Today is the best day of my life because I had the darshan of a saint. All my sins and sorrows vanished when I saw the saint’s feet. The fruits of my good actions came to me all at once when I met this saint. All my accumulated karmas turned into merits when I simply gazed at the feet of this saint.

O beloved daughter of the mountain who brings about great joy on earth, the one who brings joy to the whole universe, I bow to you. You dwell on the peaks of the great Vindhya Mountains, with radiance reaching far and wide. Shri Vishnu is filled with joy when he meditates on you. Oh great creatrix of the universe, the wife of Lord Shiva, for you the whole universe is your family. You are the doer of the great actions that give self realization. Victory to you who killed the demon, the one with the beautiful luminous face. 2. On the gods you shower auspicious blessings, you defeat the undisciplined, you tolerate the ignorant, you are ever rejoicing. You are the sustainer of the three worlds, the one who is the ultimate joy of Shankara. You destroy all of our sins by giving us self-realization. You inhabit the sound of Om. Your wrath befalls the progeny of the demons. You destroy those drunk on the evil intoxicant of pride. You are Daughter of the Ocean! Victory to you who killed the demon, the one with the beautiful luminous face. 8. You deck your tender limbs with fine dancing ornaments at the moment of battle, as you ready your bow, You slay the enemy of the ego with your shining sword and arrows from your golden-brown quiver. You play with the vast enemy forces arrayed on the battlefield as if they were screaming toy soldiers. Victory to you who killed the demon, the one with the beautiful luminous face. 16. Who surpasses the thousand-rayed sun with the brilliance of Her own thousand hands, and who is in turn praised by a thousand suns, Who does battle to save the Gods, and Whose sons fought the demon Taraka and are Saviors. Sura = divine being, Samaadhi = one pointedness, union “equal mind, a state beyond expression and thought, Samaana = to breathe equally, a vital air that controls digestion and assimilation. Victory to you who killed the demon, the one with the beautiful luminous face. --- adapted from the Mahishasuramardini Stotram, in the Devi Mahatmyam

Bhaja Govindam Chorus: Bhaja govindam bhaja govindam Govindam bhaja mudha-mate Worship the truth, Worship the truth, Worship the truth, O ignorant man! 1.

Dinam-api rajani saayam praatah shishira-vasantau punar-aayaatah; Kaalah kridati gacchaty-aayus tad-api na munchaty-aashaa-vaayuh.

Day and night, evening and morning, winter and spring come again and again! Time rolls on, life is spent, yet the wind of desire does not leave him. 7.

Baalas-taavat kridaa-saktas tarunas-taavat taruni-raktah; Vriddhas-taavach-chintaa-magnah tasmin brahmani ko’pi na lagnah.

In childhood, one is engaged in play; in youth, one is attached to a young woman; Iin old age, one is burdened with anxiety; but no one is ever concerned with the ultimate reality. 8.

Punar-api jananam punar-api maranam punar-api janani-jathare shayanam; Iha samsaare bahu-dustaare krpayaa’paare paahi muraare.

Born again, dying again, sleeping once again in a mother’s womb -- here in this endless ocean of worldly existence which is difficult to cross, protect me by your grace, O Lord. 10.

Vayasi gate kah kaama-vikaarah shushke nire kah kaasaarah; Nashte dravye kah parivaaro jnaate tattve kah samsaarah.

When youth is gone, where is passion? When the water dries up, can there be a lake? When wealth is lost, where are one’s relatives? When the truth is known, where is this world? 12.

Kas-tvam ko’ham kutah aayaatah kaa me janani ko me taatah; Iti paribhaavaya sarvam-asaaram vishvam tyaktvaa svapna-vichaaram.

Who are you? Who am I? Where have I come from? Who is my mother? Who is my father? In this way, think of everything as meaningless and renounce this world, knowing it to be just a dream. ---Shankaracharya

Ghunghata Ka Pata Khola Re Lift up the veil and meet your beloved! When it’s the Lord who dwells in every heart, why do you say such bitter things? Speak sweetly, and you will meet your beloved! Your money and your good looks make you proud! But when the masquerade is over, this costume you call your body will unravel into the elements again. A lamp is shining in the heart’s palace, and in its light the world becomes divine. Once you’ve found that lamp, don’t ever lose it! Wake up! Wake up! Explore the palace there within you! Go and meet your beloved! This love is the love no one sells or buys.

Kabir
