20 year-old gunman Adam Lanza opened fire on the students and faculty of Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut during the morning hours of Friday, December 14. 27 people, including 20 children between 6 and 7 years old, died during the attacks. The gunman, Adam Lanza, shot himself dead. 2012 came to a violent end. What should have been a happy holiday season was literally gunned down by a lunatic. A search for underlying answers, of course, is under way: gun control, mental illness, our violent culture. We should not have to live in a situation where we need to think of everyday tasks as if we were in a low intensity combat zone, but we are. This is how many in our society have been living for decades in disadvantaged communities. It is now becoming nationwide and not so rare. If it can happen in Newtown, CT; or Aurora, CO; or Columbine, it can happen in East Cobb. There are so many pieces to solving this puzzle of random violence and we are many discussions away from seeing a resolution. I will be watching, listening and weighing in on ways to stop this senseless violence. I hope you will, too. Despite this tragedy, I still believe that there are far more good people in the world than there are bad, and that people are inherently good. As the publisher of the EAST COBBER, I am fortunate to spotlight so many good people who live and work in East Cobb. Since 1993, this magazine shares stories, features special events and lists support groups and clubs that promote the good going on in our community. This issue continues that tradition of good news with our annual Do Good Guide (page 10), and Terrific Teens (page 16), to mention just a couple of highlights. I believe the EAST COBBER magazine as well as the EAST COBBER Parade & Festival, are small pieces of the puzzle that may help prevent another tragedy. As I advised my children, in light of the Newtown tragedy: “you need to combat evil by being a force of good in this world.” So simple, yet so doable. Experiential Learning Makes the Difference at Fellowship Christian School

Fellowship Christian School is a hidden gem for East Cobb families, but more and more families have discovered the benefits of the school’s location, reputation and local bus route. Located in nearby Roswell, Fellowship prepares students for collegiate pursuits in a learning community that nurtures excellence in academics, arts and athletics while exercising their Christian faith through community involvement. Academically, Fellowship is very competitive with high standard achievement test scores and college acceptances. What makes Fellowship an exceptional school is the experiential programs that take classroom lessons into the world. In the excerpts below, students and teachers share their thoughts on a few of the experiential learning opportunities available at Fellowship. TREAD Through TREAD, I have experienced activities that I ordinarily would not have chosen and done things that have challenged me. On a hiking trip, our instructor encouraged us to find God’s fingerprint throughout nature. At the campfire that evening, we all had the opportunity to provide our own take on what we saw. I have become more aware of the world God created while making new and stronger friendships. —David Consoli, Senior FCS World War II Remembrance Tour Not many people get to travel to Europe through school. The trip was a World War II Remembrance Tour, so we saw historic sites related to that era. I learned about different cultures and expanded my vision beyond everyday life as I know it. It is definitely an experience I will always remember and I am grateful to attend a school that offers trips like this.

Fellowship Ambassadors Fellowship Ambassadors is a group of upperclassmen selected to represent the school during special events. We learn and develop leadership skills through service opportunities and talking with community leaders and parents who share their life experiences with us. I am glad to have this opportunity because I hope to become an Army Ranger and will need strong leadership skills. —Ross Schoendorf, Junior Operation Christmas Child Our school provides us many opportunities to impact our world through service. One of the best is working in the Operation Christmas Child warehouse preparing boxes for children living in poverty. Most schools wouldn’t let their students miss a day of school to serve others, but at Fellowship we learn that serving makes a big difference. When you consider that a child living in poverty receives their nicely packed and full box, it makes a huge difference in their life—and ours, too! —Madison Kent Ski Trip The past two years we’ve gone to Breckenridge, Colorado for a week of skiing and snowboarding. Whether it’s racing a fellow “TREADhead”, challenging myself on a Black Diamond run, or learning how to perfect my jumps and turns, this experience provides plenty of fun. But perhaps the most meaningful experience came from being more than 9000 feet above sea level. While on that mountaintop, I found myself thinking about how big and great our God really is and how grateful I am to be able to experience God and his Creation in such a real way.

Involving our students in the lessons we teach is fundamental to providing a great education while developing a deep love of learning. Early in the school year, we study a unit on the solar system and the history of space travel. We then go on a trip to the U.S. Space and Rocket Center and frame the experience within a Biblical perspective. In essence, when we break out of the classroom on trips like this, we are breaking down barriers to learning, while deepening a student’s faith.

Through our science units, the students experience hands-on experiments to gain knowledge of science facts, as well as apply those facts to gain critical thinking skills. Students work in groups and learn to value each other’s opinion, handle disagreements and learn how to communicate with each other. This kind of experience impacts their educational experience immediately and prepares them for a great future of learning.

