It’s a source we will increasingly use to provide content for future editions of Eastern Suburbs Life (several such articles already appear in this edition).

PKP Kinesiology has a large data base of treatment techniques and incorporates the clients emotion into the process to give lasting results. He also obtained a remedial and sports massage diploma and further studied myofascial release and dry needling.
David also treats children using Kinesiology and says, “Kids really respond well as their minds are willing to absorb new things and they often have less stress than adults. It improves their ability to learn, focus and concentrate and can even reduce dyslexic tendencies. ‛corner store� Serving over 3000 coffees a week, and selling fresh vegetables, milk and bread, as well as newspapers and an extensive inventory of groceries, the Watsons Bay Milk Bar is the keystone of the local area. “it's a real general store, a microsupermarket,” describes Proprietor, Con Georgiou. In the heart of Watsons Bay village, this store is where locals regularly meet and greet as well as come to relax and enjoy the sun at comfortable outside tables. “We’ve got very good local support, from all over – Vaucluse, Camp Cove, the bay – it’s very much a community place,” Con says. “Mornings are very, very busy. From 6am, people going to work come in and grab their coffee and everything else they need to start their day.” Now, because of the demand, the Milk Bar also offers hot chips: “Everyone was asking so we thought we’d put them on the menu!” Con explained. This local support runs both ways with the business supporting many local events as well as charitable causes in the schools. Open 6am-6pm, seven days a week, the store’s convenient location also attracts myriad tourists from the ferry and nearby bus stop. “Watsons Bay is becoming a more popular destination now, even in winter - there’s more ferries and more services.” explains Con.
A great example of the growing trend of resurrecting the local corner store/milk bar, this Watsons Bay business was taken over by Con around seven years ago who restored its charm and place in the community. “We restored what we could. The tiles are original and the Milk Bar sign is based on the old one.” Though the interesting carved wooden doors from Argentina are close to 200 years old, most of the items reference the store's original '50s style. “I wanted to retain the original features of the shop. I didn’t want to modernise it.” Having previously been owned by the same family - who built the building in 1958, the store now also features ’50s memorabilia collected by Con. The retro-style is matched by good, oldfashioned service: “It’s about delivering the courtesy of the past, like the shops I remember growing up, that you don’t often receive nowadays at 7/11 convenience stores.” Symbolising this is Con's classic '60s mini van, often parked outside the shop, which is also a drawcard for Insta photo seekers.

What’s the biggest challenge at The Field? Our best and asset is being set back from the road and a little escape from the busy roads of Sydney however this also means we are sometimes a little hard to find and have minimal walk past traffic. How did The Field come about? I knew the space and given that the majority of Sydney families aren’t lucky enough to have a backyard we wanted to create a casual home away from home where the kids could run around, even without my offering this is a wonderful part of Sydney for every age group to enjoy. What is your favorite time of the year down here? Spring is absolutely beautiful down here especially the mornings with the sun rising over the beautiful Andrew Petrie Oval. What is on the horizon? Our weekend breakfast menu is nearly finalised and our newly refurbished function room upstairs is just about at capacity with end of year functions booking in. What makes this such a popular venue amongst Eastern Suburbs Families? I think it’s the small things that count. The free and easy parking, the child friendly bistro menu, the games and of course the lush field itself for the kids to run around on. Have you got a favorite menu item? The Beastie Beef is my naughty go to and the Torched Salmon Poke bowl is sensational for something a little lighter. We are lucky enough to be welcoming back our original Head Chef Madita Kosch who has created amazingly fresh function menus.

