VELKOMMEN / WELCOMES
Som nævnt fylder speedway 100 år her i 2023.
Jacob Olsen
CEO Vojens Speedway Center
For the 31st time, Denmark has hosted an SGP since the FIM introduced a series of races in 1995, replacing the classic one-night finals that began in 1936.
With hosting events in Vojens, Parken and Horsens, Danish speedway has shown that our small country has an important role in the international speedway world.
We should be proud of that.
This year we also have SGP2 – the world decider for U21 – on the program in a terrific weekend, where the audience can enjoy world-class racing, and have great experiences in the large FanZone, which offers a multitude of activities.
Everything that happens this weekend could not be done without our fantastic sponsors and partners.
This applies in particular to Haderslev Municipality and Mayor Mads Skau, but - of course - also to the international motorcycle union FIM and Discovery Events, which both work on a daily basis to develop and improve two-wheeled motorsport throughout the world.
Denmark’s Motor Union also fights to improve the conditions for both the general public and the elite, and has done so since 1914. It calls for special respect that DMU was established nine years before speedway sport was invented in Australia in 1923.
WE were all very deeply affected when DMU chairman Jørgen Bitsch passed away at the beginning of August, at a much too early age. Jørgen would have been here this weekend and enjoyed the atmosphere and the special atmosphere when the world’s best riders visit Denmark.
A big and warm thank you must also go to our two title sponsors, Jørgen Hansen Cars A/S and DeluxeHomeart, both of whom have an absolutely decisive role in order for us to be able to gather for this celebration of our beloved speedway sport.
Our staff at Speed1Way and the members around Vojens Speedway Klub also put in a lot of effort, for which I am very grateful.
As mentioned, the speedway turns 100 years old here in 2023.
It is marked in different ways in many countries, and many are wondering how we can ensure that the sport of speedway still exists in 2123.
It requires visions and new thinking, because the backbone of the sport is living people, such as riders, volunteer leaders, officials, press, and all the voluntary employees, who work so hard to create interesting and worthwhile events.
Motorsport is definitely not just for boys and men, and in an article in this magazine, you can read about women in Danish motorsport. There are more women in sport than you might think, and there is room for more.
Motorsport contains many exciting features, where gender and age have no significance.
A warm welcome, everyone - and have a great weekend.
With loving speedway greetings
Jacob Olsen CEO Vojens Speedway CenterWELCOME
Celebrating one-hundred years since the birth of the sport, the FIM Speedway Grand Prix World Championship will burst into life in 2023 with ten rounds staged in ten different cities across eight countries.
In its second year of a ten-year agreement, the promoter Discovery Sports Events has organised an action-packed schedule that does full justice to the sport as we mark the historic centenary of Speedway, a highly specialised discipline that inspires so much passion among its followers.
An incredibly exciting sport, Speedway is short, sharp and spectacular with powerful engines and no brakes calling for courage and commitment in equal measure.
With his three overall wins and four additional podium finishes, Bartosz Zmarzlik was the rider to beat last year as he raced to his third FIM Speedway Grand Prix World Championship title and the fast-paced Polish rider will be looking to seize an early advantage when the series once again gets under way at Donji Kraljevec in Croatia at the end of April.
Just two weeks later the series will pay the first of three visits this season to Poland with round two in Warsaw before a date in the Czech Republic’s capital city Prague at the start of June.
From here the action moves to Teterow in Germany one week later and then towards the end of the month the fifteen regular riders plus a wild card will return to Poland
where the halfway point of the season will be reached in Gorzow.
Following a three-week break, the next date is Malilla in Sweden before the focus switches to a scheduled stop in Latvia’s capital city Riga in mid-August.
With the championship coming to a climax, three rounds in four weeks will provide a fitting finale with the final destination of the title being fought out in September in Cardiff in Great Britain, Vojens in Denmark and Torun in Poland during an intense month of racing.
The FIM Speedway Under 21 World Championship (SGP2) will be decided the day before the SGP rounds in Prague, Gorzow and Vojens and the FIM Team Speedway Under 21 World Championship (SON2) final is scheduled for the day before the SGP round in Riga.
The FIM Speedway Youth World Championship (SGP3) final will take place on 14 July in Malilla, followed by a special SGP4 test event aimed at eleven to thirteen-year-olds which has been specifically designed to nurture young talent.
We wish to our series promoter Discovery Sports Events, all competitors, local organisers, national federations, FIM officials, teams, sponsors, media and, of course, the passionate fans who are the lifeblood of the sport, a safe and successful season of exciting racing. Do not forget to keep up to date with all the latest news at www. fimspeedway.com.