CERT Course Offered The Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) course is a 20-hour program that trains people to be better prepared for response to emergency situations in their communities. When emergencies happen, CERT members can give critical support to first responders, provide immediate assistance to victims, and organize spontaneous volunteers at a disaster site. CERT members can also help with nonemergency projects that help improve the safety of the community. Do Good Guide Make A New Year’s Resolution To Volunteer At the start of each new year, people make a list of things they are going to do to improve their lives. We say we are going to eat less and work out more. Think about making resolutions that will not only help you, but help your community. Volunteerism can take many forms. East Cobb Ace Hardware Continues Family Tradition with New Store

The new East Cobb Ace Hardware store opened on November 19th in the Shallowford Falls Shopping Center off Johnson Ferry Road, but, as co-owner Steve Ragsdale explains, he and his store have a much longer history as a retailer in the community. Ragsdale and his business partner, Grover Dobbins, previously owned Ragsdale’s Ace Hardware, which began back in 1954 when Ragsdale’s father, Bill, set up shop in an old house on Roswell Road. The family tradition of being the friendly, neighborhood hardware dealer has continued over the years in various locations. As a constant reminder of that legacy, a picture of the family’s original store hangs prominently in the new location, overlooking the checkout area. Ian Berryman, of Troop 955, earned his Eagle Rank on August 16. He celebrated this accomplishment with a Court of Honor at Johnson Ferry Baptist Church on December 8th. For his Eagle Project, Ian wanted to make a difference for a group that is often overlooked, so he contacted the Devereux Georgia Treatment Network. Devereux Georgia is one of the few psychiatric residential treatment centers licensed in Georgia. They serve male/female residents under the age of 22 who suffer from severe challenges brought on by abuse, neglect, and/or mental illness. Ian decided to design and build two sand therapy tables for the therapists to use with the children. These therapy tables allow patients to express feelings through play that might be difficult with verbal interaction only. He built the sand trays to lift off for convenient cleaning, and he designed rolling carts/tables for them, so they could be moved from room to room easily by the therapists. He also led a drive in his school, scout troop, and neighborhood for Devereux’s various therapy needs: sand, art, group, and sports. Ian is a 10th grader at Fellowship Christian School.

Terrific teens The Dodgen Middle School FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) robotics team, Project Ninja #4631, struck like a thief in the night on Saturday, December 15 at their first qualifying event sponsored by the Kell High School FTC team. All teams have the challenge of building and programming a robot to achieve several specific goals. As one of two middle school teams in a competitive field of high school teams from around the state, Dodgen finished as the winner of the Connect Award and assisted with a runner up alliance victory. Moreover, they were nominees for the Rockwell Collins Innovate Award, the Think Award and took second place in the Inspire Award, which secured them a spot in the FTC GA State Qualifier on March 2, 2013. The Dodgen Robotics Team’s mission is to introduce, promote and inspire the community to understand and appreciate STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math). Good Public Schools Are the Lifeblood of Our Community By Anne Davidson, Legislation Committee Chair, East Cobb County Council of PTAs At this time, perhaps more than in any other, good public schools are critical to the future of public school students AND their communities. A good education opens opportunities for students – more options for college or technical school, greater employment potential, higher wages, and the possibility of a better lifestyle. For communities, a highly educated population generates entrepreneurs and attracts and keeps employers. This is especially important in a global economy where employers can choose, instead, to hire employees in less expensive venues half a world away. Good public schools not only graduate students who become active contributors to the local economy, but they support a more competitive housing market. Real estate in good public school districts commands higher housing prices, and correspondingly, fewer foreclosures. Good public schools are gathering places, contributors of new ideas, and sources of community and business participation. Public schools are the lifeblood of the community. The East Cobb community has reason for pride in its public schools. The quality of education is high. This past year, Cobb County seniors in the class of 2012 had overall SAT scores that surpassed their statewide peers’ average by 68 points and the national average by 22 points. In East Cobb County -- Walton, Wheeler, Lassiter, Pope and Kell high schools had overall scores that were higher than the national average. On the ACT, last year’s Cobb graduates marked the seventh consecutive year in which they beat national averages in all four subject areas tested: English, Math, Reading and Science. Likewise, Cobb County elementary and middle school students have consistently improved their scores and topped national averages on the Iowa Tests of Basic Skills, or ITBS. This success is the result of excellent teachers, motivated students and engaged parents. Another source of pride is East Cobb community’s participation in its public schools. The East Cobb County Council of PTAs (ECCC) has 30,546 active parents and other community members. The ECCC is a part of the Georgia State PTA 9th district – which has 77,228 members. Parents and grandparents are active in East Cobb schools as helpers in classrooms, members of the school councils, planting school “learning” gardens, assisting in the front offices, and in any number of other volunteer roles. This level of involvement reveals a community that is heavily invested in a good public education for its students. However, in this troubled economy, East Cobb schools face significant fiscal challenges that could impact edu-

