed endorsed apps – Moovit and Wave – can be used to connect you to the bay locations. The bays are in Bondi Junction and Bondi. In the Junction there is Grafton St and Adelaide St west. A bay will be installed on Bronte Rd between Ebley St and Spring St following completion of the Bondi Junction Cycleway. In Bondi there are bays in Glenayr Avenue south, Curlewis St north, Roscoe St north, Campbell Pde west and Hall St north.

The redrafted application keeps the number of seats at 1815 while creating two new cinemas. Budget for the project is almost $1.4 million. Meanwhile, the Ritz’s new outdoor cinema in the laneway at the rear of the heritagelisted building, approved by Council last year through a separate application, has just started operating. It can accommodate an audience of 60, but currently there are 20 seats to comply with COVID social distancing requirements.

A meeting of Randwick Local Planning Panel gave the green light to a modified application after rejecting an earlier one in June because it would have had adverse visual impacts on neighbouring properties. In addition, the original proposal involved an increase in seats from 1815 to 1932, which the Council ruled could lead to unsustainable parking demand at The Spot.

BUS ROUTE CUTS
We are aware that the NSW Government is beginning to cut bus services and remove bus stops as a result of the completion of the light rail and the impending privatisation of our buses. I am calling on the NSW Government to immediately begin community consultation.
Greens Councillor Philipa Veitch has been re-elected Deputy Mayor of Randwick. Two popular councillors of other political persuasions – Liberal Harry Stavrinos and independent Carlos Da Rocha – put their hands up for the job. But Councillor Veitch secured the position with a majority vote from the five Labor and three Greens Councillors.
The deputy mayor election was held at the Prince Henry Centre in Little Bay on September 22 and went ahead while the scheduled September community vote for election of councillors was put on hold for 12 months because of COVID. The same week, Waverley’s deputy mayor Elaine Keenan, another Green, was re-elected. Bayside has re-elected independent James Macdonald as deputy.
Join the council Facebook business group Promote your services and network through a new Facebook group started by Randwick City Council. It’s open to businesses, groups and individuals. The council says the aim of the group is “to bring businesses and residents of Randwick City together.” The group is called Shop Local: Connecting Customers and Business in Randwick City. It has been enthusiastically embraced by the community and the page has postings for a wide range of goods and services.
