Help families spend more time doing the things they enjoy A new and exciting pilot project to help life-threatened children, young people and their families spend more time doing the things they enjoy is being run by Community Services Volunteers (CSV) to help EACH families across Suffolk and North Essex. Volunteers are being sought to provide practical support to families within their homes including cooking meals, a weekly shop, ironing, gardening, support for siblings and much more. These duties will require a regular time commitment of a few hours per week or fortnight to be agreed between

volunteer and family, with an initial commitment of 6-12 months. Previous experience working with families/children is desirable but not essential. There’ll also be opportunities for small teams of volunteers to provide one-off support such as garden clearance or painting and decorating. If you think you could help a family or would like to find out more, please contact Hannah Diaper, CSV Family Volunteers Project Manager on: 01473 271334 or 07789 603304 or email Hdiaper@csv.org.uk

Make a difference with business! Corporate fundraising for EACH is a really rewarding way to support a charity in your local community. Charity of the Year partnerships, payroll giving, the EACH £50 challenge and volunteering are just some of the ways to get involved. Visit www.each.org.uk/corporate for more info and get some inspiration from some of our current supporters below... Sainsbury’s support: Sainsbury’s Ipswich Warren Heath store raised £10,000 in the past year for The Treehouse. We’ve enjoyed a fantastic relationship with them including the Flashmob with The Treehouse Choir, in store fundraising events and the £50 Challenge. Thank you! Network Rail: 20 volunteers from Network Rail visited The Treehouse to help remove tree stumps and clear an area of the garden for planting of wild flower seeds. Thanks for your hard work! Fairies and Elves: Children throughout Suffolk have been photographed as Fairies and Elves by Steve Tarling, Paul Peek and Mark Ashworth. The on-going series of competitions has raised over £5,200 and generated gorgeous photos! Visit www.thefairiesandelves.co.uk to find out about the next competition near you. Peak of fitness: A team of 50 Barclays Bank fundraisers and their clients took part in a 10 peaks challenge in aid of five charities including EACH. They went by coach from Norwich to Cumbria where they successfully climbed 10 summits in 14 hours on Saturday 14th June, with many of them returning to work on Monday! They set themselves a £25,000 target but they’ve raised over £33,000 with EACH receiving £6,612.62. Thanks to everyone who took part and to Big Walks for running the challenge.

Charity of the Month: Cambridge Building Society chose EACH as its Charity of the Month in May. Activities took place across 18 branches and volunteers came to Milton hospice to help with gardening. They also sponsored our Milton Gala day and have raised a fantastic £3,214! Proud supporters: Amgen in Cambridge Science Park are proud supporters of EACH, raising funds, volunteering and offering facilities free of charge. They hosted our Cambridgeshire Fundraising Summer Celebration and provided the refreshments – thank you! Thanks also to Bakkavor Bourne Prepared Produce who raised £5,000 through their corporate golf day. Taking the plunge: The Colchester Abseil in June proved a big hit with our corporate supporters. Thanks to Bidwells Chelmsford office, Beresfords Estate and Letting Agents, Hallmark Care Homes and First Call Contract Services for taking the plunge and raising hundreds of pounds! The next abseil is taking place on 22nd March 2015. Cycling to Pay for a Day: Staff from Innasol, an innovative renewable heating company in Essex, are cycling from Glasgow to their office near Witham in aid of EACH across five days. They’re aiming to raise £16,000 to ‘Pay for a Day’ at EACH.

Milton – Cambridgeshire

Quidenham – Norfolk

The Treehouse – Suffolk & Essex

It costs us around £16,000 in voluntary donations every day of the year to provide care and support to life-threatened children, young people and their families across Cambridgeshire, Essex, Norfolk and Suffolk. All day every day our care teams in Milton, Quidenham and The Treehouse deliver a wide range of care and support services tailored to suit the individual needs of children, young people and families. These include: • Short-break care • 24/7 symptom management support • Hydrotherapy • Music therapy • Specialist play • Care at end of life including memory making and funeral planning • Family support sessions

By giving or raising £5,300 you are effectively funding your local children’s hospice for a day.