Loving liqueurs
Liqueurs are widely acknowledged to have been produced by monks, during the 13th century. Derived from the Latin ‘liquifacere’, which means to liquify, liqueurs have evolved, over the centuries, to become very popular alcoholic beverages, today. Liqueurs can be flavoured with fruits, herbs and spices etc. They are usually quite sweet and regularly have a lower alcohol content than spirits, although some liqueurs can have an ABV which is high. Liqueurs are great by themselves, over ice and/or used in cocktails-with fabulous results! They can be flavoured in various ways, such as by macerating or infusing the ingredient in liquid, usually the base spirit. Concentrated fruits or flavourings, or essential oils, can also be added to the base spirit, which might be distilled from grape, grain or molasses. Many liqueurs are particular to a small geographical area and most have a story about their origins. Liqueurs also vary in quality. Some, such as Chartreuse, have a noble history, and the best are made artisanally; others are inexpensive alcoholbased confections. Here are most common liqueurs you’re likely to come across.
AMARETTO
Amaretto, meaning “a little bitter” in Italian, is a popular almond-flavoured liqueur that’s typically made from apricot pits, but it can also include additional spices and flavours depending on the brand.
Authentic Italian Tiramisu TOTAL TIME: 8 HOURS, 30 MINUTES SERVES 8 INGREDIENTS
6 egg yolks, at room temperature 4 egg whites 1/2 cup granulated sugar 2 cups mascarpone 36-48 Savoiardi ladyfingers 1 1/2 cups Italian coffee made in Moka pot, cooled 2 tablespoons Marsala 1/4 cup cocoa powder 1/4 cup dark or semi-sweet chocolate, shaved
DIRECTIONS
1. Brew coffee and allow to cool to room temperature. 2. In a large bowl, whisk egg yolks and 1/4 cup of sugar until pale, doubled in volume, and "ribbons" remain for a few seconds when spoon is lifted from the mixture, about 3-4 minutes. 3. Whisk in marscarpone a little bit at a time. 4. In another large bowl, beat egg whites and remaining 1/4 cup sugar until stiff, glossy peaks form. 5. Fold egg whites into mascarpone mixture. 6. Add 2 tablespoons Marsala to the coffee.
7. Dip Savoiardi ladyfingers quickly into the coffee and arrange in a layer in the bottom of a 33 x 23 x 5 cm pan. Do not "soak" the ladyfingers in the coffee or your Tiramisu will turn out soggy. 8. Spread half of the mascarpone mixture on top of the ladyfingers. 9. Top with another layer of dipped ladyfingers. 10. Spread remaining mascarpone mixture evenly on top of ladyfingers. 11. Refrigerate at least 8 hours before serving (overnight works well too). This allows the filling to set and the ladyfingers to soften and absorb the coffee. 12. Sprinkle with cocoa powder and chocolate shavings immediately before serving.

Baileys was the first Irish cream to appear, gracing the world of liqueurs in 1973. While the exact recipe is a well kept secret, we do know that Baileys opts for cocoa extract, sugar and herbs as the main other ingredients alongside the whiskey and cream.
CAMPARI
This dark red liqueur is made from a combination of herbs and fruit, and is often served on the rocks or in popular cocktails, such as the Negroni.
COINTREAU
An orange-flavoured liqueur that’s a big player in many cocktail recipes, it is the perfect combination of bitter and sweet and used in classics like the "Cosmopolitan".
FRANGELICO
This delicate liqueur is made from toasted hazelnuts and has hints of cocoa and vanilla. Similar to many sweet liqueurs, it can be mixed in a variety of cocktails or simply enjoyed on the rocks.
KAHLÚA
Number one selling coffee liqueur in the world. The most popular cocktail requests using the coffee liqueur are White and Black Russians.
ST-GERMAIN
Flavoured with elderflowers and carrying hints of sweet and floral notes, St-Germain has a subtle taste but can hold its own among other spirits, such as gin, Champagne, vodka and rum.
SAMBUCA
Sambuca is a strong, colourless Italian liqueur that’s flavoured with anise and licorice.
Tiramisu is easily the most exported Italian dessert. Many don’t know that it was first devised in Treviso, at the restaurant Le Becchiere. A recent dispute between Veneto and Friuli Venezia Giulia has put a question mark on its actual authorship, stating that there are actually four original versions: two Venetian (from the Treviso area), and two from the neighbouring region, and that all are legitimate.

TOP KNOT Eoin Daniels
Fifteen years ago, a 21-year-old carpenter from Waterford, Ireland, arrived in Australia. Eoin Daniels didn’t have much in the way of money or possessions, but what he did have was superior carpentry skills, combined with a love and passion for his craft. He also had a bold vision for the future. “I saw how Australia was a much bigger place where someone with a strong work ethic and a passion for what they do could get ahead,” he says. He threw himself into working for a small Sydney construction company, headed by two Irishmen, rising through the ranks to site manager within 18 months. Then in 2006, after securing his permanent residency, he branched out on his own, the name of his company – Top Knot Carpentry & Joinery – attesting to the upward trajectory he planned to take. He took on an apprentice and started with modest domestic and commercial jobs like home renovations and shop fitouts. Then some bigger jobs, like construction of the outdoor bar at the Golden Sheaf hotel in Double Bay, started coming in. “At that stage I was thinking it would grow into a company that employed perhaps a dozen people,” he says.

