ssGlendy Martin stands behind her Jalopy Jelly jars
Free Lesson and Interview
Three years ago, East Cobb resident and Wheeler High School alum Glendy Martin was working as a hairdresser when she began making candied jalapeños in her kitchen. Glendy says she had always loved pepper jellies and recipe experimenting, so when she first brought home an armful of jalapeño peppers and said she was going to “try something new,” her husband didn’t suspect anything out of the ordinary.

Little did he know that the sweet jalapenos would be such a hit both at Glendy’s salon and among family and friends who encouraged her to start marketing the product. Without a commercial kitchen, Glendy found co-packer Hillside Orchard Farms, a company that makes a similar product, to produce the relish, and soon quit her job to promote Jalopy Jelly throughout the community.
NO COURT DIVORCE
Today, Jalopy Jelly can be found in over 30 specialty stores in the Atlanta metro area and in Whole Foods stores in Georgia. Glendy says she already ships from Chicago to Canada and is looking forward to expanding to Whole Foods stores across the southeast. “When people taste it,” says Glendy, “we can pretty much watch them in a five second period turn around and come back.”

Jalopy Jelly is served best atop cream cheese with crackers, but it is also great as a condiment or marinade, or in hushpuppies, baked beans, or omelets. All natural, the jelly sells for $6.99 a jar. Since its launch in 2007, Jalopy Foods has expanded its line of products to include both Georgia Peach and, most recently, Mango flavors. Glendy says Pineapple is expected to be released this summer, and Maraschino Cherry is in the works. Glendy and her husband, Scott, have three children: Erin (29), Tyler (26), and Mallory (19), and, when not cooking, enjoy going to the movies and babysitting their two grandkids. Look for Glendy at the Marietta Farmer’s Market Saturdays through November, from 8am to noon. Glendy’s story will air on Food Network’s Cooking Channel on June 21st on the new show, Food Crafters.
