❖ Different Types of Dyes and Structures

• Dyes can be classified in different manners; based on application class, chemical constitution, end usage and so on. • The blog discusses different types of dyes and their structures.

❖ Types and structures of different dyes

1. Acidic dyes

• • • • •

Class: They are anionic compounds soluble in water. Suitable fabric: Wool, Nylon Application method: Beck, exhaust, continuous Color Fixation in percentage: 80 to 93 percent Pollutants associated with the dye: Color, unfixed dye, organic acids

2. Basic dyes

• Class: They are soluble in water. Found in bright colors. Applied in a weak acidic dyebath. • Suitable fabric: Wool, Nylon • Application method: Beck, exhaust • Color Fixation in percentage: 97 to 98 percent • Pollutants associated with the dye: Color, unfixed dye, organic acids

3. Direct dyes

• Class: They are anionic compounds soluble in water. They can be applied to cellulosics directly without using any mordant or metals, e.g., copper or chromium • Suitable fabric: Cotton, Rayon, Other cellulosics • Application method: Beck, exhaust, continuous • Color Fixation in percentage: 70 to 95 percent • Pollutants associated with the dye: Color, unfixed dye, salt, surfactants, diluents, finish, cationic fixing agents, retarding and levelling agents

4. Disperse dyes

• • • • •

Class: They are not soluble in water. Suitable fabric: Polyester, acetate, other synthetic fibers Application method: High temperature, exhaust, continuous Color Fixation in percentage: 80 to 92 percent Pollutants associated with the dye: Color, carriers, organic acids, levelling agents, defoamers, phosphates, dispersant, delustrants, lubricants

5. Reactive dyes

• Class: They are anionic compounds soluble in water. The largest class of dyes. • Suitable fabric: Cotton, wool, other cellulosics • Application method: Beck, exhaust, continuous, cold pad batch • Color Fixation in percentage: 80 to 92 percent • Pollutants associated with the dye: Color, unfixed dyes, salt, alkali, defoamer, surfactant, finish, diluent

6. Sulfur dyes

• Class: They are organic compounds that contain sodium sulfide or sodium • Suitable fabric: Cotton, other cellulosics • Application method: Continuous • Color Fixation in percentage: 60 to 70 percent • Pollutants associated with the dye: Color, alkali, reducing agent, oxidizing agent, unfixed dyes

7. Vat dyes

• Class: They are the oldest dyes. Not soluble in water. Complex chemical structure. • Suitable fabric: Cotton, other cellulosics • Application method: Continuous, package, exhaust • Color Fixation in percentage: 80 to 95 percent • Pollutants associated with the dye: Color, alkali, reducing agent, oxidizing agent