Doorknocking and handshaking, Eoin slowly but steadily grew his client base. Today Top Knot is a multi-million dollar behemoth of the Australian construction industry, employing 680 staff, almost three quarters of whom hail from the Emerald Isle. Here’s what Eoin has to say about the Irish work ethic: “We don’t drag our heels. We go in and get it done, and the work is top quality.” But you need more than an Irish accent to get a job at Top Knot – and keep it. “We have a very rigorous screening process,” he says. “And if we hire people and they’re not up to scratch, they don’t last.”

The company is ever-growing, constantly on the hunt for more staff. Meanwhile, Eoin is putting resources back into the community that has been so kind to him. Top Knot is supplying its services free in the construction of a house for traumatised youth in Toongabbie. In another pro bono project, it is carrying out an $18,000 fitout at The Settlement Neighbourhood Centre in Redfern. “Australia has been good to me, and it’s great to be able to give something back,” says Eoin.

The whimsical world of GERTRUDE Marie Widolf
In 2017, "Gertrude" was featured in ArtSHINE Gallery's group exhibition "Eclectic". ArtSHINE then represented Marie at the 2018 Surtex Trade & Licensing show in New York, showing her portfolio of mock-up kitchen products and gym merchandise featuring "Gertrude" artworks.
"Gertrude" invites you into her world of mayhem and chaos! Her adventures take her through her kitchen, where plucked and oven-ready roast chickens roam, cooking ingredients escape from her mixing-bowl, and fried eggs rain!
In February 2019, as a member of Randwick's Next Chapter Art Group (NCAG), Marie gave a presentation called "Gertrude in the Age of Social Media", which explained the development of "Gertrude" and changes to her art practice in the digital age.
In 2015, Sydney based, illustrator, Marie Widolf, created her cartoon character, based on her alter-ego, named "Gertrude", about a gal who cannot cook, yet daydreams that she can.
Marie's second solo exhibition titled "Gertrude’s Kitchen", at the Art Space POW in May 2019, was part of the POW Hospital Foundation Program in Randwick, Marie donated a percentage of her sales to the program.
Marie's illustrations and paintings tell stories of relationships between animals and humans, and works in ink and acrylics.
Marie regularly exhibits with Randwick Art Society, and has been a finalist in the Waverley Art Prize. Her children's themed paintings have sold locally and internationally.
Majoring in illustration at Newcastle University, Marie obtained a BA Visual Arts Degree and a Diploma in Education, and then taught at secondary level and in the disability field. Her first children’s picturebook "Hugo and the Camels" was published by Lothian in 1990.

Woollahra Philharmonic Orchestra WPO mission is to bring musical enrichment to the community, providing a professional attitude towards innovative and enjoyable concerts
WPO is the premier community orchestra in Sydney's eastern suburbs and was established in 1996 by local amateur musicians after receiving backing from Woollahra Municipal Council. With the continued support of the Woollahra Municipal Council, the orchestra has steadily grown in stature and now makes an important contribution to the cultural life of the Woollahra municipality and the wider eastern suburbs of Sydney. Comprising of up to 50 regular members who come from all walks of life, all ages, and includes amateurs, students and professionals. Although it's a diverse group they all share a common goal of playing fine symphonic music in a friendly and encouraging environment. The orchestra performs four public concerts per year with a rehearsal period of around 8-10 weeks for each concert. The orchestra's founding conductor and musical director for many years was Mathias Rogala-Koczorowski, a French horn player and brass teacher based at the Mitchell Conservatorium of Music in Bathurst. Following Mathias’ retirement in 2011, Dr Anthony Clarke was appointed as the WPO’s musical director and under his guidance the orchestra continued to expand its repertoire and outreach. As of 2016, the
orchestra engaged several eminent guest Conductors, including Brian Buggy, OAM, Joanna Drimatis and Lee Bracegirdle, who was appointed Chief Conductor in 2018. The WPO performs each program twice, and reaches a wider demographic within the Woollahra community and beyond. The WPO also performs benefit concerts and chamber music programs, reaching outstanding levels of musical excellence, both in performance and programming. The orchestra aims at striking a balance between serious music-making on the one hand, and creating an atmosphere where members can enjoy themselves on the other. In 2014, The WPO received the Highly Commended for Most Innovative Cultural/ Arts Initiative award for our outstanding
contribution to our community from Woollahra Council. This was a significant mile stone in the WPO’s history and it is one we continue to share with families and friends who support them, encourage and motivate them to strive for higher and higher standards.