WELCOME
Welcome to the 2023 DeluxeHomeart FIM Speedway GP of Denmark – Vojens and the Jørgen Hansen Biler FIM SGP2 of Denmark. Thank you for being part of an historic year for our sport as speedway celebrates 100 years of racing.
Since the very first speedway meeting in Maitland, Australia in 1923, speedway has established itself as one of the best motorcycle shows on track. We look forward to celebrating a century of epic action as we honour the legendary riders and moments that have shaped the sport we enjoy today. As well as reflecting on the sport’s past, Warner Bros. Discovery Sports is working hard alongside our partners at the FIM to deliver a successful and exciting future for FIM Speedway. We will continue our quest to raise FIM Speedway to the next level while protecting the beauty and integrity of the sport.
For the first time in the sport’s history last year, every FIM Speedway World Championship was organised under a single promotional umbrella from grassroots to Speedway GP level. The FIM Speedway Under-21 World Championship was successfully relaunched as SGP2. Meanwhile the FIM Speedway Youth World Championship became SGP3.
Our quest to develop a new generation of stars continues this year as the FIM Speedway Youth World Cup (SGP4) –took place for the very first time in Malilla, Sweden on July 15. Alongside FIM Speedway global ambassador Tony Rickardsson, our vision was to create an entry-level championship with affordable bikes for our youngest riders to take their first steps towards Speedway GP. We would love to see one of our SGP4 champions go on to lift the Speedway GP trophy one day, as these young talents take their first steps on to the shale.
As well as our centenary celebrations, 2023 marked the much-anticipated return of the Monster Energy FIM Speedway World Cup in Wroclaw from July 25-29. The racing did not disappoint as we witnessed a Final for the ages,
with hosts Poland beating Great Britain to the gold medals on the last lap of a dramatic last-heat decider, which saw Denmark win bronze.
On Saturday night, the Danes will be going for the top step on the podium and, after seeing a great crowd turn out to support Leon Madsen, Mikkel Michelsen, Anders Thomsen and Rasmus Jensen in 2022, I am sure the home heroes will have plenty of backing once again. Danish young gun Emil Breum goes into Friday’s SGP2 event chasing a podium finish in the FIM Speedway Under-21 World Championship, with Esben Hjerrild, Nicolai Heiselberg and wild card Jesper Knudsen also representing the host nation.
The team at Vojens Speedway Center is vastly experienced when it comes to delivering big events, and that experience was put to the ultimate test when they were tasked with delivering the 2022 FIM Speedway of Nations at just two weeks’ notice following the promoter in Esbjerg’s withdrawal as host. Jacob Olsen and his great team richly deserved our 2022 FIM Speedway Local Organiser of the Year prize for this alone. The fact they also staged a superb FIM Danish Speedway GP less than two months later further underlined why we are so confident they will deliver another fine event this weekend.
Last year’s Speedway GP drew a fantastic crowd to one of world speedway’s most historic venues, and we will see more history written here on Friday when we crown the 2023 FIM Speedway Under-21 world champion in the SGP2 event. It’s also possible that we will see our Speedway GP world champion confirmed on Saturday.
Get ready for another unforgettable event in Vojens! Thank you for joining us and I wish you a fantastic weekend.

LEON MADSEN
MADSEN MAKES HIMSELF AT HOME
Danish hero Leon Madsen jumped at the chance to get some extra track time at Vojens Speedway Center ahead of Saturday’s Speedway GP. PAUL BURBIDGE caught up with a rider seeking a dream home win.
WORLD NO.2 Leon Madsen was so determined to give himself the best chance of a big result in this weekend’s DeluxeHomeart FIM Speedway GP of Denmark – Vojens that he opted for some extra track time here.
There can be no better practice than racing and when his Speedway GP rival Anders Thomsen was sidelined by a broken hand, Madsen wasted no time in signing for Vojens club Sønderjylland Elite Speedway for the climax of the Danish Speedwayligaen season.
Madsen made his club debut at home to Slangerup on August 23, scoring 15 points from six rides. He added 13 paid 14 points when his side visited Esbjerg on August 30, with Vojens Speedway Center now set to stage the Speedwayligaen Super Final on September 20 after reigning champions SES finished top of the table.
It isn’t just the team benefitting from the Czestochowa rider’s Danish league comeback, though, and Madsen hopes the extra track time at Vojens will bring him into his home Speedway GP in fine form.
“I got the opportunity to race a little bit in Vojens before the GP and it has been good practice for me,” he said. “I had a good meeting there last month and I am happy to be back in Denmark and racing in front of my home fans.
“Everything is really professional at Vojens. They are doing very well in the league. It has been a good experience with them, and now I am looking forward to racing the Super Final in Vojens. Hopefully I can be part of helping the team win another gold medal.”
Madsen is no stranger to winning top honours at Vojens. He lifted the inaugural 80cc FIM Youth Gold Trophy at the famous venue as a youth rider in 2001 and his career regularly brings him back to Denmark’s national speedway stadium.
“I used to race at Vojens a lot,” he said. “Especially at a young age when I was racing in the 50cc and 80cc classes. I have hung around there a lot and I have had some good memories and experiences there.
“I won the FIM Youth Gold Trophy on the small track. I have always felt very welcome there. Now I am just looking forward to racing the Speedway GP and the league final there over the next week.”
Madsen heads into Denmark’s biggest speedway event on Saturday with one goal in mind. “I haven’t won a Danish GP yet,” he said. “It would be a great experience to do that, especially at Vojens. I will do my very best to give that experience to all the fans who come and support me.
“To be honest, the reason I took the opportunity to race for SES … part of it was to prepare myself better for the GP.”
Madsen’s hopes of a Speedway GP World Championship medal suffered a major setback at the FIM Speedway GP of Great Britain – Cardiff on September 2. Despite winning the 2019 event at Principality Stadium and finishing fourth in 2022, Madsen managed just two championship points this time around.
He arrives in Vojens placed eighth in the standings on 75 points – 30 short of third-placed Slovak star Martin Vaculik and 11 adrift of Great Britain racer Dan Bewley, who holds the sixth and final automatic qualifying position for 2024.
Closing a 30-point gap with just 40 points available over the final two rounds in Vojens and Torun on September 30 will be a tall order. But Madsen is determined to at least end on a high by securing his place in next season’s Speedway GP series.
“I still felt I had a chance to reach the top three ahead of Cardiff,” he said. “I was only 12 points behind before that round and I wanted to do everything I could to reach that goal.
“If that is out of reach, we can start talking about being in the top six. We only have two GPs left now, so it’s all or nothing. We cannot afford to have a bad GP. Then it’s all gone. Hopefully I can at least get into the top six.”
Madsen won his second Speedway GP silver medal in 2022, but that hasn’t stopped him from working hard on his equipment to find that magical combination to help him challenge series leader Bartosz Zmarzlik in the months and years to come.
The Pole could seal his fourth Speedway GP World Championship here in Vojens on Saturday. But Madsen insists his work continues to find the speed and bike setup needed to challenge a rider who currently dominates the sport.
“I have been testing so much with the engines this year with my tuner Brian Karger,” Madsen said. “We have been trying different things. Some things have been going well on some tracks. But then you arrive on some different tracks and the engine doesn’t work on them.
“It has been a tough puzzle to figure out what to do with the engines on the different kinds of track. We have used the season to get better dialled in with this and I feel we are getting close to something very good.
“I’ve had very good results in the most recent meetings in the leagues in Poland and Denmark. That’s very positive. Hopefully we can keep that momentum and finish off the season well so that we can start next season with confidence in my equipment.”
A big night in Vojens would certainly add to that confidence as Madsen aims to end SGP 2023 on a high.

