cover designer NCLR Art Director dana ezzell gay is an Associate Professor at Meredith College in Raleigh, NC. She has an MFA in Graphic Design from the Rhode Island School of Design in Providence. Her design work has been recognized by the CASE Awards and in such publications as Print Magazine’s Regional Design Annual, the Applied Arts Awards Annual, American Corporate Identity, and the Big Book of Logos 4. She has been designing for NCLR since the fifth issue, and in 2009 created the current style and design. The “new look” earned NCLR a second award for Best Journal Design from the Council of Editors of Learned Journals in 2010.

Mary Shannon Johnstone is an Associate Professor of Art at Meredith College in Raleigh and is represented by Points of View Photography Gallery in Raleigh. She has a BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and an MFA in photography from Rochester Institute of Technology. She has had solo exhibitions in Chicago, Durham, Raleigh, and Rochester. Her numerous honors include three Best of Competition awards in the North Carolina Annual Photographers Exhibition. Her work has appeared in American Photo, Outdoor Photography, Popular Photography, and Peterson’s PhotoGraphics, as well as on the covers of North Carolina writer Michael Parker’s If You Want Me To Stay, published by Algonquin Books, and NCLR 2009.
