PUBLISHER'S WORD
Summer has arrived. Enjoy it.
In mid-June, two weeks after both kids were fully vaccinated, our family ventured down Route 20 to Bouckville for the annual Fiber Arts festival. I’ve covered a lot of ‘events’ over the past 15 months – some virtual, some pared down to a drive through, some with attendance heavily restricted to allow for social distancing. But this was an honest to goodness festival with people milling about enjoying the day. After spending an hour or so petting sheep, chatting with vendors and looking over the craftsmanship of Central New York’s knitters and weavers, we took the short drive to the picturesque village of Hamilton for lunch. It was the first time in well over a year that the four of sat down for a meal at a restaurant. It may be that the food and service were unusually good, but I think the real reason everything seemed so perfect was that it was normal – a family enjoying a day trip on a beautiful late spring day.
It’s not that we never left the house during the pandemic, but our destinations were purposefully planned to be away from other people. We went for hikes on many of the plentiful trails near our home or splashed around in streams on hot days. Shopping trips that might have included one child or both in the past became solo ventures during the pandemic. We treated ourselves to plenty of take-out dinners from area restaurants, eating lukewarm food at our kitchen table. Like millions of other families, we made the best of it, walking the fine line of attempting to create some sense of normalcy for the kids while adhering to the necessary guardrails of life during a pandemic. But it wasn’t the same… until now.
The July edition of Syracuse Woman Magazine has traditionally been about summer activities, food, events and music. Last year, in the throes of the pandemic, we were forced to switch gears, but this year we’re back on course. With the pandemic winding down and people confidently moving around again, we’ve added a new section to the magazine called "Out & About," where we feature destination establishments. In this edition, we tell the stories of Hot House Brewing at Barone Gardens in Cicero and Crazy Daisies café and garden center in Marietta. We also meet Amanda Hughes, who launched The Ice Cream Stand in downtown Syracuse. As you’re thinking about places to visit with friends or family, put these places on your list. On the cover is Joanna Jewett, a professional vocalist and marketing director at Arc of Onondaga who recently became the executive director of Music for the Mission, which fundraises to fight hunger through live music performances. It’s a great story of woman who is pairing her passion for music with an organization that is doing uplifting things in our community.
Summer has arrived and life is once again rich and eventful. Enjoy it!
