PHILIP SITHOLE HEAD: DURBAN TOURISM

Taking Durban to the world, and inviting the world to discover Durban WELCOME TO DURBAN!

Our vision is to open the treasure chest of Durban, so that tourists from across the globe may share in our rich diversity of cultural, historical, natural and infrastructural gems. Under the banner of a highly innovative visitor marketing strategy, Taking Durban to the World, we are forging excellent new partnerships and navigating some uncharted waters to help realize this dream. The city you see today is brimming with world-class attractions calling to be experienced.

The fun begins when you touch down at the King Shaka International Airport, which was recognized as the “Best Airport in the World Handling Under 5 million Passengers”, by Skytrax in 2015. Other world class attractions include uShaka Marine World and the Moses Mabhida Stadium, which continues to host top events, thereby attracting tourists in their droves, long after the 2010 Soccer World Cup. The Nkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre has also been a major drawcard in bringing high profile global events and conferences to the city, and was recently recognized by the World Travel Awards, for the 15th consecutive time, as Africa’s Leading Meetings and Conference Centre. Named as a highly recommended destination by CNN and the New York Times, Durban continues to rake in global awards and prestigious accolades.

Durban truly has it all: an enviable sub-tropical climate, the warm waters of the Indian Ocean, miles of golden beaches, vibrant industries, world-class facilities and friendly people. Built beside one of Africa’s busiest ports, and with the King Shaka International Airport a mere 30 minutes’ drive from the CBD, Durban is a hive of trade and commerce activity. But there is much more to the City than business. Named by the New York Times as one of the Top 10 cities to visit in 2015, Durban is far more than a port of call. It is a melting pot of cultural diversity, fascinating heritage, scenic beauty, large and small-scale events, outdoor adventure and world-class sporting facilities. It is a place that calls to be explored at length. Do enjoy your time in our city and we look forward to welcoming you back in the near future!

Durban’s golden beaches, washed by the warm Indian Ocean, are an idyllic summer playground. Have fun, but remember to exercise caution. Observe beach safety rules and cooperate with the lifeguards on duty. Lifesaving South Africa (LSA) trains more than 2000

lifeguards every year! In association with 80 affiliated clubs, the organisation maintains a presence throughout SA. LSA is a registered member of the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC) and the Department of of Sports and Recreation (SRSA). They are also long-standing members of the International Lifesaving Federation (ILS), Commonwealth Lifesaving and the Royal Lifesaving Society. Lifesaving SA’s core business however, is to provide a voluntary lifeguard service that benefits all communities and the country at large. They have around 5500 members who perform voluntary lifeguard duties operating at 50 coastal (Surf) clubs and some 30 inland (Stillwater) clubs across South Africa. Nippers - lifeguards of tomorrow A “Nipper” is a young member of the lifesaving movement who is between 8 and 14 years old. LSA’s Nippers are an important part of the organization, with clubs throughout SA offering training in surf and pool safety. On completion of the course, Nippers can progress to the Intermediate and Advanced levels. Once they have completed all three courses, at the age of 15 they can train to become a Junior Lifeguard. Once the member turns the age of 16, they commence training to achieve full Lifeguard status. LSA also has a long-standing relationship with the South African Police Services, providing Lifesaving training to SAPS members and is very active in developing lifesaving in the Wild Coast (former Transkei).

The current of social and economic injustices continues to suck children out into the depths of substance addiction, begging for bread and petty crime. It’s a mentorship programme that journeys with them as they transition from children to adults ensuring that they have the social skills and opportunities needed to move forward in life. THIS WAY! THE CHOICE IS YOURS. Bags packed. Check. Car fuelled. Check. Playlist loaded. Check. House sitter all set with the keys and a ‘how to’ guide for feeding the dogs, cats and goldfish. Check. Kids are piled into the back seat with their electronic devices fully charged. DOUBLE CHECK. And you’re good to go.

