Growing Kings announced the launch of the organizations 5th Annual 100 Mentors in 100 Days recruitment campaign. The average young man in a juvenile correctional facility spends over 1650 hours in detainment, only to be released to fewer opportunities and more obstacles. Imagine that young man spending those same hours in a positive environment surrounded by people who care about what he can become. All mentors will be expected to complete an orientation training prior to their engagement with students. Additionally, mentors are invited to meet for bi-monthly meetings that are entirely discussion-based. During these times, mentors are encouraged to share their experiences in order to learn and support one another.

Participants are asked to dress in a plain white TShirt, athletic shorts, and tennis shoes and should arrive at 8:30 a.m. for sign in. Parents are welcome to stick around throughout the remainder of the class. The academy is open to 100 total participants. To sign up visit: https://form.jotform.us/DNEVERS/ birmingham-fire-and-rescue-service-

Through this program, mentors are trained to implement classroom -based enrichment, as well as individualized instruction within a structured environment. To learn more or sign up visit: www.growingkings.org/mentor.

Keep Your Child on the Right Track Summer is here! But along with warmer weather, trips to the pool and the Fourth of July, comes a not-so-fun reality... the summer slide. Many children, especially struggling readers, forget some of what they've learned or slip out of practice during the summer months. Try these strategies to help your reader improve her reading during the summer and beyond: 1. Six books to summer success: Research shows that reading just six books during the summer may keep a struggling reader from regressing. 2. Read something every day: Encourage your child to take advantage of every opportunity to read. Find them throughout the day:

Morning: The newspaper — even if it is

just the comics or today's weather.

Daytime: Schedules, TV guides, magazines, online resources, etc. For example, if your daughter likes the food channel, help her look for a recipe on the network's Web site — then cook it together for more reading practice. Evening: End the day by having your child read to you from the book he is currently reading (one of the six books, above). Have him rehearse a paragraph, page, or chapter before reading to you. Rereading will help him be more fluent — able to read at an appropriate speed, correctly, and with nice expression. 3. Keep reading aloud: Reading aloud benefits all children and teens, especially those who struggle.