cational quality in the coming years. Nearly half of Cobb County’s funding comes from the State of Georgia -- and, since 2003, austerity cuts have reduced state funding by $60 -$70 million a year. That is a cumulative loss of $353 million in school funding. For next year, state legislators report that there will be over a $300 million budget gap – as a result of increased demands on state revenues for Medicaid and other obligations. While the Governor has asked for a 3% budget cut across all departments (exempting the K-12 state funding formula), it is unclear how the budget gap will be closed, or if additional cuts to state education funding may occur. Education funding at the county level has similar budgetary challenges. Due to state education funding cuts and reduced property tax revenues the Cobb County School District (“the District”) has had to cut its budget dramatically. This has meant increased student/teacher ratios – and consequently less one-on-one student/teacher time, 350 unfilled teacher positions, a reduction in the school year from 180 days to 177, and 3 furlough days for all staff. All of these developments negatively impact the quality of education for East Cobb students and their community. At the same time, many of East Cobb’s schools are aging and in need of capital improvement and infrastructure repair. In response, the District has proposed to replace the existing Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST) with Ed-SPLOST 4. (A SPLOST is a 1% sales tax on retail goods. It is an alternative to issuing bonds – for which, in the past, the District -- and therefore its property tax payers -- have paid substantial interest.) If voters approve Ed-SPLOST IV in March 2013, it will replace some of the oldest and least efficient school buildings, make necessary infrastructure renovations, and refresh technology and safety resources. This includes replacement facilities and/or major additions or renovations to Walton, Lassiter, Pope, Wheeler and Sprayberry high schools, East Cobb middle, and Mt. Bethel, Sope Creek, Kincaid and Tritt elementary schools, among others. The District reports that Ed-SPLOST 4 will have improvements for everyone one of its 112 schools. In an unrelenting economy that produces continued threats to education funding, what can parents and community members do to support education in East Cobb? • Be informed – understand the fiscal challenges facing public schools. • Communicate with your government representatives. Let them know how important education is to you, to your community, and its future, and ask that education be supported and fully funded.

EAST COBBER Day Camp Guide Making a Good Day Camp Decision For Your Child If you’re a parent considering summer camp opportunities for your child, you might consider a day camp rather than (or in addition to) a sleepaway camp experience. Parents often view sending their kids to day camps as a “stepping stone” to overnight camp. They might think day camps are for “younger kids” and sleepaway camps are for older ones. In some cases this might be true, but not always. One of the advantages you have as a parent when comparing day camps to overnight camps (or even day camps to day camps) is that a day camp’s customer base is generally restricted to its local geographical area. This makes things easier for you to learn more about the camp. For example, you can contact the camp’s current or former customers for references, and you can even visit the camp before making a decision. So how do you know you’re picking the right day camp for your child? Here’s a 3-point checklist to help ensure the day camp you choose is the right one for your child. 1. Check references. Since day camps primarily serve local customers, it should not be difficult to find a few families who’ve attended the camp before. Talk to them about their impressions of the program. If you hear good things, you might have a winner. Mixed reviews, on the other hand, could be a “red flag” alerting you to research the camp further. But if everyone you speak with has only negative things to say, then rule that day camp out, pat yourself on the back for taking the time to conduct a thorough investigation, and keep looking for a different camp. 2. Involve your child in the decision making process. Research shows that kids enjoy camp more when they’re

included in the decision-making process. Since there are so many different types of day camps to choose from, it’s important to match your child’s interests and personality with the activities the day camp offers. Accordingly, it’s advisable to take a tour of the camp and/or attend an open house together with your child. After you’ve toured the camp, ask for your child’s opinion. This can be a much better approach than unilaterally deciding which day camp your child will attend without consulting them ahead of time, as asking for their input means they’ll probably have a more positive camp experience in the end. 3. Tour the camp and meet the staff. Most day camps hold open houses or organized facility tours during the prime camp enrollment season (generally springtime). These events are great opportunities for you to meet the staff, ask questions and see how the camp operates on a day-to-day basis. You might even decide to attend several camps’ open houses for a point of comparison and to see where you get the best “vibe.” Attending a day camp open house or touring the facility is the single BEST way to see what you’re getting into ahead of time. Camp is such a personal experience. You want your child to connect with his or her counselors on a personal level and admire them as leaders and role models. You owe it to yourself and your child to pick a day camp that your child will look back on later in life and say, “I remember that camp, and it was the best experience of my life!” Your child deserves the best. It’s your responsibility as a parent to put him or her in an environment where they can thrive, and choosing the right day camp can make this happen for you. Happy day camping!