It’s an incredible, although unexpected, pleasure to road trip in and around South Africa, our beautiful KwaZulu-Natal province included. There is so much to see and experience. It’s the sort of thing that you can’t appreciate a few thousand miles up in the sky, by word of mouth or even in photographs. Rolling green hills, winding roads, landmarks, mountain ranges, game reserves, you name it, we’ve got it, and this summer you’re invited to enjoy it. Most ‘travellers’ both local and from other provinces will be pointing their cars in the direction of the sea this season, at which point, the ones that live there, pack their bags and head inland. But either way, there is no shortage of beauty on display, so we’d like to recommend you take the long way around and really soak it in. A slow meander through the province will show you many hidden gems and treasures and the good news is, whatever direction you choose… whether you follow the map or fall off the grid (accidentally or on purpose) there will be more than a few incredible SPAR stores lining the way to wherever it is you are going. Packed full of quality and convenience, we’ve got everything you’re looking for and more. Whether the kids are hungry, or you just want to stretch your legs. Whether you’re stocking up on food for the holiday, or just need takeout for the evening. Whether you’re feeling like a home cooked meal… without having to cook it yourself (you’re on holiday after all) or want to pick up some freshly baked cheese rolls from our bakery, SPAR have you covered. In fact, SPAR has KZN covered. So, we’d like to take this opportunity to invite you to enjoy our province and everything it has to offer. Including us. We promise, we’ll only add to the experience. Proof that for every kind of person (or need) there is every kind of SPAR.

Experience The Essence Of Ekasi TAKING TOWNSHIP TOURISM TO THE NEXT LEVEL, WITH PHILIP SITHOLE

The city of Durban has implemented a very active programme aimed at attracting tourists to explore local communities brimming with rich culture and history. The marketing team at Durban Tourism believes that an influx of tourists to these areas will not only empower communities by way of economic benefits, but will create a platform to share our fascinating cultural heritage globally. “Nelson Mandela cast the very first democratic vote in our first-ever democratic elections, in a suburb called Inanda. In this very suburb, Mahatma Gandhi developed his ideas of nonviolent resistance – philosophies now known across the globe. Such stories deserve to be shared with the world. Research indicates that tourists are now seeking experiences, as opposed to merely sight-seeing, making Township Tourism a perfect option” -Philip Sithole, Head: Durban Tourism.

Q | What is your vision for Township Tourism?

A | Our vision for Township Tourism is tourism-led economic development, in the historically disadvantaged areas of eThekwini, which include the Inanda, Umlazi and Clermont townships.

Q | When was your vision for Township Tourism born?

A | In the past much focus was placed on marketing Durban’s climate and beaches. Then, in the late 1990’s, in an effort to spread tourism to other areas, the Inanda Heritage Route was conceptualised. The initiative succeeded in drawing visitors to the destination, to explore its rich attributes: our political history, culture & religion, natural environment and contemporary lifestyle. This success story has inspired eThekwini Municipality to diversify its tourism product offering to include other surrounding townships such as Umlazi and Clermont.

Q | Mention some of the benefits of Township Tourism?

A | Townships have become sprawling and vibrant neighbours, birthplace of an exciting new urban-African culture. Township Tourism creates economic opportunities for locals, with income generation and job creation within an industry that is largely labour intensive, thus employing a wide variety of skills. Tourism benefits have a positive multiplier effect to other subsectors and related industries like,

www.durbanroutes.co.za

transport, retail, services, food and beverages.

Q | Name some of the townships in Durban that are already experiencing an influx of tourists.

A | Statistics have shown steady growth in the number of tourists visiting Inanda, Ntuzuma, KwaMashu (INK), Umlazi & Clermont.

Q | What are some of the attractions a tourist can expect to see and experience during a typical township visit?

Management Skills; Marketing Skills; Customer Care; Tour Guide Training, etc.

Q | Whilst hosting various international delegations in Durban, you have treated them to a township experience. Name some of these delegations, what was the nature of their visit, and what was their feedback?

Q | How are communities being groomed to become tourism ambassadors within their local communities?

