BRUCE PIERMARINI

Born in 1953, Bruce Piermarini is an abstract painter living and working in West Brookfield Massachusetts. He attended the School of Visual Arts in the mid 70’s and studied with the great color field painters in NYC at that time. He received his Masters of fine Arts degree in 1980 from the Maryland Institute, College of Art, Mt. Royal School of painting .1982 he met the Art critic and writer Ken Moffett, with whom he had a long affiliation. Over the past four decades, his work has been presented in numerous galleries and museums worldwide, the most recent being at the Sideshow Gallery in Brooklyn, New York. His process begins by imagining a shape and general color idea and making a drawing. The drawing is transposed to a plywood support, cut out, and then painted by pouring acrylic paint over the surface. A final coat of clear resin is applied to unify the surface. Smaller elements are then composed on the surface to bring together the color relationships. The artist’s intent is to make a glossy translucent object with a reflective surface much like that of a cell phone. I pad, TV or computer screen. The glassy edges are left rough and the objects look as though they have been cut out with a pair of scissors. Infused with color the objects come alive and have an inherent personality: An iconographic image with an identity, they are vibrant, funky, happy, pensive, hopeful, lively and almost edible.

SHOWS Hailed as “brilliant” by NBC New York, The Sweetback Sisters first emerged in 2007 with their debut EP, ‘Bang!’ The collection earned them a record deal with stalwart indie label Signature Sounds, and over the course of three ensuing albums, the band built a dedicated following in the US and Europe and racked up a heap of critical acclaim. The New Yorker raved that the women are “strong singers who revel in close harmonies,” while Sing Out! said that their music “bristles with the energy of the very best young American performers,” and NPR praised them as “Americana darlings with a roadhouse edge.” The Boston Globe described as “the perfect balance of sass, sincerity and swing”.

GILBERT PLAYERS PRESENTS

A lovable green ogre abandoned by his family, because he was different, lives in solitude in a far off swamp. He finds his life interrupted by fairy tale characters pushed out of their kingdom because they did not fit in by short-sighted King Farquaad. The King has demanded Princess Fiona, also cast away at a young age, to be his bride and wear the crown. He promises Shrek that he will let the fairy tale characters back if he rescues the princess from the tower. A happy ending ensues but only after they go through hilarious obstacles before they can live happily ever after. This is a highly awarded family musical for all ages.

OF MICE AND MEN

1/25, 26 @ 7:30 PM & 1/27 @ 2:30 pm $10 • Drama / student THEATER

John Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men remains one of America’s most widely read and beloved novels. Here is Steinbeck’s dramatic adaptation of his novel-as-play, which tells the classic story of an unlikely pair, two migrant workers in California during the Great Depression who grasp for their American Dream, profoundly touches readers and audiences alike. George and his simple-minded friend Lenny dream, as drifters will, of a place to call their own—a couple of acres and a few pigs, chickens, and rabbits back in Hill Country where land is cheap. But after they come to work on a ranch in the fertile Salinas Valley of California, their hopes, like “the best laid schemes o’mice an’ men,” begin to go awry.