By giving or raising £16,000 you are effectively funding a day at all three of our hospices.

To find out more visit: www.each.org.uk/payforaday or contact your local fundraising team (see page 20).

Become an EACH volunteer... EACH Volunteers play a vital role within the charity and we simply couldn’t cope without them. This year we celebrated all their support during Volunteers’ Week in June, by running a social media campaign with inspiring quotes and photos. This was a perfect opportunity to say ‘thank you’ but also to appeal for more help. Here are some highlights from the week: Volunteers undertake a diverse range of roles at EACH. These include running the hospice receptions, driving families to and from hospices, assisting care teams at sibling events, working in EACH shops, gardening, hospice maintenance, delivering talks in the community, attending fundraising events, organising collections and administration duties to name just a few.

Rosemary Cluff, Gardening volunteer “Volunteer gardening is a great way to meet like minded people. At the hospice we form a friendly team, who work together one day a week. The staff are always appreciative of our efforts and make us feel very welcome.”

Mike Barbour, Fundraising volunteer “There’s a real ‘buzz’ in seeing the plans for an event come to fulfilment and to know that every penny raised is directly helping to fund the valuable work done here.”

Clare Bates, HR and Volunteers Co-ordinator, said: “Being an EACH volunteer is rewarding. You get the opportunity to make new friends, put your skills to good use or learn new ones and have fun while knowing you’re making a difference to local life-threatened children, young people and their families.” To find out more about volunteering at EACH visit: www.each.org.uk/volunteering or contact Clare Bates, EACH HR and Volunteer Co-ordinator on 01223 205190 or email: volunteer@each.org.uk

Helen’s story Milton Hospice celebrates its 25th anniversary this year, and Helen Bailey, now 34 years old, was just nine years old when she presented Princess Diana with a bouquet of flowers at the opening of Milton Children’s Hospice on August 1, 1989. Helen was a healthy baby but at 18 months old she became unwell and was diagnosed with a rare condition called Moyamoya Syndrome. Helen has a left hemiplegia and uses a wheelchair for mobility. Helen also has severe learning disabilities and epilepsy. At the age of 14 Helen went to residential school and now lives in a care home, where she is visited by her family every week. Helen was one of the first children to receive care at the hospice and her parents Sally and Charles paid a visit to Milton hospice this summer to see how the facility has changed and to reminisce about their time at the hospice with Helen. Charles said: “Helen loved being at the hospice and interacting with the staff and other children. Looking after a child like Helen was so tough, and our lives were often put on hold, but the hospice made it so much easier to cope.”

Sally said: “We had a practice the day before to make sure Helen knew how to present Princess Diana with the flowers, but she wouldn’t hand them over in rehearsal. When the big day arrived Helen was excellent; she handed over the flowers to Diana with a big smile and we were really proud of her. “ The hospice has changed so much in the 25 years since it opened, and it’s wonderful to know it’s still here and supporting families just like ours.”

“EACH kept us going through the most difficult of days”

Parents Leigh and Toby Smith from Norwich have been fundraising for EACH, the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital and Great Ormond Street Hospital in memory of their daughter Beatrice who died at the tender age of 12 weeks. Leigh was part of a team of 40 cyclists this summer who completed a sponsored ride from Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital to Quidenham Hospice supported by husband Toby and their four year old son Elliott. Beatrice had a rare heart condition called restrictive cardiomyopathy and was placed at the top of the UK transplant list awaiting a heart, but she became much weaker and

required much more medical support. After Beatrice died the family received care and support from the EACH Quidenham hospice. Leigh said: “In the darkest and most painful of times, EACH has given us the best in the worst possible situation. We now have positive memories of our time at Quidenham and the images of how peaceful Beatrice was there and how well they looked after her to keep us going through the most difficult of days. We hope that through fundraising for these three charities we can help to give other families and children in similar situations the chances Beatrice and we have been given.”

