Khanty Mansiysk, (Russia), Nov. 26: The Indian challenge in the World Chess Cup ended after three of their Grandmasters wilted under pressure and lost their must-win games here. Grandmasters Surya Shekhar Ganguly, Krishnan Sasikiran and Sandipan Chanda lost their return games by identical 0-2 margins to bow out of the prestigious event. All the three Indians out of the seven that started the tournament had lost the first game and needed victories in their return games to remain in the hunt. Chanda went for the King’s Indian defence but it did not turn out be a good tactic against Russian Dmitry Jakovenko who seized the initiative early in the middle game. Chanda tried in vain for counterplay by sacrificing a pawn but ended up losing another in quick time. Ganguly faced the Chabonenko Slav against Wang Hao of China who played black. The opening saw the Indian relishing a little advantage but it was quickly neutralized by Hao through the exchange of queens in the middle game. —PTI

Brave Tigers edge out Toffees London, Nov. 26: An early three-goal salvo gave Hull City three vital points in securing a 3-2 win over Everton in the English Premier League on Wednesday. Stephen Hunt snatched the opener after nine minutes and Andy Dawson netted a free kick in the 20th minute before Dean Marney grabbed a third just before the half hour mark to leave Everton, themselves too close to the drop zone for comfort, shellshocked. After the break the Merseysiders fought their way back into the contest and a comical own goal from Kamil Zayatte four minutes after the restart gave David Moyes’ men a

EPL sliver of hope. Louis Saha converted a spotkick which Zayatte conceded by fouling the French striker midway through the second period but the Tigers then battened down the hatches and held on for a win which takes them to 15 points, level with the Toffees. Everton now have just one win in their last 10 games. Everton had won a League Cup encounter between the sides 4-0 earlier this season but were a pale shadow of themselves by comparison. Results: Fulham 3 (Nevland 43, Dempsey 67, 88) Blackburn 0; Hull 3 (Hunt 9, Dawson 20, Marney 28) Everton 2 (Zayatte 49—AFP o.g., Saha 65-pen).

Nov. 26: Vanessa and Samkelo are shining examples of athletes who have turned their disabilities into a source of triumph with single-minded determination.

DAY THREE RESULTS

Vanessa Low The 19-year-old athlete is a beacon for the German contingent and a source of inspiration for many others. Vanessa is the only sprinter at the event who uses Cheetahs or prosthetic limbs for both her legs. Due to the absence of other double amputees in her events which are the 100 metres and long jump, Vanessa had to be included in a tough field featuring athletes who held an edge over her. But the support she has received from the crowd has been stupendous. Feeling letdown after two meagre tries during the long jump event, her light-gray eyes lit up as onlookers and athletes stood up, clapping and cheering her ahead of her last attempt. Such encouragement is what each one of us needs,” a disabled athlete said as the crowd roared in unison as Vanessa began her run-up. It’s been hard for the young blonde to get over a gruesome accident that crippled her life and aspirations. Entering her teens, Vanessa was a talented handball player for Norderstedt LLZ and loved snowboarding. Three years ago in June, a month before her 16th birthday, Vanessa vaguely recalled how she missed seeing the speeding train at a level crossing in her hometown of Ratzeburg. “I cannot remember anything from that day. Maybe I’ll never know what exactly happened as I miss a large part of my memory,” said Vanessa with the help of coathlete who doubled up as a translator. Bed-ridden for nearly five months in a local hospital, others would have resigned themselves to their fate. But Vanessa didn’t. She read up about sportspersons with similar disabilities and American Cameron Clapp’s example caught her eye. Losing an arm and both legs in a similar train accident, Clapp went on to become a

top disabled athlete, actor and a motivational speaker. “That inspired me to become a sprinter,” she admitted. Still troubled by her loss, Vanessa’s tryst at the Games reveals her never-say-die spirit and the thirst to excel no matter what the odds are, a rehearsal for her ultimate aim — the Paralympic Games.

As he stood on the podium, the 100m gold medal glittering brightly around his neck, Samkelo remembered the crucial decision he took more than a decade ago which moulded his life and helped him transcend a painful period. Twelve years ago, Samkelo, then 8, was knocked out after he came

in contact with an live electrical wire while playing in his neighbourhood in Johannesburg. The first thing the doctors told him after he regained consciousness was that his arms needed to be amputated. “The pain was more internal, than external. Those nine months in rehabilitation were the longest in my life. As I lay there in the hospital, I said to myself ‘this is not the end. I can fight this.’ That decision changed my life,” he said. Athletics became the first love for this second-year law student whose determination to learn everything by himself gave him the courage to stand up to others. He still cherishes meeting compatriot Oscar Pistorius, a double amputee world record holder and drives a custom-geared car by himself. Finishing seventh in high jump on Wednesday, the 20year-old fought back to win the gold on Thursday. And he is not done. Next for me, is the Paralympics, he says. And finally, Samkelo’s resolute self came clear in one rock-solid reply. If he were given a chance to graft new arms like any other human being, would he take it? Never, the South African replied. “I don’t want hands. This is what my life is. This
