Hill-Kenan Society Recognizes Legacy of Giving D Benefac tor s Supp or t er s urham Academy has a legacy of families who have been exceedingly generous to the school. Over the years these alumni, parents and friends have led the way as Durham Academy has added new buildings, updated facilities, grown the endowment to support faculty and financial aid and sustained a robust annual giving program.

In May 1996, the board of trustees approved the establishment of a recognition society to honor those who have so generously supported the school through their time, their vision and their resources. Membership is based on gifts (not pledges) to Durham Academy and The Hill Center prior to June 30, 2005. After that date, gifts are recognized solely to Durham Academy since The Hill Center established its own society to recognize its donors in October 2004. The Hill-Kenan Society, the school’s highest recognition society, is named for the school’s only lifetime trustees, George Watts Hill and Frank Hawkins Kenan, both now deceased, whose leadership, dedication and vision ensured Durham Academy’s strong tradition of academic excellence. Their enduring commitment is an inspiration and a challenge to all who benefit from their dreams and generosity.

Durham Academy Endowment T Description of Funds hroughout Durham Academy’s history, alumni, parents and friends have established named endowment funds to provide lasting support for scholarships, faculty development and academics. It is the Durham Academy Board of Trustees’ policy that unrestricted, named endowment funds may be established with a gift of $25,000 or more and restricted, named endowment funds may be established with a gift of $100,000 or more.

The Durham Academy endowment portfolio is managed by Eton Advisors under the direction of the finance committee of the board of trustees. Eton also monitors the quasi-endowment portfolio managed by SunTrust Bank. Between two and four-and-one-half percent of the previous 12 quarter rolling average of the endowment fund is spent each year in support of the operating fund. The spending rate is determined by calculating the real dollar return of the portfolio less inflation.

Sheppy Vann retired at the end of the 20132014 school year, and to honor her legacy, DA established a need-based scholarship fund to help make the Preschool accessible to a wider range of students. 14th Annual DA Golf Tournament A $1,000 - $3,500 $300 - $499 fter four consecutive days of flash floods warnings and tornado watches, Durham Academy lucked out with picture postcard weather on May 1. There was a great turnout, with 52 players, including seven alumni and one head of school who somehow managed not to injure anyone with hooking drives. This year’s event raised more than $23,000 for the Durham Academy Fund, the school’s top fundraising priority. We are grateful to the DA families and friends who supported the tournament through tee sponsorships, faculty sponsorships, player fees, mulligan purchases and donations.

D

urham Academy’s Board of Trustees serve as stewards of the school who hold in trust its mission and reputation. As such, trustees accept the obligation to not only preserve but also to advance the institution. Their work begins with the fiduciary expectations of duty (due diligence on financials), care (executing decisions by prudent standards) and obedience (to laws and bylaws). Beyond these duties, trustees focus on policies and strategies that are future-focused, working in partnership with the head of school who oversees daily operations. The board utilizes its committees to study and assess the needs, activities and performance of the school and to make recommendations when planning, developing and establishing policy.