Supporting grandparents Support for the whole family is very important at EACH. A grandparents’ bereavement support group has been running at The Treehouse since last year and Ivan and Sue Clarke from Ipswich have benefited from the service. Their grandson Elliot George Brinkley died in February last year aged just 15 days. Ivan and Sue had to deal with their own grief and the struggles faced by their daughter Laura and son-in-law Daryn. Sue said: “When you’re at the grandparents’ group everyone understands what you’ve been through and you all realise you’re not alone. It’s been awful seeing the pain Laura and Daryn have been through, it’s like grieving twice, but we’ve felt supported all the way through – EACH is like a comfort blanket.”

Help us build a new hospice for Norfolk! EACH has gained planning permission to build a new Norfolk children’s hospice in Framingham Earl. We’ll be launching a £10million fundraising appeal in late Autumn and need your help! One of the first opportunities to support the appeal will come this Christmas when we are asking people to give an extra gift of £10 to kick start our £10million appeal through whichever means they prefer. If everyone in Norfolk did this, we’d have raised enough money to enable us to start building the new hospice. If you own a business or work for a company, big or small, you can join our new Corporate Partners Network and look to raise money towards the new hospice during the course of our appeal. Individuals, couples and families can become Foundation Members of the appeal and pledge to give a total of £3,600 over the likely three year period of the project. If you have children or are a teacher, why not get your school involved?

There will be a number of ways in which you can do this from cake sales to dress down days or perhaps hold your own sponsored event like a hopathon or a sponsored silence! If you’re a member of an adult or community group you could put on your own special event for the appeal like a coffee morning, race night or hold a tombola or raffle at your next event or meeting. If you’re looking for something a little more active you could take part in one of the events we’ll be holding throughout the appeal from a Colour Dash to a skydive and not forgetting our biggest event - Ride for Life. Keep an eye on our website for details of all of these as well as opportunities to take on a bigger challenge! These are only a few of the ideas we have and we’d love to hear about any you have which could help raise the money we need to build our new hospice in the heart of Norfolk. To talk to a member of the Norfolk Appeal Team to find out more then please call 01953 666767 or e-mail Norfolk@each.org.uk

We’ve launched a regular giving initiative called

Challenges - going the extra mile... Looking for an adrenaline filled rush? Want to see all the majestic views the world has to offer? Want to make the dream of a lifetime become a reality? Then take part in a challenge to reach your goals and raise vital funds for EACH. There are loads to choose from including: • Trekking the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu or through the Sahara • Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro • Cycling across Europe • Skydiving or abseiling • Trekking through the Himalayas and working on a Kathmandu Hospice project The possibilities are endless... A little closer to home, 25 runners took part in the Virgin London Marathon this year raising over £30,000 for EACH and many more supporters have braved mammoth cycle rides and extreme mud and obstacle runs.

We also saw 16 Team EACH cyclists ride from London to Paris completing the gruelling 300 mile challenge in time to watch the final stage of the 2014 Tour de France and we’ve secured 10 places for the 2015 event. EACH Suffolk fundraiser Vanessa Bell, who took part, said: “It was truly amazing; if I could go again tomorrow I would.” Thanks to everyone who took part, and a special thank you to Bruisyard Hall in Suffolk for sponsoring the team’s cycling tops which ensured the EACH cyclists were easy to spot! Visit www.each.org.uk/challenges to find out more or call Camilla on 01473 276193. We’re grateful to everyone who goes the extra mile to raise funds!

A gift you don’t have to wrap, but one that means so much

Gift of Care is a way of making a donation to EACH instead of giving traditional presents to family, friends and colleagues for any occasion. The majority of our costs are not for specialist equipment, but for delivering the care so vital to the children, young people and families we support. Here’s some examples of the Gift of Care options: £5 - Art supplies for a session of specialist play. £10 - Allows our catering staff to prepare and cook meals for all family members staying at the hospice. £20 - Essential care kit for our nurses to use when providing care in the family home. £37 - An hour of music therapy. £74 - Two hours of bereavement support for all family members. £148 - Four hours of care at end of life. If you’d like to speak to someone at EACH about Gift of Care, please call your local fundraising office (see page 20) or visit: www.each.org.uk/giftofcare