DELUXEHOMEART LYSER OVER VM SPEEDWAY
PASSION FOR SPEEDWAY
Af Ib SøbyDELUXEHOMEART LIGHTS UP THE SGP
The Kolding-based company DeLuxeHomeart is the title sponsor of this year’s Danish FIM Speedway Grand Prix. The company develops and distributes LED candles for retail worldwide. Behind DeLuxeHomeart is a family with a great passion for Speedway.
By Ib SøbySometimes a good idea comes out of thin air, almost like a random train of thoughts, like a kaleidoscope where the pieces suddenly fall into place. That’s how it was for Claus and Jette Poulsen when, about four years ago, they got the idea that they wanted to develop a better and more natural battery-powered candle, than everyone else.
- Our LED lights are extremely environmentally friendly and with a long burning time, unlike ordinary candles, and in this day and age, with a focus on sustainability and a green transition, we harmonize well with speedway, which in many respects is an environmentally friendly motorsport, says director Claus Poulsen from DeLuxeHomeart.
However, it is a special passion for speedway sport that has led to DeLuxeHomeart supporting both SES-Sønderjylland Elite Speedway, and now also the Danish WC Grand Prix.
PASSION FOR SPEEDWAY
- My wife Jette comes from Hans Nielsens town of Brovst in North Jutland, and when we met 23 years ago, we were both very intere -
sted in speedway. At this time, we are impressed by the work that Jacob Olsen and the staff at Vojens Speedway Center do to promote Danish speedway, and we would like to support that.
The Poulsen family are now regular guests when there is a speedway event in Vojens.
Claus and Jette Poulsen have been working with applied art and home accessories for a number of years, but in February 2020 they were able to present the new lifelike LED candle, which with resin at the top creates a wet look that resembles liquid candles.
- It took time and many trials before we hit on the right model. At the same time, we were under extreme time pressure because we had registered for a large exhibition in Germany, recalls Claus Poulsen
- We now have a global patent, and have obviously hit a good time, because the interest and growth in our company is almost explosive, says Claus Poulsen, and explains that DeLuxeHomeart distributes over 5 million LED candles annually.