Financial Peace University Program Offered at Local Churches Financial Peace University (FPU), the 9-week program created by Dave Ramsey, has helped more than one million families positively change their financial future. This life-changing program teaches families and individuals how to handle their money through common-sense principles and small group accountability. FPU is available for churches, companies, military bases, financial literacy programs, Spanish speaking organizations and community groups. As they work on a Total Money Makeover, the average family pays off $5,300 in debt and saves $2,700 in the first 91 days after beginning FPU and is completely out of debt, except for the mortgage, in 18 to 24 months. “We’ve actually relieved ourselves of over $50,000 worth of debt in two years just from using these principles,” said Russ Lee, former FPU participant. Dave Ramsey began teaching FPU classes in 1994 every night around Nashville, Tennessee. In 1997, FPU was made available on video across the country with thousands of classes around the nation today. The program is made up of 9 life-changing lessons taught by Dave on DVD in a fun and entertaining way. “I like to put the cookies on the shelf where everyone can reach them,” says Ramsey. After each lesson the group meets to help each other plan budgets, discuss successes and temptations, and support each other in their journey to beat debt and build wealth. East Cobber Wins Award from NAACP East Cobb resident, Eric E. Jacobson, Executive Director for the Georgia Council on Developmental Disabilities (GCDD), was recently honored by the Atlanta Chapter of the NAACP for the work of GCDD and its signature concept, the Real Communities Initiative. Real Communities was launched in 2009 and provides cutting edge, intentionally inclusive activities throughout the State with ss Eric E. Jacobson a focus on projects that create opportunities for all people - with and without disabilities - to be fully engaged in the social life and civic development of their communities. Jacobson accepted the award at the 14th Annual Atlanta NAACP Jondelle Johnson Freedom Fund Dinner on November 3 at the Hyatt Regency Atlanta. Rev. Lee C. Franklin, Religious Affairs Liaison, Chairman’s Office National NAACP, presented the award to Jacobson. “Because the brand of NAACP is so strong, there are many organizations that come to us with opportunities of partnership. We have to be very selective with those orga-

Programs range from transportation to housing to community building efforts that bring people together in new ways. GCDD’S current Real Communities Initiatives include Refugee Family Services/Global Growers Network in Atlanta Clarkston area, City of Milton Better Together, Forsyth Farmers Market in Savannah, Centenary United Methodist Church in Macon, Korean Coalition in Atlanta, Gwinnett Gives Time Bank in the Atlanta area and the City of Fitzgerald. “I accept this award on behalf of the people in Atlanta, Georgia and communities throughout this country who are isolated, segregated and are not recognized for the value, gifts and talents they bring - these are often people labeled as having a developmental disability, Jacobson said. “Real Communities creates a bridge, a place where everybody can dance,” he continued. “Together, we can build places all over this city and state where the barriers come down and people want to stay and raise their children. “ The presentation of Jacobson’s award was preceded by a video overview of the Real Communities Initiative. Senior Citizen Council of Cobb County Advocates for 55+ Population The Senior Citizen Council of Cobb County was formed in 1973. It is a tax-exempt membership based organization, sponsored by Cobb Senior Services, whose primary function is to further the common good and general welfare of Cobb County adults over the age of 55. It now oversees the activities of approximately 50 clubs and over 3,500 individual members. Other organizations striving to meet the needs of seniors in the community consider the Council as a role model in Georgia.

Additionally, the Senior Council takes on projects to promote senior issues within the community. Recently, the Council sponsored many popular programs such as the Vial of Life, Medical Information Cards, Resource Directory, SafeAmerica, as well as offering annual scholarships to students enrolled in Gerontology programs through the College of Continuing Education, CAREing Center, at Kennesaw State University. The following Cobb County residents are current officers for the Senior Citizen Council: President: Nysia Lanier 1st Vice President: Betty Sisk 2nd Vice President: Mary Francis McClellan Secretary: Harold Smith

The Senior Council participates on a delegate capacity in community organizations such as Co-AGE, Atlanta Regional Commission Task Force on Aging, and Cobb Services for the Elderly. By providing a forum for communication, the Council creates the vehicle to encourage seniors to stay involved in the community and to have a voice on aging issues. It also provides encouragement by awarding Community Awards for outstanding seniors and community leaders at a luncheon held annually.

The Bulletin, a monthly newspaper published by the Council, provides space for the Senior Centers to advertise schedules of events, activities, classes, and inform the senior of current events and legislation pertinent to their interests and age.
