ZORAN PERISIC – NEW MAYOR OF NIS CITY The candidate from Serbian Progressive Party Zoran Perisic has been elected new Mayor of Nis City.

Mile Ilic from Serbian Socialist Party has been re-elected the president of Nis City Assembly. The deputy president will be Nenad Stankovic from United Regions of Serbia while Nis City Assembly Secretary General will be Ivan Nikolic from Serbian Socialist Party and his deputy will be Jelena Zaric from Serbian Progressive Party.

On the occasion of the election new Mayor of Nis City Zoran Perisic promised that he would do everything within his powers to improve the situation for the citizens of Nis. “I would like to continue all the good projects that were initiated. But first I need to get the insight into all that is expecting me. We are going to make quick review and we will see

which matters are the most urgent. We are having the first session of Nis City Council tomorrow and we are starting to work right away”, said newly elected Mayor Perisic. Nis City Assembly president Mile Ilic said that new authorities would have three priorities. “Further development of the economy, opening of new factories and new jobs, developing suburban parts of the city as well as rural areas”, said Ilic. During this constitutional session of Nis City Assembly Mayor Perisic said that the candidate

for deputy Mayor would not be presented. According to coalitional agreement the deputy Mayor should also come from Serbian progressive Party. Nis City Assembly members voted for the new members of Nis City Council. New City Government will be constituted from Serbian Progressive Party representatives Milos Bandjur, Srdjan Aleksic and Predrag Savic; United Region of Serbia representatives Mihajlo Zdravkovic, Milan Pesic and Nenad Gasevic; Serbian Socialist Party representatives Srdjan Vaskovića and Žarko Ranković;

Party of United Pensioners of Serbia representative Branislav Randjelović. Serbian Progressive Party, Serbian Socialist Party and United Regions of Serbia formed the majority in Nis City Parliament. Nis City Assembly consists of 61 members and out of that number 16 are from Serbian Progressive Party, 10 from Serbian Socialist Party, 10 from United Regions of Serbia, 4 from Serbian Democratic Part, 4 from Liberal Democratic Party and 15 from Democratic Party.

NEW NIS CITY MAYOR ZORAN PERISIC TAKES OVER THE OFFICE Newly elected Nis City Mayor Zoran Perisic has taken over the office from the former Mayor Milos Simonovic today. On this occasion, Mayor Perisic said that difficult task of responding to the challenges of the present time was awaiting new City Government. He pointed out that next four years would be the period of hard work. Mayor Perisic promised that he would dedicate all his efforts to this difficult job and that he was expecting the same from his associates. Milos Simonovic, former Nis City Mayor expressed his wishes for the success of the new Mayor and

New City Government in their service to the citizens of Nis. Democratic Party, which was in power for the last four years, would constitute the opposition in Nis City Parliament. After official handover, the first session of Nis City Council was held at Nis City Hall. The New Secretary General of the Council is Nadja Markovic, which used to be the Vice Mayor during the office of the former Mayor Simonovic.

At the second session of Nis City Council the Members of the Council were tasked officially with the area of expertise and jurisdictions. According to Mayor Perisic the division of responsibilities was done differently compared to previous practice. “We did not want to put any of the city administrations under direct control of one political party and we tried to task more than one city councilor with the activities of different city administrations. On the other hand some of the administrations are so big and several councilors have to supervise their work” Mayor Perisic said. For the following term of office the Mayor himself will be in charge of finance, local

self-government revenues and public procurements. Councilor Zarko Rankovic will be in charge for matters of responding to emergency situations, primary health care service and environment protection. Councilor Srdjan Vaskovic will supervise the planning and construction, real estate and work of the administration for citizens’ affairs. Councilor Mihajlo Zdravkovic will be in charge of economy, sustainable development and traffic. Councilor Milan Pesic will deal with the issue related to youth and sports. Councilor Nenad Gasevic will

be in charge of education, capital investment projects, IPA projects and project financed from the National Investment Plan. Councilor Srdjan Aleksic will deal with agriculture, rural development and culture. Councilor Predrag Savic will supervise the work of the administration for construction and planning and property inspection while Councilor Milos Bandjur will be in charge of communal services, energetic and the cooperation with University. Councilor Branislav Randjelovic will be In charge of social care services and child’s welfare services.