bliver tv transmitteret i 70 lande.
WHY BUY A KIA IN SKAERBEK
When this year’s U21 speedway world champion is to be crowned at Vojens Speedway Center, Jørgen Hansen Cars A/S in Skearbek is the title sponsor for the event, which is televised in 70 countries.
By Ib SøbyIt is not because Jørgen Hansen dreams of new customers from exotic countries who will make a pilgrimage to Skaerbæk to buy a new KIA.
- No, it probably won’t happen, but we would like to maintain and expand our position as a sponsor and business partner, in order to help ensure a good and sensible development of Danish speedway, says Jørgen Hansen, who is already one of the team’s the sponsors for SES – Sønderjylland Elite Speedway.
- We support both individual athletes and several teams in our local area. But we only do it, if we can feel a distinct willingness to work hard and train the extra that is needed to achieve success, says Jørgen Hansen.
- One have to think in long-term, and if we give the young riders a good environment, with an appropriate dose of support and expectations, I believe in a new era, where Danish speedway will once again find a place in the consciousness of the Danes, and get more publicity in the media, than what we are experiencing these years, Jørgen Hansen believes.
A MODERN CARHOUSE
This philosophy fits very well with the way Jørgen Hansen runs his carhouse in Skaerbek. Based on the motto work smarter, not harder, the 57-year-old Kia dealer has streamlined his business and created a customer base that extends far beyond Tønder Municipality.
- I often think, why on earth people have to drive to Skaerbek to buy a car. My own answer has always been a striving to do something different, to do the little something, that is better than other car dealers, smiles Jørgen Hansen thoughtfully.
- We have an excellent service, good insurance offers, and have optimized everyday life with digital solutions. We have online booking from 05.00 to 21.00, automatic bookkeeping and a smart-pay system, which saves a lot of working hours and limits wasted time.
- It is a bit like when you check in yourself and book your seat on a plane.
Jørgen Hansen Cars A/S was the country’s leading Kia seller for four consecutive years from 2016 to 2019, before the corona pandemic pushed Danish society.
- We have stuck with Kia for around 17 years where, before we also sold Mazda and Suzuki, but now we would rather be good at one thing, than be half-good at ten things, says Jørgen Hansen from his office behind the exhibition.
This is where Jørgen Hansen has his daily life, most often with the dog Kia, who often wanders around with him, or gets a nap under the boss’s table.
SUPPORTS LOCAL INITIATIVES
Regarding marketing, Jørgen Hansen has set new standards with significant TV and radio campaigns, just as two employees follow up on social media.
- We don’t spend a lot of money on newspaper ads, but on the other hand we experience a great effect via TV, radio and social media, and feel that it is the best and most effective way to reach new customers, while at the same time, we do lot to keep our existing customers.
A few years ago, Jørgen Hansen was also one of the initiators of the now world-famous Marsk Tower near Skaerbek, and currently Hansen is participating in a private project regarding the installation of electric charging stands in Tønder, Toftlund and Skaerbek.
- It is one thing to ask, why people have to drive to Skaerbek to buy
MOTORSPORT AND HUNTING
Originally, Jørgen Hansen would have trained as a joiner, but he got the car industry in his mother’s milk because his father already established Peter Hansens Automobiles in Skaerbek in 1961.
- Well, then I was trained as a car mechanic at the - now defunctToyota in Brøns, and took over my father’s business in 1990.
At the same time, Jørgen Hansen has maintained a great interest in motorsport, and due to close family relations, he has followed speedway for a number of years.
- Right back from Tommy Knudsen’s time in the 1980s, speedway has filled a lot, but I also like to watch Formula 1, or go to car-races on Danish tracks such as nearby Padborg Park.
An early morning, before sun up, with Kia on the hunt can also give Jørgen Hansen peace of mind and inspiration, to wonder why people have to drive to Skaerbek to buy a Kia.

Zmarzlik was schooled at his local club Gorzow, racing with Polish great Tomasz Gollob in his early years.
But the pupil is now emerging as the master. Since joining the series full-time for 2016, Bartek has amassed an astonishing six FIM Speedway World Championship medals in seven years, winning gold in 2019, 2020 and 2022, silver in 2018 and 2021 and bronze in 2016.
He fell just three points short of becoming the first Speedway GP rider to win three straight world titles in 2021. Despite winning five Speedway GP rounds over a breathtaking season, he was pipped to the gold medal by Artem Laguta. But Zmarzlik got back on top of the rostrum in 2022 – sealing the sport’s biggest prize with a round to spare in Malilla, and he picked up where he left off with victory at the 2023 opening round in Croatia on April 29.

The Dane made a huge impact, topping the FIM Warsaw Speedway GP podium on his full-time series debut, before going on to win the FIM British Speedway GP in Cardiff and the FIM Torun Speedway GP on his way to World Championship silver that year.
Madsen won the Torun round with a seven-ride maximum, but fell just two points short of world champion Bartosz Zmarzlik.
While has not won a round since, he reached at least the semi-finals at every round in 2022 on his way to the silver medal. He will be determined to upgrade it to gold in 2023.

Just 12 months after Great Britain hero Robert Lambert ended his country’s 32year wait for a world team title at the 2021 FIM Speedway of Nations Final in Manchester, he became world No.5 in 2022.
Lambert’s 2020 Speedway European Championship win made him the first rider to qualify automatically for the FIM Speedway Grand Prix series by winning the continental championship.
He enjoyed a solid Speedway GP debut season in 2021, ending the year 10th. But he took things to another level in 2022, reaching his first podiums as he finished second in Vojens and third in Wroclaw.
He even came within four laps of a second straight FIM SON gold medal with Dan Bewley as Australia broke GB hearts in the Grand Final at Vojens.
But Lambert can be proud of securing automatic qualification for the first time, and second place at this year’s season opener in Croatia will help his chances of launching a medal challenge in 2023.

The big results kept on coming as he followed that up by finishing second in the FIM GP Challenge in Glasgow seven days later to book his place in the 2023 Speedway GP series, before winning the Betard FIM Wroclaw Speedway GP on his Polish home track.
Bewley ended his SGP debut season as world No.6. But he was not completely new to the world stage, having helped GB to FIM Speedway of Nations world-title gold in Manchester in October 2021.
With Tai Woffinden injured on day one of the Final, Bewley stepped up to partner Lambert on day two, culminating in their 5-4 Grand Final win over Poland as the Lions celebrated their first world team title since 1989.

Dudek made a massive impact in his full-time debut series in 2017, finishing second to Jason Doyle in an epic Speedway GP World Championship race, which went all the way to the final round in Melbourne.
That silver medal saw Dudek become the first rider in Speedway GP history to reach the top two in their debut season.
He was unable to return to the rostrum in 2022, finishing seventh in the standings. Dudek was only denied sixth spot by virtue of Dan Bewley’s two Speedway GP wins, but he will be keen to climb higher in 2023.