A | US Civil Fighters, e.g. Jesse Jackson, Andrew Young; Uma Johnson; USA Consulate & delegation; Statesmen e.g. Kenneth Kaunda former Zambian State President; President of India and many others, have visited the townships and have all marvelled the richness of political history & culture found in townships Some international students, e.g. from Germany have spent months in the townships for their exchange programmes, etc. and have been impressed about the warmness of the people.

Q | What training and mentorship programmes exist that can equip local entrepreneurs operating within the townships, with the necessary skills to take advantage of this new brand of tourism.

A | In addition, the City has embarked on a Social Tourism Programmes which targets different groups to create awareness about heritage sites that are situated in Townships, e.g. Senior Citizens, People with Disabilities; Stokvel Groups, Religious Groups, etc.

A | Historic & Heritage Sites, e.g. Gandhi Settlement, JL Dube & Inanda Seminary at Inanda; Cultural & Religion, e.g. Shembe Religion at Inanda; Adventure, e.g. Umzinyathi Falls & Inanda Dam; contemporary lifestyle, e.g. Max’s Lifestyle at Umlazi; Zazi Street lifestyle at Clermont; Cultural Events, etc.

A | Tourism Awareness Programmes are conducted in the form of workshops, seminary, cultural events, etc.

Q | Tell us more about the “Know Your City” campaign, and how is Durban Tourism involved?

M

ax’s Lifestyle started out as a modest little butchery, offering a “buy and braai” Shisanyama service. Lounging within the sophisticated comfort of Max’s Lifestyle’s VIP Lounge today, you may find it difficult to picture Max’s as it once was, back in 2002 – an operation run from a simple one-room building, or “shack”, as Max refers to it. That humble venue, set beside the calm waters of a stream and in front of a bustling taxi rank, soon proved to be an oasis for parched and hungry commuters. When the taxi rank was eventually “IT’S A TOURIST PLACE. relocated by the local municipality, the customers remained; as A PLACE THAT BRINGS did a generous parking area for PEOPLE TOGETHER. potential patrons. The next step PEOPLE GET TO EAT was to fill these parking spots, and MEAT TOGETHER, TO an extra room was added to the TALK AND TO MEET existing building, to house a liquor FOR BUSINESS”. store and “take-away”. Before long, to accommodate the growing Max Mqadi demand, an entertainment deck was constructed over the stream. Max’s Butchery had become Max’s Lifestyle venue. The Shisanyama fires continued to send out smoke signals and delicious aromas, drawing in new patrons and kindling a dream within the heart of a man. Not even the countless refusals from financial institutions were able to quench this fire, and in 2009, Max faced his fear and self-funded the first phase of development. It was a make or break situation, where he stood to lose everything; but he kept his eyes on his dream and would not be dissuaded. As the buildings rose, so did the turnover, and soon the phenomenon of Max’s started to spread like wildfire. One phase of building led into the next and now, 14 years later, Max’s Lifestyle has become an institution in Durban, if not South African township culture. Corporates, celebrities, international tourists and locals of all races and places meet here, to enjoy sizzling Shisanyama and warm hospitality, Kasie-style.

A | Strict, hard-working. A never-give-up person and a go-getter.

Q Why is excellence important to you?

A | Whenever you do anything, you must make sure that it is perfect. People must see that you have done it properly, without a rush. I’m very passionate about quality.

Q What would you regard as one of the most important milestones in the past 14 years.

A | To be named among the best restaurants in the world, and the best restaurant in Africa.

Q What impact, in your opinion, does Max’s have on the community of Umlazi?

A | My vision is to take Max’s Lifestyle to the cities of Cape Town and Jo’burg. After that I want to see my brand internationally. It’s already there in name, but practically I would like to see it overseas.

A | The people who have supported me most are my family, including my mother, who has since passed away. I also have role models who keep me walking, like Dr Irvin Khoza - Chairman of the Orlando Pirates Football Club and the Premier Soccer League; and Nelson Mandela because of his journey. I always feel like crying when a person comes from nothing, and rises to something great. A person with a vision knows what he wants.

Q What makes Max’s Shisyama experience unique?

A | We offer the best hospitality. Whenever you come here, you choose your meat and it is braaied for you. We sell quality meat and produce our own wors, with our own blend of spices.