Patrons include one of Australia's most wellregarded composers, Elena Katz-Chernin, and the distinguished pianist Rachel Valler OAM. Ms Kats-Chernin is a local resident and has been a great supporter of the orchestra.

Strengthening fire safety in apartments After three years of research into fire safety in residential buildings up to 25m high, Fire & Rescue NSW (FRNSW) recently released two reports. The core of the findings demonstrate that sprinklers combined with smoke alarms are more effective at saving lives than using smoke alarms in isolation. “Smoke alarms have had a significant impact on reducing the number of fatalities over the past 10 years; however, a combination of fire sprinklers and smoke alarms can significantly further reduce the risk of fatalities in the event of a fire,” said FRNSW Commissioner Paul Baxter. “Modern-day furnishings and building materials often produce faster fires with higher levels of heat and toxic smoke. We are committed to keeping the people of NSW fire safe and will continue to carry out research that better informs building
code legislation and product standards to improve fire safety.” Following the recommendations outlined in the reports, the FRNSW will be working closely with relevant stakeholders over the coming months. Together with the Fire Protection Association Australia and the Australasian Fire Authorities Council, the FRNSW has submitted a Proposal for Change to the 2019 National Construction Code to mandate sprinklers in all new apartments up to 25m high. While sprinklers will be a welcome addition to fire safety, interconnected smoke alarms positioned throughout apartments are also essential. According to the law that came into effect on May 1, 2006, smoke alarms must meet the requirements of the Australian Standard AS 3786. The alarms must be placed in hallways near bedrooms and there must be an alarm on all levels of the home.
The Commissioner recommends taking the minimum requirements even further with one alarm in each bedroom and in the living area.
Additionally, the interconnection of multiple alarms ensures that if one alarm detects smoke, all other alarms will activate to sound a warning,” he said.
“On average, there are approximately 21 deaths reported each year as a direct result of residential fires across NSW,” he said. “Up to a half of those fatalities could have been prevented if these homes had working smoke alarms as well as a home fire escape plan.
Netstrata recommend installing additional smoke alarms if you don’t currently meet this recommendation. They also recommend regular servicing and testing of smoke alarms to ensure they’re fully operational should their use be required.