Shop for EACH! It’s all very busy in the trading department of EACH! We now have 17 shops after opening two new shops in Suffolk since the last edition of Footprints. Our Framlingham shop opened in June with EACH Ambassador Humphrey Burton CBE cutting the ribbon. Sales on opening day exceeded £1,500 - a great start! We also opened a shop in Sudbury. The Head teacher and pupils from Wells Hall Primary School attended the opening ceremony in July and sales that day reached £1,300. We’ll also be opening two new shops in Norfolk in the autumn at Swaffham and the outskirts of Norwich. This year Lowestoft and Stowmarket shops celebrate their fifth anniversary and many volunteers, who have been part of the team from opening day, will receive long-service awards. Congratulations – we couldn’t keep the shops open without you!

Our Cambridge shop opened four years ago which was a good enough reason for a party in July. This is our top shop in terms of turnover and is a real credit to manager Kate and her super volunteers. We’re always looking for reliable volunteers to help in our shops – please contact Clare Bates 01223 205190 or email clare.bates@each.org.uk EACH, Unit 7, Brunel Business Court, Brunel Way, Thetford, Norfolk, IP24 1HP. Fundraising thank yous Cambridge students lend their support: Abbey College in Cambridge has smashed its Pay for a Day of care target of £5,300, ending the academic year on an amazing £8,000! Funds were raised from the Spring Fair and May Ball, with students also volunteering in our Cambridge Shop. They’re already planning activities for the new academic year!

24 Hours of Golf: Paul Attoe, Danny Chapman, Julian Ellis and Neil Newton have completed a 24 hour golf marathon in aid of EACH and Prostate Cancer at Weston Park Golf Club. The four golfers played from 12 noon on Friday July 18th and through the night (including thunderstorms!) until 12 noon the following day. Corporate Golf Ventures made the night golf possible by providing lights to mark out holes, fairways and bunkers with golf balls which lit up. They raised a total of £9,308 (including Gift Aid) with EACH receiving £4,654. Big thanks to the team and everyone who made the challenge possible, including the army of caddies!

Tour de Force: Stage 3 of the Tour De France travelled through Cambridgeshire and Essex, and collections along the route raised £1,828 for EACH. Thanks to our fabulous army of volunteers who helped during the day! Strawberry success: Heather and Andy Bird held their 9th annual Strawberry Tea in Ketton in July and raised £810. The sun shone and the homemade strawberry jam was a big hit with the hungry customers. They’ve raised £8,330 from all their Strawberry Teas!

Circus Ball: Manor Barn in Henley, Ipswich, which is run by All Manor of Events, hosted a Circus ball on Saturday 7th June to raise £6,780 for EACH. It was organised by Kimberly Knott, an EACH Nurse, and her friends Andy and Katie Haywood-Farmer of All Manor of Events. More than 120 guests were treated to stilt walkers, fire throwing and a rodeo bull. Kimberley said: “It was a great success and we’re delighted everyone was so generous. It was hard work, but definitely worth it.”

Flower Festival: Over 4,500 visitors went to The Reflections Flower Festival at St Edmundsbury Cathedral in July which celebrated the 100th anniversary of the Diocese of St Edmundsbury and Ipswich. EACH was chosen as one of the beneficiaries and we’d like to thank Sue Cockram, Committee Chairman, organising committee members and volunteers. Colour Dash: The first EACH Colour Dash saw 350 runners get covered in coloured paint over a 5k course in Christchurch Park, Ipswich on 12th July. The event raised over £13,000 for EACH and was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone. Thanks to all participants and volunteers. If you missed out, join us for the next event on Sunday 7th June 2015.

Family Fun & Dog Day returns: Come and enjoy our Family Fun & Dog Day at the beautiful Layer Marney Tower near Colchester on Sunday 28th September. There’ll be dog classes and attractions for the family including petting cuddly alpacas and pygmy goats, dance displays, military vehicles and homemade refreshments.
