Student’s Corner Wiktor Dotter BA Milan Campus

Your School The modern trend of schools going international, assembling campuses all over the world has brought many changes in education and work atmosphere to students and staff. The ESE mix of representatives from several countries in the world creates a new generation of school-culture. My name is Wiktor, I am 20 years old and in my first year at ESE. Leaving home and adjusting to this new environment obviously came with many changes. Changes that I should be used to, as I moved to a boarding school in Sweden at the age of 15; and into the German Military Air Force with 19. One might think that these two severe different environments have little in common, but I understood that every establishment where people share an every-day-life in order to achieve ideal goals naturally creates a culture of its own. However, the ESE culture is not from Sweden, Germany or Italy. With students from over 33 different countries, the school creates an innovative new culture of its own. The question of how to adjust to the new environment, is given a whole new meaning considering how many people bring their part of sympathetic views “to the table”. The culture each person carries within himself is considered how we interpret given knowledge and actions among others. By the example of group work, which is practiced at ESE on a daily basis, the conflicts of intercultural cooperation become clear. Students might be just as ambitious, but tend to talk past each other. A number of people work together; think together; different cultures, different thoughts: A: “First, we figure out what the goal is in order to make the right approach.” B: “I will pretend listening to you, but really what I think is the best option.” C: “in order find the goal first we need a common direction of the path.” D: “Let’s talk about it over a glass of wine..” Misinterpretations as the following are hard to predict: A: “I’m going to clap him on the shoulder as a sign of friendship”, B: “Did he touch me on the shoulder because he thinks he is superior to me?” Attending ESE has taught me the importance of taking cultural differences into consideration in my daily studies. In my opinion it is quite simple: The essential step is just being aware of that there are other ways of thinking than “my own”. If everyone keeps this in mind half the work is done. Whether or not these different cultural interpretations contribute to superior outcomes or to a more complicated work atmosphere is for you to decide. Who knows, the decision you make might even improve our daily environment. -Modeling an ESE of your own.

Student’s Corner Dinara Rakhimbaeva MBA Milan Campus

My Experience I am an MBA student in ESE Milan campus. As my background is philosophy I wish to describe my experience in ESE as philosopher and as a business woman, I have to be honest and say that this is one of best experiences in my life. From first steps at ESE London campus I felt it and for my second term I had this wonderful opportunity to join the Milan Campus, it was a pity to leave my classmates and professors in London, but the decision was made and without hesitation flew to Milan, where from my first sight I understood that this is the place where I want to be. The positive attitude of Mary Narenzo brought me more confidence and encouraged me to stay in Milan even if my Italian was so basic at that moment, which was my first worry! The word “experience” may refer , somewhat ambiguously, both to mentally unprocessed immediately -perceived events as well as to the purported wisdom gained in subsequent reflection on those events of interpretation of them. Most wisdom-experience accumulates over period of time, in my life one of the attraction of this this wisdom experience is ESE Milan campus, I wish to highlight it as gaining general wisdom-experience from specific momentary event as this event is all good combination of business knowledge such as financial accounting , corporate finance ,marketing, human resources, business ethics and strategic management , same time with mental, emotional and spiritual experiences. What I like most here is the flexibility, customized learning, tailored to suit my needs in study with extensive range of electives and concentrations. All our professors, even Professor D’Anna dedicate their time and experiences. I have all the advantages of a course located in Italy’s, the world’s leading financial and fashion centre. Working alongside people from around the world gives me the global opportunities to do business anywhere in the world. I feel confident as ESE Milan provides me a strong foundation of principles and practice of strategic management and at the same time a substantial base of new concepts and knowledge. All these new skills, analytical tools and perspectives will give me more opportunities in life to become one of the leaders of an international business. I am sure that ESE is great global community, which selects the very best and makes them even better. As all my classmates are the great, ambitious young people from around the world from India, Ukraine, Georgia, Latvia, Czech Republic, African countries. I am proud of the time which I spent in this school, for me this has been a life changing experience.