AUDIENCE OF MAYOR PERISIC WITH JOVAN, BISHOP OF NIS His Holiness Bishop of Nis Jovan met with newly elected Mayor of Nis Zoran Perisic. This was the occasion for two officials to meet and discuss the matters of importance for the citizens of Nis. This meeting represents the first formal meeting between the Mayor Perisic and Bishop Jovan.

WELCOMING PARTICIPANTS OF 5TH INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS’ FOLK DANCE FESTIVAL Nis City Mayor Zoran Perisic organized the reception at Nis City Hall for the organizers and participants of the 5th International Students’ Falk Dance Festival which has been traditionally organized by Students’ Culture Center.

This year festival gathered folk dance groups from Bulgaria, Italy, Canada, Indonesia, Mexico, Romania, Macedonia, Turkey and Serbia. On this occasion Mayor Perisic said that the organization of the festival was excellent and he reminded the participants that, next year, the City of Nis would be the host of the European Festival of the Folk Dances which would gather folk dance groups from Serbian Diaspora all over the world and he invited all

the participants to join this event next year. The director of Students’ Culture Center Miroslav Jovic thanked Mayor Perisic for the warm welcome and the support from the city and he promised that SCC would continue to be active in the organization of the cultural events and the promotion of our city. Mayor Perisic presented the coins with the portrait of Constantine the Great to the participants of

the festival with the wish that this symbolic gift would always remind them of the time spent in Nis. Mayor Perisic presented the first edition of Nis City Lexicon to the organizers of the Festival with the promise that he would personally lobby for including the Students’ Culture Center as a part of the future issues of this modern lexicography which represented Nis as modern city on one side and it gave historical genesis on the other side.

MAYOR PERISIC MET WITH REPUBLIC OF BULGARIA GENERAL CONSUL IN NIS Nis City Mayor Zoran Perisic met with Republic of Bulgaria General Consul in Nis H.E. Mr. Atanas Krstin and Consul H.E. Mrs. Antonia Veleva. General Consul Krstin presented to Mayor Perisic the work of General Consulate in Nis as well as the personal efforts of the Consul himself to extend the cooperation between our two nations. On this occasion Mayor Perisic expressed his wish to preserve the cooperation and to intensify it in all possible fields in the following period. He proposed the exchange of the projects in the areas of culture, sport and economy. He also proposed the meeting of the entrepreneurs from Serbia and Bulgaria. Mayor Perisic also

pointed out that the City of Nis will continue to be the good example of the best practices in the field of respecting the rights of minority since it is the one of the basic preconditions if we want to be the part of European society. General Consul offered to transfer the experience of Bulgaria in the process of obtaining EU membership as well as a great number of already prepared projects which the City of Sofia is ready to give to the City of Nis.

VISIT BY FRENCH AMBASSADOR The Ambassador of France in Serbia H.E. Mr. Fransois Xavier Deniau, with his associates visited newly-elected Nis City Mayor Zoran Perisic. Ambassador Deniau explained that the reason for this visit was the fact that French Embassy has had a very intensive and successful cooperation with the City of Nis and that the visit was an ideal opportunity to meet new Mayor and discuss with him the future cooperation. Ambassador Deniau announced that one of the biggest future projects was going to be the opening of the Department for French Language at University of Nis Faculty of Philosophy. Mayor Perisic thanked the Ambassador for the cooperation which was especially successful in the area of culture and education

and suggested that more time and attention should be devoted to cooperation in the field of economy to the mutual benefit of the citizens of Nis and French entrepreneurs and companies. Mayor used this opportunity to invite the Ambassador Deniau to the celebration of the 1700th anniversary of Milan of Edict signing which would be organized by Nis City next year. Ambassador Deniau also visited the French company Vossloh Cogifer which bought local company MIN SKRETNICE in 2003. According to Ambassador Deniau, the experience of the companies

already working in Nis would be the best recommendation in any future negotiations with potential investors. This visit was also the good opportunity for newly elected member of Nis City Council Mihajlo Zdravkovic, in charge of the economy and sustainable development, and Economic Councilor at French Embassy Mr. Olivier Remond to exchange the views on past and future projects.