Possibly the most iconic, recognisable classic car ever is – the E-Type Jaguar – whether it be a series 1, 2, 3 or whatever, as long as it looks like this, we know what it is – it’s an E-Type, and it is beautiful. Enzo Ferrari said the E-Type is the most beautiful car ever made. This one is a 1972 E-Type, it came along to join the ranks of the other most beautiful cars that came before it. Like lots of E-Types it has a low mileage – born in 1972 and still has only done 30,630 km. For a few moments in my youth, I drove one and it is a very precious memory. It goes vey fast I found out immediately. When this one comes into the workshop, it is an irresistible show stopper. Other clients are always side-tracked on their way to the office whether the E-Type is on the ground or on a hoist. They all gaze at its long nose, shiny duco or wire wheels and they smile, it is impossible not to do so. It really is beautiful…as the famous man said. In March 2008, it was first in the Daily Telegraph’s online list of the worlds’ 100 most beautiful cars. The E-Type was in 'Mad Men', the 'Austin Powers Movie' and Jay Leno has a perfect specimen in his garage. The Museum of Modern Art added one to it's permanent design collection. The E-Type had a racing design principle. It came from a long line of racing cars and is built from that history. It has a subframe carrying the engine, front suspension and front
bodywork bolted directly to the body, lightening the car to 1,380Kg kerb weight. The D-Type was winning annually at Le Mans, 3 years in a row and the winning design was carried over to this E-Type. It’s V12 engine was designed for the 24 hour "Le Mans" race. It had a new 5.3 1- cylinder engine, improved brakes, and the same power steering as the D-Type racer. In 1922 the Swallow Sidecar Company began to produce vehicles and they carried the “SS” badge on the hood. In 1935 “Jaguar” was added to the name. During the war the “SS” was removed for political reasons, and the company became Jaguar Cars. After a search the logo we all associate with Jaguar was introduced. The idea was that the sleek and sinuous Jaguar symbolized the core values of the company – grace, elegance, performance, power and ambition to move forward. The leaping Jaguar embodied all those things. The law was changed after some years and the emblem was deemed a hazardous emblem according to new safety regulations. The jumping Jaguar had to leave the hood and go to the rear. We have all seen the second one, the Jaguar face on silver or red on the radiator grill. Whilst we all know we have seen the face, we still recognise, love and are drawn to the exciting leaping Jaguar. It is one of the most recognisable emblems in the world. It defines the company’s refinement and style. The E-Type Jaguar is still for lots of us “An Object of Desire.” And here’s is some wonderful news – Jaguar has taken the early iconic
E-Type and created the Jaguar-Zero. From an 1968 Roadster they have created a zeroemission powertrain; an electric E-Type they launched in 2017 and will be on the market in 2020. They say it’s fast and the battery will go 270 ks. The "Grand Tourer" as the original E-Type was publicised to be, is still at the cutting edge. A "Grand Tourer" is designed for high speed, long-distance driving and performance and profound luxury for the passengers. Interestingly, the E-Type, so the legend says, was born from discussions between William Heynes (later became Sir William), Walter Hassan and Claude Bailey. They were fire wardens together during the war, three key engineers were on the lookout for German bombers. The story goes – they discussed the principles and detail of the most fabulous engine they could think of. What emerged was the twin-cam XK engine whose "output, durability and smoothness became legendary” and arrived in the world of tailfins (as one reports said) like a jet fighter among propeller planes. So, take this engine, you give it to the aircraft engineer and later Automobile Aerodynamist Malcolm Sayer with a brief to build the body – what else could you end up with except – the most beautiful car ever made. It was created by genius and is driven by connoisseurs. We write the Classic Car series because these cars belong to our clients. Cooper Park Garage: An icon
There is a lot of talk all of a sudden about iconic cars, and almost all of us do not have one. however, Cooper Park Garage is an icon of its own. It’s the garage in the park that many people in the area already know. The beautiful building made of solid stone with an iron roof (pictured above), totally iconically Australian. Long before it became a garage it was a dairy, then a garage of the old school where you bought petrol and mechanics worked on your car. Cooper Park Garage is managed by Jeff, Clint and Matt, totalling 60 years of experience between them. Matt has worked in Edgecliff Automotive for most of his career as a motor technician. This year we celebrate his 20th anniversary with the company. Speaking of icon, it would be easy to say that Matt is an icon. He certainly is a legend as he was already working at Edgecliff Automotive when Joshua bought it. That story is coming along soon, watch this space (as they say!) In the winter, months your car can come under alot of stress. Joshua and Jeff suggest you have your car serviced, and make sure you get your battery checked, as they can be less efficient in winter. Also check fluids in your car which include wiper fluid and anti-freeze, brakes, transmission and the rubber on your windscreen wipers, tyres and their pressure. If your car was born before the 1980's remember to warm it up before you drive off. If you have a 4-wheel drive and likely to use it off road for playing, especially make sure your systems are all go!

Welcome to the world of juggling! Working mums are constantly negotiating a whole bunch of balls in the air – the mum ball, the corporate ball, the housewife ball and maybe even the ‘me time’ ball. We are forever fearing failure in each of the facets of our lives, simply because there are not enough hours in the day to perform at 100% capacity in any one area.