Every speedway fan knows Nicki Pedersen.
The Dane with the explosive temper, who for more than 20 years has fascinated with his hard and uncompromising style.
NICKI
The 46-year-old three-time world champion has always gone his own way, which made it a surprise to many when he was appointed Danish national coach.
Some doubted whether Nicki Pedersen would be up to the task, but with silver at both the team European Championship and Speedway of Nations 2 and bronze at the team World Cup, the results have been quite good.
’We have been on the podium every time, so it is satisfying. My focus has primarily been on breathing new life into the team spirit and getting our profiles to work together after a period where it has been a bit difficult.’
At the team World Cup, Nicki Pedersen became the first rider/national coach in history, but it almost caused more attention that the notoriously temperamental star managed to keep a cool head. Even when he felt that Denmark had hard luck with the referee.
’As national coach, I represent Denmark and the Danish Union. When I’m not riding myself, the heart rate is lower, and I have a different overview. I have had quite a few responses where people are surprised by my attitude’, he says.
’I know that the union liked what they saw. I wasn’t in doubt myself, but maybe they were. I think there is satisfaction with my efforts, and I am also happy and proud of myself.’
At the grand prix in Vojens, Nicki Pedersen gets a more withdrawn role.
’It has been a tough season for the Danes. It has not been optimal with the gear and the organization. but I can see that they all have fire in their bellies.’
’They know they can trust me and if I can contribute something, I will. Otherwise, I stay in the background. I am a sidekick to their teams, trying to give a different perspective.’
Fans can also look forward to a different perspective on Nicki Pedersen when he publishes a book about his life in the new year.
’They should expect a book that paints an honest picture of me, my career, and my personal life. Not only from my point of view, but also from some of the people who have been close to me through thick and thin.
’A Life without Brakes’ will be published on Peoples’ in early 2024.
DID YOU KNOW?
DID YOU KNOW?
Speedway GP was launched in 1995 – replacing FIM Speedway World Finals, which saw the world champion crowned on a single night.
The first Speedway GP event took place at Polish club Wroclaw on May 23, 1995 and it was won by Polish great Tomasz Gollob.
Rickardsson, Danish rider Nicki Pedersen and Polish hero Bartosz Zmarzlik are the only riders to have won back-to-back world titles during the Speedway GP era. Rickardsson did it twice – in 19981999 and in 2001-2002.
FACTS THE BIKES
Unlike in other motorcycle sports, speedway bikes have NO BRAKES – riders make their turns by power sliding through the corners.
Speedway bikes have 500cc engines and run on pure methanol – a clean-burning fuel which delivers breathtaking performance.
Bikes accelerate off the start line faster than a Formula 1 car!
Rear tyres could be used for as few as one or two races as teams seek that fresh edge to ensure ultimate grip off the start line. Some riders opt to use a new tyre for every heat – others use a rear tyre for two races, turning it after its first race to get a fresh edge.
Riders can bring as many bikes as they wish to a Speedway GP round – two are placed in the pits, with any others held in a standby area near the pits. Riders usually bring three bikes.
Every bike has one fixed gear, with teams able to change these sprockets between races in their search for speed.
Riders and their teams can make other adjustments to the bike including changing the ignition timing, switching the carburettor jet and moving the rear wheel back or forward in a bid to increase or reduce traction to suit track conditions.
Engine tuners also play a key role in boosting speed – servicing motors and ensuring they are fitted with parts that deliver high performance and can endure the extreme pressures they face in a speedway race.
Motors are also fitted with rev limiters to protect the engines and increase their service life.
SPOT THE DIFFERENCES!
These two pictures may seem identical but they are not! Can you spot all 7 differences ?

Qualifying practice offers riders an opportunity to secure first choice of starting number, which allows them to select the set of starting positions they feel will suit them best for that night’s Speedway GP event.
All 16 starting numbers ensure every rider starts from each of the four gates at least once. But they will start from one gate twice –and a big performance in qualifying practice hands them the best chance to ensure they have the right starting positions at the right
QUALIFYING PRACTICE RACING RULES
Four riders line up in each race, each wearing a different helmet colour – red, blue, white or yellow.
The rider in red starts on the inside in gate one, with blue starting from gate two, white on gate three and yellow lining up in gate four on the outside.
The countdown to a race begins when the FIM referee starts the two-minute clock. At the end of this two-minute deadline, riders must be at the tapes and ready to race – otherwise they face being disqualified.
Once the four riders have been lined up by the start marshal, the referee turns on the green light to put them under starter’s orders. The tapes will then be released by a randomised electronic system.
If riders touch the starting tapes, they are disqualified. If a
time. This can be a huge advantage later that day!
Riders will take to the track in groups of three and will have three blocks of two minutes clock the fastest flying laps they can. The rider who records the fastest lap over the session earns first choice of starting number for the evening’s Speedway GP event, with the second-placed rider choosing next and the rider ranked 16th selecting last.
rider is adjudged by the referee to have moved before the tapes lifted, they are handed an official warning. If they move or touch the tapes again during the same Speedway GP event, they are automatically disqualified.
When the tapes lift, an intense minute of action gets underway as four riders battle it out over four furious laps.
If a rider or riders fall, and the race is stopped, the FIM referee will disqualify the rider they deem to have caused the stoppage. If the incident occurs on the first turn, the referee has the option to invite all of the riders back for the restart if they believe no-one was at fault.
With 23 intense races in store, get ready for a dramatic night of Speedway GP action as the world’s top riders go wheelto-wheel!

