Mundare Novice Vipers win silver Michelle Pinon Editor Emotions and adrenaline were sky high during the Mundare Novice Vipers championship game against the St. Albert Talons Feb. 10. Highflying action from end to end; and start to finish. This did not disappoint fans who came to cheer on their teams during the final game of the round robin noviceinitiation tournament. St. Albert got on the scoreboard first, just a few minutes into the game. Mundare answered the call and scored two goals late in the first period to forge ahead 3 -1. Then St. Albert rebounded, and scored a shorthanded goal near the end the second period to make it 3 - 2 for the home team. In the dying seconds of the second period the Vipers scored again to pull ahead 4 - 2.
The final 20 minutes proved to be just as exciting as the Talons scored twice late in the period to tie the game 4 - 4. Sudden death overtime, five-on-five, began. Everyone was on the edge of their seats or standing with high anxiety and anticipation. The noise was deafening, and continued until t h e Ta l o n s scored with less than two minutes remaining in overtime to win. The host team was very gracious in defeat, and exemplified outstanding sportsmanship. It was a heartbreaking loss, but all of the players played their hearts out. Vipers #15 KazLynn McLellan was presented with the Heart and Hustle Award, while goaltender #33 Dylan Batog earned the Most Valuable Player Award.