When we are focused on work, we stress about not being present for our children. Being mum, we worry that we are falling short in the workplace. Boundary rider, Jack Murray became first registered Opal Miner in 1901 and walked 1100km from Lightning Ridge to White Cliffs with his colleague Charlie Nettleton, to put on sale the first parcel ever of Black Opal. They walked on foot and did not ride because the area was so dry that there was not enough water to keep a horse alive. Such is the allure of Black Opal that people would travel long distances, suffer great discomfort and brave all sorts of hazards to gaze into the beauty of one of the world’s rarest of rare stones.
Retirement is looming, or is already upon you. You start navigating a new financial landscape offering lush pastures in the form of superannuation and the Age Pension. But there are also pitfalls. In this important article, retirement financial planning specialist Brendan Whitehouse sets out a five step retirement action plan. 1. ASSESS YOUR FINANCIAL POSITION
Opal Mining Shack, Lighting Ridge, NSW Although Jack Murray was the first registered opal miner, Charlie Nettleton is generally recognised as the founder of the Black Opal industry. He was shown a handful of these “black stones” by a Mrs Ryan who wondered at the cause of the colour she could see within them. Charlie, who had been a miner, saw the commercial potential and the Black Opal industry was born. By 1910, over a thousand people were on the diggings and the industry was booming. There were circuses and races and by 1914 the first nurse arrived. Followed by the first police in 1916. Roy Hopkins-Deacon (known to all & sundry as Opalroy) is a present-day heir of this opal history, and more than 100 years later happily carries on the opal-mining tradition in Lightning Ridge. He is fascinated & enthralled by "the majestic beauty of what is surely one of Mother Nature's supreme creations" and says "It's extraordinarily difficult to describe opals in words due to opal's virtually infinite patterns and colour play” “But I can show you," he adds and produces photo on top of the page. "This could be a photo of some distant galaxy" he declares; "It is just amazingly beautiful". Unlike diamonds which are volcanic (and can be created artificially) opals are sedimentary gems and take millions of years to form. This makes each one totally unique with it’s own “fingerprint.” In Australia, the process of opalisation has even created opalised dinosaur bones. To prepare for retirement, the first thing to do is to work out how much money you have now, how much you might have in the future and where it will come from. What assets (houses, savings, investments) do you have and how much are they worth? How much super do you have and when can you access it?
2. IDENTIFY SOURCES OF RETIREMENT INCOME
Your retirement income can come from many sources including: income from super; investments outside super; Age Pension; reverse mortgages and home reversion; selling the family home; working part-time. These income sources can be combined so your money lasts longer, and you have a more comfortable retirement. However, it's worth remembering that one income source can have an impact on another. For example, if you decide to sell the family home, your Age Pension may be reduced or cut off.
3. THINK IN THE LONG-TERM
The next step is to think about how your needs might change over time. Think about how you can use your different income sources to fund the different stages of your life. Seek financial advice if you are unsure what to do.
4. CLAIM THE AGE PENSION AND OTHER ENTITLEMENTS Age Pension age has been slowly increasing from 65 to 67 years. You have to pass income and assets tests, and be an Australian resident.
The income test is harder to pass than the assets test. It assesses your gross income from all sources – and your partner’s income will also be included in the assessment. However, there are Centrelink strategies that can be implemented, especially where there are more than a few years difference in age between the two partners. These strategies could mean the difference between obtaining a part or full Age Pension as opposed to receiving nothing and can add up to many tens of thousands of dollars over a few years. It’s always good to seek advice in these circumstances. Even if you don't get the Age Pension, you may be eligible for other benefits, such as travel concessions, cheaper medicines and reduced council and water rates. The Seniors Card will also give you discounts on travel and some retail services.
5. MAKE YOUR MONEY AND OTHER RESOURCES LAST
With many retirees living beyond the age of 90, it's a good idea to invest at least some of your money in assets that will grow over time. Spread your investments. Depending on your circumstances, you may want to seek financial advice.