Johnnie Hoskins blev født i Wiatara, New Zealand, i 1892.
Olympiske Lege i London i 1948.
JOHNNIE HOSKINS NARRATES:
The man who is considered to be the father of speedway, tells himself about the early start in Australia in December 1923.
Johnnie Hoskins was born in Wiatara, New Zealand, in 1892. He left school at 13 and worked on the farm. He was a restless soul, and decided to try his luck in Australia, where he, among other things, was a telegraph operator in Wagga Wagga before going to Sydney.
But he was not successful in the booming metropolis.
HEARTBREAK SENT ME TO WEST MAITLAND
I stood in George Street discreetly counting my last shillings and wondering why I had not accepted that partnership in a workshop in Wagga Wagga. Why hadn’t I married him the farmer’s young and wonderful sister, and taken over forty square kilometers of mature land near Tambo in central West Queensland. Why hadn’t I gone into the film business with Percy Weedon in Port Darwin.
Why, Why, Why.
”Well, but then it’s back to the bush again”, I thought.
I walked with my bag in hand to Central Station, determined to catch the first and best train out of Sydney.
I put my stack of coins in front of the hatch where sat a stunned salesman and said nonchalantly ”Give me a ticket as far as the money will go”
” Strike me pink, don’t you know where you want to go? he said surprised and with a questioning expression.
”I don’t know and I don’t care as long as I get as far away from Sydney as possible”
” What is wrong with Sydney. It is a nice city. But come on, here’s a ticket to West Maitland, and there’s even a little to spare.
I arrived at West Maitland late in the afternoon, roused a sleeping cabbie outside the station, and asked him in an authoritative voice to drive me to a suitable hotel.
And here they were, when fate intervened.
As an old colt of a horse trotted off, I suddenly caught sight of two old friends walking on the pavement, Percy Weedon and his partner from Darwin.
They paid for my cab and introduced me to the hotel manager, giving me a welcome like a long lost brother! They owned the local
cinema and soon I was doing events, fundraising shows, boxing and everything else, and with great success.
Then there was also an offer to become manager of the city’s stadium and the annual agricultural show.
I had just bought a motorcycle and suggested to the committee that we do motorcycle races in the stadium. That idea was promptly swept off the table, but I insisted. As a last resort, I just risked my job by inviting about twenty guys with their motorcycles for a test ride on the stadium’s horse track, early on a Sunday morning.
In midsummer 1923 - December in Europe - we held the first Electric Light Carnival with music, dancing and motorcycle racing, and it was a run-in.
Soon after we changed the name to ”Speedway” and ran races every week.
We had virtually no prize money. We had no insurance, no safety barrier, no speakers, and in terms of light, the full moon was the best floodlight in the evening.
The drivers mostly raced without helmets, gloves, goggles or suits. They got the flying slags right in the face. They rode with their sleeves rolled up and both feet on the foot rests, and the course was about five hundred meters.
They started at the sound of a starting gun, which is also known from athletics.
They took lights, fenders and brakes from their private motorcycles, and the luckiest of them collected their machines after the race and drove home. But those who were unlucky often had to sleep somewhere in the stadium and wait until sunrise, when they might be able to repair their motorcycles.
I organized two seasons in West Maitland, went to Newcastle and ran a big 8oo meter track in Hamilton.
Then I went to Perth with one pound in my pocket and organized the speedway and within a month I had made £1,000.
Maybe it was fate that sent me to England with Speedway. I came over with the first drivers in 1928.
The rest of the story you know, you old guys, and also you of today’s drivers, with all your talents and who live from the sport, in relation to the pioneers who created the rules, developed the motorcycles and laid the foundation for the WC finals, which are the most important event in the annual speedway calendar.
In England Johnnie Hoskins met the relatively young Arthur Elvin, who had adventurously created the Empire Pool, and then bought Wembley Stadium. Elvin had made his financial foundation on Greyhound Racing, but was also in love with speedway, so in 1929 he offered Hoskins to manage the Wembley Lions, which could draw around 60,000 spectators, weekly, to races in the Southern League.
And the rest is history.