MAYOR PERISIC MET WITH CRAFTSMEN FROM THE REGION Nis City Mayor Zoran Perisic and Nis City Council Member Mihajlo Zdravkovic in charge of economy affairs met with the representatives from the Chambers of Craftsmen from the region who were visiting Nis upon the invitation from the Nis Chamber of Craftsmen and Association of Entrepreneurs and Craftsmen.

This visit was dedicated to strengthening of the connections between professional associations and establishing direct cooperation between craftsmen in the region in order to exchange experience and expand common markets. This meeting was a good opportunity for the presentation of the current projects implemented by Nis Chamber of Craftsmen and for discussing the possibilities of improving the cooperation between the City of Nis and Chamber. The president of Nis Chamber of Commerce Blagoje Stanisavljevic pointed out that the Chamber was celebrating 220th anniversary of its existence and promotion of traditional crafts this year. The Association of Entrepreneurs and Craftsmen gathers about 5000 small craftsmen shop and about 10.000 small and medium sized enterprises. Craftsmanship has always been an important part of the Nis City economy in the past as well as in the present. For many years the national authorities did not pay

enough attention to craftsmen and such relation caused the dying out of old crafts and less number of young people deciding to choose crafts to make their living. On this occasion Mayor Perisic appealed for the cooperation between Chamber of Craftsmen and the City of Nis so that the survival and revitalization of the old crafts can be secured as well as the products of craftsmanship and that the economic position for the craftsmen can be improved and thus motivate young people to be trained in crafts and thus make their living. Mayor Perisic also invited the craftsmen from Nis to take active part I marking the celebration of 17 century since the Edict of Milan signing by organizing the exhibition of their fine craftsmanship. Councilor Zdravkovic expressed his hopes that the cooperation between the business community and city authorities would be intensified in the realization of the initiatives for common project coming from business community.

MAYOR ASSISTED IN SOLVING WATER PROBLEM FOR ROMA PEOPLE In relation to public appeal of Non Governmental Organizations to solve the problem of Roma people evicted from Belville settlement in Belgrade and located in the warehouse in Daniciceva street in Niš, who did not have safe running water, the Mayor of Niš, Zoran Perišić said that he immediately contacted institutions in charge and arranged with the Director of PUC “Naissus” Aleksandar Mitić for the Roma people housed in the warehouse near old factory Vulkan to get running water immediately.

The Naissus team connected this location to water supply network the next day and thus, after three months of waiting, the safe running water was made available for the Roma families living in these temporary accommodations.

RECEPTION FOR GOLDEN VOLLEYBALL TEAM AT NIS CITY HALL Nis City Mayor Zoran Perisic welcomed the Nis University Volleyball team which won the gold medal at 1st European Universities Games held in Cordoba Spain. Mayor Perisic congratulated the players and management team on the achieved success and pointed out that this gold medal represented the big success for university sports in Nis. “I am very glad that my first task regarding the sports in our city is to welcome European champions here at Nis City Hall. In my capacity as the Mayor I will do everything in my power to make sports more

appealing for the young people in Nis. I salute these young men who wore proudly our national colours” said Mayor Perisic. He also announced that analysis of the financing of sports club in Nis will be done in order to get better insight into the current situation and provide better support to successful clubs and individual sportsmen and sportswomen from our city.

SERBIAN OLYMPIC TEAM MEMBER FROM NIS AT NIS CITY HALL BEFORE GOING TO LONDON Nis City Mayor Zoran Persic met with Nenad Filipovic, the member of Serbian Olympic Team from Nis, before his official departure for London. Nenad Filipovic will compete in the discipline of race walking at the distance of 50 km. On this occasion Mayor Perisic pointed out the importance of sports for the formation of young people’s character. The City of Nis will support young sportsmen on their way to success and it will invest in creation of better infrastructure for different sports.

The Mayor gave to Nenad Filipovic the coin with the portrait of Constantine the Great with the wish that this small gift could be his lucky charm and could bring him good luck in the oncoming competitions. The member of Serbian Olympic Team member from Nis Nenad Filipovic thanked the Mayor for the warm welcome and promised that he would try to represent his city and country in the best possible way.