The Intern Insider Mark DeWeerd Master in Marketing ESE Milan First of all, I would like to express my gratitude to Ana Kesler, placement coordinator ESE Milan, who arranged an interview with one of the top 3 biggest companies in the world. It was an honor for me to be selected for an interview with General Electric (Healthcare). An internship within General Electric - London is a privilege. It is such a valuable experience bringing theory into practice in an international business environment. Being responsible for downstream marketing activities focused on optimizing sales has been an excited challenge. The learning curve I envisioned became true, and that enabled me to grow in terms of personal development and at the same time increased my knowledge within various international marketing disciplines. My international experience within General Electric has proven to be one of the most excited parts of business to me. Once having worked in an international environment it certainly becomes addictive, meeting people from all over the world and sharing cultural differences related to personal and business scenario’s. A multi-cultural work environment enriches a company in terms of knowledge and spirit. Part of that, one of the most valuable lessons in General Electric that I have learned is how to deal with cultural differences and integrity, both elements that are so crucial to success. Overall, having worked for such a great company it truly has increased my opportunities for the future in order to be successful.

The Intern Insider Luca Rizzi Master in Management ESE Milan My adventure at ESE began in January 2007, when, following my sister’s advice I visited the Milan Campus. As soon as I stepped in the building I was immersed into a completely international environment – which was a fundamental requirement for me among the schools I had visited. After a 6 month experience in Australia I returned to Milan to enroll in a Master in Management at ESE. As on my first visit, the environment was completely international, my classmates came from all over Europe from Russia, from Holland and so on forth. The same applies for the professors. The deciding factor that made me chose ESE from other schools was the fact that at school I was considered a person, not just a number or just another student. The limited number of students gave me a more direct contact with our professors. I can honestly say that this opportunity has allowed me to grow both personally and culturally – by relating with students of different nationalities both in and out of class. One of the reasons why I moved to Milan was to learn more about the fashion world which has always interested me. Through ESE’s placement program I had an interview with Stefano Martinetto, CEO of Futurenet Group (www.futurenet.co.it). My experience as an intern in a young working environment was fantastic, the internship did not involve the usual copies and coffee as many other companies do. I have had the possibility to prove my skills daily – with more responsibilities and dedicating myself to successfully completing all my tasks which allowed me to receive at the conclusion of my internship a job offer within the company. Both my educational and internship experience have enriched by abilities to prove my worth. I cannot thank ESE enough for all that they have done. I would advise anyone who would undergo a life changing experience to participate in a Master at ESE.

Excerpt From The The Philosophy of The School “This letter is me. This empty page is the reflection of my emptiness. For a long time I’ve felt sickened by all that I see in me, by all the signals that show a lowering of my strength, a return to the past. I dig and dig inside but I can’t find anything of value, not even the consciousness of having no value. A state of unhappiness, insecurity, fear, makes me A stranger to You and (to) my own life. I try to find any stratagem to escape from it, but the effect only lasts for an instant. My will is still deeply buried! The work of observing myself leads me to greater disappointment. Wherever I look, I always see the same grimace of unpleasantness. The mirror of the world, of others, has never been brighter, clearer. Some parts are like a “magnifying glass” and show me every detail with ruthlessness. Others, less lucid, denser and more distant, need more time to send their image to me. But all the world knows. I defend myself, I try to shield myself… I try to be brave, but I’m exhausted. My back is against the wall. The limits of my being suffocate me. I know you’ve given me so many chances and I’ve only Taken the crumbs. I suffer because of this… the thought of what could have been, of what could have been done… “Mending the world means healing oneself.” These words of yours are working inside of me. I’m more humiliated by the thought of having been an obstacle to Your plan, than by my own failure. My presumption, my assumption that I was knowledgeable, has caused me to miss the target. I’ve jeopardized the evolution of thousands of men and women who are in your dream; and waiting to make the passage; I’ve compromised their ‘journey’ towards integrity. I know that the opportunity is still great, even now, even in these conditions. I know that everything can be conquered again and carried further beyond.”