SPEEDWAY HISTORY
A CENTURY OF SPEEDWAY
On December 15, 1923, motorcycle speedway was born in Maitland, Australia. One hundred years on, FIM Speedway will be celebrating the sport’s centenary season in style.
Throughout 2023, we will tell speedway’s story, honour the legends of our great sport and share priceless memories with our fans around the world as we look back at a century of racing …
IN THE BEGINNING
The first British league champions were the Wembley Lions in 1932, and while their venue was better known to football fans as the home of the England football team and the FA Cup Final, around 100,000 spectators regularly packed Wembley Stadium for speedway’s iconic World Finals.
WEMBLEY WAY
While the Speedway GP stars have competed for the sport’s biggest prize over a series, ranging from six to 12 rounds since 1995, the heroes of the 20th century battled it out over several regional qualifiers for the right to race in the World Final.
With no semi-finals or final, a World Final saw riders go wheel to wheel over 20 heats, with the top scorer crowned world champion. With only five rides to change their life, whoever got it right on the night secured their place in speedway legend.
Speedway was born at Maitland Showgrounds in New South Wales, set in Australia’s stunning Hunter Valley wine region – around two hours from Sydney and close to modern-day Aussie venue Kurri Kurri.
One of the earliest speedway bikes was a Harley Davidson Peashooter, and this is the machine riders raced before they exported their sport to Europe in the late 1920s.
Britain staged its very first speedway meeting at High Beech in Epping Forest, North London on February 19, 1928, with fans standing both inside and outside of the track to experience this new sport.
Clubs sprung up across the UK, including Manchester’s Belle Vue Aces, who have staged racing every year since 1928 – defying the Second World War and the Covid-19 pandemic to remain the world’s oldest continually operating speedway club.
The first FIM Speedway World Championship winner was crowned at Wembley in 1936, with Aussie racer Lionel van Praag lifting the trophy, closely followed by USA’s Jack Milne in 1937 and Australia’s Bluey Wilkinson in 1938.
The outbreak of the Second World War forced the cancellation of the 1939 World Final and while some speedway continued during the conflict, the World Championship didn’t resume until 1949, when England’s Tommy Price became his nation’s first world champion.
The 1950s saw new heroes emerge as Freddie Williams of Wales, Australia’s Jack Young and New Zealand’s Ronnie Moore won world title doubles, while Kiwi great Barry Briggs won the first of four gold medals –three of them achieved with 15-point maximums.
Sweden’s Ove Fundin was the star of the 1950s and 1960s, racing to five world titles and an astonishing 10 straight seasons in the world’s top three between 1956 and 1965 – a record matched only by Aussie great Jason Crump between 2001 and 2010.
As well as being Sweden’s first world champion, he led his country to victory in the first-ever FIM Speedway World Team Cup Final at Gothenburg’s Ullevi Stadium in 1960.
Fundin also joined forces with Torbjörn Harrysson to win the first FIM Speedway World Pairs event – the forerunner for today’s FIM Speedway of Nations – at German track Kempten in 1968.
The 1960s saw the World Final head to mainland Europe for the first time, with Swedish city Malmo staging the first title-decider away from Wembley, won by Fundin in 1961, with Gothenburg going on to host the event nine times.
MAUGER MOMENTS
Another great emerged in the late 1960s as New Zealand legend Ivan Mauger began his dominance of the sport, winning three straight world titles from 1968 to 1970, before adding another three in 1972, 1977 and 1979.
He remains the only rider in the sport’s history to win three world titles in a row, and his haul of six championships is unequalled in the pre-Speedway GP era, with only SGP legend Tony Rickardsson matching that figure.
Mauger’s third victory came in Poland’s first World Final in 1970, staged at Wroclaw’s Olympic Stadium – home of the 2023 FIM Speedway World Cup.
Chorzow’s Silesian Stadium hosted the first of four World Finals in 1973. That night saw Mauger finish second as Poland’s first-ever world champion Jerzy Szczakiel took his place in history.
THE RICKARDSSON YEARS
MODERN GREATS
As the sport approached the 21st century, one man was determined to take Speedway GP to the next level. Step up Tony Rickardsson. The Swedish maestro powered to back-to-back Speedway GP world titles in 1998 and 1999 and won another pair in 2001 and 2002 –collecting his fifth gold medal at Sydney’s Stadium Australia – the first time the series had ventured outside Europe.
The early 2000s saw huge change in the FIM Speedway world as BSI Speedway purchased the rights to promote the Speedway GP series from the FIM. The company was later purchased by IMG in the mid-2000s.
BSI Speedway relaunched the World Team Cup as the FIM Speedway World Cup, with Australia crowned the first winners of the now famous Ove Fundin Trophy at Wroclaw’s Olympic Stadium in 2001.
New champions emerged as Danish racer Nicki Pedersen stormed to a shock world title in 2003, charging from 12th in 2002 all the way to the top. That victory left Australia’s Jason Crump heartbroken as he finished second for the third straight season. Crump was not heartbroken for long, though. He celebrated wildly at Hamar’s Viking Ship Stadium in Norway as he turned silver into gold by lifting the 2004 Speedway GP world title. But Tony Rickardsson was back on top in 2005 as he delivered the crowning glory of his Speedway GP career. Winning an astonishing six Speedway GPs from nine rounds, the Swedish great powered to a record 196 championship points to match Mauger’s record tally of six world titles.
His breathtaking wall of death on the first turn of the 2005 FIM British Speedway GP final in Cardiff will go down as the most jaw-dropping moment of the SGP greatest season a rider has produced – so far.
Tony Rickardsson announced his retirement from racing midway through 2006, with Jason Crump and Nicki Pedersen sharing the top step for the next four years. Crump lifted title No.2 in 2006, before Pedersen dominated the sport in 2007 – matching Rickardsson’s record haul of 196 championship points, albeit from 11 rounds.
Nicki Pedersen retained the crown in 2008, with Crump back on top in 2009 – a season which included a glorious seven-ride maximum to win the FIM British Speedway GP in Cardiff.
One man who was always in the race for Speedway GP glory as the 21st century dawned was Polish icon Tomasz Gollob. After a storied career, which saw him lead his country with distinction, the all-action 39-year-old ended Poland’s 37-year wait for a speedway world champion, sealing gold at Italian track Terenzano and then picking up the trophy in home city Bydgoszcz.
SPEEDWAY HISTORY
THE MONSTER MEN
If Tomasz Gollob’s title triumph for Poland proved age is just a number, evergreen American icon Greg Hancock completely redefined what’s possible for a rider in the autumn of their career.
After a huge victory at the 2010 FIM Croatian Speedway GP in Donji Kraljevec, which completely transformed what was threatening to become a disastrous season, Hancock went into 2011 full of desire. And he rewrote the history books by becoming the oldest Speedway GP world champion, aged 41 – fittingly sealing the trophy in Croatia.
Hancock played a key role in the sport’s development away from the track through his partnership with Monster Energy. The energy drink manufacturer then became presentation sponsor of the Speedway GP series in 2012, as well as Monster Energy FIM Speedway World Cup title sponsor.
Monster Energy also sponsored several Speedway GP athletes. Aussie favourite Chris Holder was one of those riders and came out on top in an epic title race with Nicki Pedersen in 2012.
He was soon joined in the Monster Energy family by Tai Woffinden. The Great Britain hero famously re-joined the series after a two-season absence and defied bookmakers’ odds of 500/1 to be crowned Speedway GP world champion at only the second attempt in 2013.
As the next generation of superstars emerged, one of the legends was still proving the man to beat. Greg Hancock claimed title No.3 in 2014, before adding No.4 in 2016 after Tai Woffinden sealed his second in 2015.
Hancock’s fourth and final triumph came at the end of a 2016 season, which saw Aussie racer Jason Doyle win four Speedway GP rounds, before being denied a shot at the title when he crashed out of the penultimate round in Torun.
Doyle roared back into title contention in 2017, only to suffer a broken foot at a PGE Ekstraliga match in Torun. After hastily undergoing surgery, Speedway GP’s man
of steel raced just five days later at the FIM Danish Speedway GP in Horsens, finishing fourth to top the championship standings.
He then powered through the pain barrier for the next four months, sealing the sport’s ultimate prize with a glorious victory at the FIM Australian Speedway GP in Melbourne.
Tai Woffinden inked his name in British speedway folklore in 2018, becoming the nation’s first-ever triple world champion when he sealed the Speedway GP World Championship ahead of Polish star Bartosz Zmarzlik. That season nearly saw him complete a golden double as the FIM Speedway of Nations launched, with the sport’s world team championship transitioning from a four-team tournament to a pairs event to allow more countries to be able to compete for gold.
Despite winning the FIM SON Grand Final in Wroclaw, Woffinden had to settle for silver as Russian duo Artem Laguta and Emil Sayfutdinov sealed the decisive second and third places to earn their country’s first speedway world championship of any kind. They went on to lift the FIM SON trophy again in 2019 and 2020.