A | It is to change the lives of people. As you know government can’t do it on their own. They need us, as entrepreneurs, to change the lives of people. So I’m very involved. I come from

YOUNGBLOOD FLY-HALF INNY RADEBE IS TAKING TO PROFESSIONAL RUGBY LIKE A SHARK TO WATER.

I

nny Radebe has the quick hands, feet and mind of a Fly-half. Having worked his way up the ranks through the franchise’s age group teams, 21-year-old Inny is on the move. “I think rugby was a natural path for me”, he explains. “I have an older brother, who has played a huge role in my rugby career. Growing up he always played with a rugby ball, so it was natural for me to want to follow that”. And follow he did. Whilst schooling at St Sthithians in Johannesburg, Inny favoured team sports. He excelled at rugby, and was able to play two years of Craven Week rugby (2012-2013) for the Lions, before taking the plunge into Sharks water, by signing a deal to join the Sharks Academy after school. “I’ve always supported the Sharks. My mom was originally from Durban, and my family supported the Sharks” he says, and adds “A lot of my childhood heroes came through the Sharks ranks, so it was an easy decision”. After a victorious (38-0) appearance for the Sharks U19s against Western Province in

2013, Inny was included in the team. In 2014 he was the second-highest point scorer in the U19 Provincial Championship (122 points), and in 2015, during four appearances for UKZN Impi in the Varsity Shield, he not only scored 44 points but was awarded the “Player That Rocks” award. He went on to represent the Sharks XV squad in the Vodacom Cup (2015). The next rung on the ladder was to make it onto the Sharks U21 squad, which he did in style, achieving recognition as the top scorer (135 points) in the U21 Provincial Championships. Another major step-up was about to come into view, and in 2016 Inny was included in the Sharks Super Rugby squad. Sadly, after suffering a knee injury after two appearances for the Sharks XV in the 2016 Currie Cup qualification series, Inny was unable to continue playing for most of the season. Fortunately he recovered well, and in July he hit the ground running, wearing the number ten jersey for the rest of the Curry Cup series.

Q&A 01

Tell us about your transition from schoolboy rugby to professional rugby.

I think, having come from a school that’s not really well-known for their rugby, it was a bit of a step-up to come and play with guys who have come from the best rugby schools in the country. I definitely do think that it has benefited me a lot; and I think I’ve matured at a decent rate, having come through the junior ranks of the Sharks. I’ve enjoyed the experience. Ja, there have been some challenges, but I’ve enjoyed the ride”.

02

Tell us about your debut match for the Sharks.

I was really nervous. It was against the Pumas earlier this year, and at half time (I think it was Odwa who got hurt), I was expecting to play ten, maybe fifteen minutes at most, and the coach came to me and said “you’re going on”. It was a really nervous time for me, but it was an amazing experience I wouldn’t change for anything in the world”.

03

Was there a defining moment in your life, when you realised “I can do this!”?

I think I’ve always known that rugby is the path that I want to follow. Then coming to the Sharks, and having had a guy like Keegan Daniel, for example, to learn from… a lot of what he has said to me has opened my eyes hugely, and has motivated and inspired me. The role that he has played during my time here at the Sharks has given me a boost.

04

Pat Lambie was one of your teen role-models. What has it been like being mentored by him?

It’s awesome! I think Pat has got a huge amount of experience. He played one game for the Sharks and then he got called up to the Boks. He adds value to whatever team environment he’s in. I’ve watched him play and looked up to him since I was a teenager. That also just solidified my thoughts of coming to the Sharks. I’m thriving off it, and I’m learning as much from him as I can.

05

You are Curwin Bosch are in the same boat (or should I say, same waters), as newbies on the Sharks squad. Tell us about your interaction.

Because we’re around similar ages we tend to think the same, and have a lot of the same interests. We chat a lot and we get along quite nicely. It’s nice to be able to interchange on the field, so if one of us isn’t having a good day, the other can step up and take over the responsibility.

06

Is number 10 your ideal position?

