Dr. John Slanina recently received the Rural Service Award honouring him for his continuing involvement and dedicated work as a physician in the town of Lamont. Slanina has been a part of our communities medical team for almost eight years out of the local hospital and medical clinic, previously working in Two Hills for about six months. Slanina also worked through the Canadian Armed Forces in many other communities across Alberta and British Columbia. The award he received is meant to recognize the physicians who have worked in rural communities for an extended period of time, and the long standing contributions they have made. The 20th annual Rural and Remote Medicine Course was held on April 26, 2012 at the Chateau Whistler in Whistler B.C. This course is the largest gathering of rural and remote doctors in the country with over 700 people attending. Dr. Slanina When asked about his reason for choosing to remain a rural doctor, Slanina explained that “it is the pleasure of helping the people, not just writing a prescription, he says that in small towns, you have the experience of doing everything. You are often with your patients for their entire lives, instead of just a few short moments. Which is far from the experiences of city doctors, who may only know their patients for a few months, or even just a few short moments. According to Slanina, there is no sense of family in the city as you would find in a rural community. When asked about when he decided that medicine was truly the career path he wanted to pursue, Slanina told of a time when he was still a young child. He explained that he had once gone to a doctor himself, and had been nervous going in. However, the way this doctor had acted towards him as a young child remained as a constant inspiration to him. From then on, he always had the same answer for anyone who asked him what he was going to be when he grew up. A doctor. This inspiration was eventually carried out to reality, and he has been following his childhood aspiration for his entire life. Slanina is originally from Romania, and that is where he graduated from medical school in 1982. It was in 1990 that Slanina came to Canada, worked to