Her følger Jacob Olsens mindeord om Jørgen:
On Saturday 5 August, Jørgen Bitsch died in Copenhagen.
The long-time chairman of Denmark’s Motor Union was hospitalized after a crash on his motocross machine at a rally on Bornholm a fortnight earlier.
It was precisely with his background as a motocross driver that Jørgen Bitsch came in and got leading roles, both at Denmark’s Motor Union and the international Motor Union FIM.
In his active career, Jørgen Bitsch and Parmo Nielsen were the coun try’s best riders in pair-motocross. They won many Danish champi onships, international Grand Prix, and in 1988 were number 4 in the world.
In 2007, Jørgen Bitsch became chairman of the Danish Motor Union, and he was remembered by drivers and the audience at Vojens Speedway on Wednesday 9 August.
Here are Jacob Olsen’s memorial words for Jørgen:
It is very difficult to understand that Jørgen Bitsch is no longer with us.
My thoughts go first and foremost to the family who have suddenly lost a husband, a father and a grandfather.
But Jørgen’s passing also leaves the Danish and the international two-wheeled motorsport world with an unbearable loss.
In my eyes, Jørgen Bitsch was one of the greatest capacities that Denmark’s Motor Union has benefited from over the years.
His leadership and work for the development of motorcycling calls for the deepest respect and recognition.
Jørgen Bitsch was a conscientious person who was not afraid to make decisions. He also possessed the rare ability to understand and embrace the challenges of both the elite and the those who joined the sport for passion
As an active sportsman, Jørgen Bitsch himself came from a distinguished motocross career, but he has always been a strong advocate for development and safety in the other sports, which are gathered under the Danish Motor Union.
It has always been rewarding and constructive to meet, be at a meeting or talk on the phone with Jørgen, because he was always so committed and tireless in his work.
Jørgen Bitsch cannot be replaced, either as chairman of DMU, or as a family man and human being.

THE ZMARZLIK YEARS?
Poland’s golden generation were rapidly making their mark on the world stage, with the likes of Maciej Janowski, Patryk Dudek and Piotr Pawlicki all playing their part in back-to-back FIM Speedway World Cup wins in 2016 and 2017.
Bartosz Zmarzlik was very much part of this group, but following his Speedway GP debut in 2016, it was the Szczecin-born star who emerged as Poland’s new speedway icon.
After bagging a bronze medal in 2016 and silver in 2018, Bartek stormed to gold in the 2019 Speedway GP series, fighting off a huge challenge from Danish debutant Leon Madsen and Emil Sayfutdinov at the last round in Torun.
Zmarzlik then defied the Covid-19 pandemic of 2020, which badly disrupted the sport’s calendar and closed down racing in many countries, by winning an eight-round Speedway GP series staged over five weeks to become only the third SGP rider in the series’ history to retain the world title.
races. Despite registering 189 points – the fourth highest total in Speedway GP history – Laguta’s haul of 192 – the third best points tally – saw him become the first world champion from Russia. There was more heartbreak for Zmarzlik in the 2021 FIM SON, with Great Britain defying the loss of talisman Tai Woffinden to injury, as Robert Lambert and Dan Bewley won the Lions’ first world team title since 1989 with a 5-4 victory in the Manchester Grand Final. Artem Laguta’s 2021 joy was very short-lived when, along with Emil Sayfutdinov, he found himself suspended from the sport by the FIM due to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, leaving Bartosz Zmarzlik to lead Speedway GP into a new era.