I am able to play two other positions. When I was at school I played a lot of fullback and Inside Centre as well. And then I came to the Sharks, and they saw me as a Fly-half, so that’s my priority at the moment.

Tell us a bit about your family.

I have an older brother - he’s ten years older than me. Then I have twin sisters - they are 26 this year, and another sister of 27. I’m the youngest in the family, by quite some margin. We are a very close knit family and we did everything together growing up.

08

Do you have any hobbies?

I am starting to play golf now. A lot of the guys here at the Sharks have sort-of encouraged me to get into it, so I’m learning to play golf at the moment. I also love going to the beach, and I like the bush as well. There are a few places in Durban that I’ve discovered… I like the peace and quiet sometimes.

09

What do you love most about living in Durban?

The weather (definitely). We don’t have a winter here in Durban. I also love going to the beach.

10

What is your personal game plan, going forward?

I’m very excited, and honoured, to have made my debut for the Sharks. Looking forward to next year, I really want to make my Super Rugby debut for the Sharks. Hopefully I will stay injuryfree. I’d love to stay with the Sharks as long as I possibly can, so I’m looking to establish myself a bit more.

Be One Step Ahead, Before You Book Your Bed! The internet has made it so much easier to plan (and book) your holiday, but it is no secret that scamsters are constantly coming up with innovative ways to use the web to target the travel market worldwide. Apply the following tips and look before you book!

WHEN PRETTY PICS PLAY TRICKS

Photoshop is a wonderful tool, but it just may be that those pretty accommodation pictures you are eyeing longingly are worth a thousand words that may not be suitable for uttering out loud! If photos look “too perfect”, perhaps it’s time to take a closer look. And what better way to do that than with Google Earth. Click on the Street View feature and take a virtual trip to your holiday flat.

INEXPENSIVE COULD TURN OUT TO BE CHEAP

If the price is too good to be true… You know how the saying goes! There is nothing wrong with being a bargain hunter, but with great reward there comes great risk! This is especially true during peak holiday seasons, when discounted rates are not the order of the day. You are likely to get what you pay for. If your children have all grown up, allowing you to holiday out of peak season, you are definitely more likely to find a bargain.

AVOID BEING DUPED… DO SOME DETECTIVE WORK!

Visit credible websites and see what people are saying about the places where you plan on staying! Just remember to be discerning! Don’t only believe opinions, check for yourself and trust your instinct.

AVOID BEING SCARRED. USE YOUR CARD!

Scamters love cash, and once they have their hands on yours you can kiss it (and your holiday) goodbye! By using your credit card – MasterCash, Visa and American Express, you will be able to recover money you lost to fraud.

Perfect Pixels Durban-Based Photographer Durban-based photographer, Anthony Grote, continues to make his watermark on the world of photography. Page through this issue of Durban Routes to view some of his images of Durban!

A

nthony started zooming in on birdlife during his student years, in the early 90’s. But his focus changed from feathers to fins when he was introduced to the marvels of underwater photography, ironically whilst managing game farms in the Lowveld. After investing in his own underwater housing, he became completely immersed in the world of underwater photography. His lens eventually surfaced to explore beyond the natural wonders and nuances of this nautical wonderland; and so he splashed into the aquatic sport scene. “My main feeling was to try keep it involved with water, as I love the effect water gives to an image when combined with action”. After being invited to second friends in the Dusi Canoe Marathon, his interest was captured, not only by the sport itself, but also by the photographic opportunities it presented. As time lapsed, his photography skills took on a wider angle, enriching his portfolio to include a range of sports to test his shutter speed, including surf-ski racing, beach soccer, mountain biking, trail running and lifesaving. “Another interest which I have worked on in later years is architectural photography. I love shooting in low light conditions, balancing outside ambient light with interior lighting”. Applying his skills and talents commercially soon followed, and he has since clicked his way around the country and various exotic travel destinations; now incorporating time lapse, panoramas and virtual tours. There is nothing monochrome about Anthony Grote’s photographic career to date, which is saturated with high-profile media exposure, an impressive list of clients and number of prestigious awards.