Today, he would be anxious about the survival of the bees of the world who are now being ravaged by a small mite called “Varroa Destructor” which is wiping out bee communities on all continents except Australia. This is no small matter, because around 65% of agricultural production in Australia depends on bees for pollination. No bees and no pollination means going hungry. Recently, renowned beekeeper and swarm collector, Gavin Smith attended an event at Rose Bay Community Garden and explained, to an enthralled crowd, the many mysteries of bees and also about the Biosecurity Testing Program that is helping to protect Australian bees from the ravages of “Varroa Destructor”. One part of the program, strongly supported by Woollahra Council, sets up ‘Sentinel Hives’ which aim to monitor bees which may enter the

country through Sydney harbour, these bees may carry diseases and need to be monitored to keep them from gaining a stronghold in Australia. The empty hives are checked regularly and “invading bees” are immediately removed and sent for testing. Waverley Council is trialling a public forum where locals can speak on whatever issues they like. You’ve just got to keep it brief – three minutes or less. The forum runs from 6.30-6.45pm before full meetings of council, giving members of the public the opportunity to address Council on matters of public importance not listed on the meeting agenda.
To speak at a public forum, you must register before 3.00 pm on the Monday before the Council meeting. Places are limited to four speakers per public forum, and each address must be no longer than three minutes. Not much time to make a case, but in addition to speaking at the forum, you can still address Council on items on the meeting agenda. Fight for floor space in Bondi Junction
The battle lines are being drawn for a fight for more commercial floor space in Bondi Junction.
Waverley Council is unhappy that the Junction has lost 9,000sqm of existing commercial floor space in Bondi Junction as a result of residential developments since 2014. The trend was highlighted in a report to the council’s Strategic Planning and Development Committee by Patrick Connor, Strategic Planner.

“There is forecast to be a further loss of 19,000sqm of existing commercial floor space with current and recently approved DAs in the pipeline at the time of writing,” Mr Connor’s report said. According to the report, the loss of office space is being caused by re-development of commercial office and retail into residential towers. With the loss of commercial space go jobs, the report warns. “The conversion of commercial office space to build residential towers, could entail the loss of 64,000sqm of floor space (around 2,500 jobs) in the longer term.” The report recommends bringing in new minimum commercial floor space regulations to protect Bondi Junction Strategic Centre, that commercial hub of the Junction bordered on one side by Grafton St, then taking in the Mall, Spring Street and the Westfield complex. “It is important to highlight that the majority of employment floor space capacity within Bondi Junction is within the Westfield site; which has theoretical capacity for an additional 54,000sqm,” the report states. “Therefore, much of the future type of employment floor space development in Bondi Junction depends on the intentions and willingness of Westfield to further expand their centre.”

Randwick Council is floating a plan to bring back commerce to the Kingsford-Kensington business strip, reeling from the impact of the light rail construction.

It has painted a rosy picture of pop-up shops and public performances along the rail corridor, which is due to become operational in March. A business paper tabled at a full council meeting outlined a program of flexible and short-term projects including: Pop-up shops and stalls to supplement the existing retail offer – art, fashion, technology, plants and flowers; live acoustic music in appropriate locations, along with other free attractions and activities such as outdoor exercise classes. Areas to be targeted in a 10 week activation program include: Kingsford’s Meeks Street Plaza and Southern Cross Close public spaces; newly created wider sections of footpath on the Harbourne Road/ Rainbow Street corner; the section of Anzac Parade between Southern Cross Close and Gardeners Road; and the footpaths areas around the Anzac Parade/Strachan Street and Anzac Parade/Middle Street corners. It is proposed that the trial program could be started in October/November once the footpaths are completed in and around the proposed Kingsford activation sites and the Meeks Street construction compound has been removed. The report said the program of small-scale, low-cost activations, to be held during the Light Rail testing phase up to March, “Would attract new visitors and to engage the local residents to reconnect and come back into and enjoy the Kingsford and Kensington town centres.”

HEFFRON TENNIS PARK CENTRE
On Aug 10, the Heffron Park Tennis Centre was officially opened. The centre is open from 7am-10pm Monday to Friday, and 7am-8pm on weekends. It is fantastic to see the Eastern Suburbs getting more sporting facilities as part of the Randwick Council’s Heffron Park masterplan.
Council has designs on Sculpture by the Sea
Randwick Council is trying to muscle in on the "Sculpture by the Sea" event, held successfully in neighbouring Waverley LGA since 1997. Councillors agreed to a motion that council staff should approach Sculpture by the Sea organisers to gauge interest of the organisers to move the exhibition to Randwick City. Meanwhile, council officers will investigate the feasibility and the costs associated with holding the event in the Randwick LGA. Just in case Waverley Council doesn’t want to give up the successful event, Council will approach Waverley Council and "Sculpture by the Sea" concerning a potential partnership hosting the exhibition in future years.
