Incorporate Houseplants In Design

by Connie Byers

HOUSE PLANTS ARE A GREAT WAY TO BRING THE INTERIOR OF YOUR HOME ALIVE. From adding interest to dark corners or a dash of color to empty shelves, house plants can make any house feel like a home. Added bonus, they also help to purify the air. If you faced green-fingered failures in the past, you might be feeling leery at the mention of greenery, but before you opt for the faux version, below are some of the easiest houseplants to keep alive.

A dramatic plant that makes a statement as well as helps with healing. Aloe Vera is easy to care for and a great addition to kitchens since the soothing gel found inside the leaves can help calm minor burns.

The Peace Lily, with its glossy tear-shaped leaves and pure white flowers, is one of the most popular indoor plants. They prefer moist soil and are ideal for those who tend to overwater plants.

If you feel like you have a “black thumb,” this plant is for you. Nicknamed “Devil’s Ivy” for its ability to withstand nearly pitch-black conditions, Pothos is prolific and practically thrives on neglect.

Sansevieria is characterized by erect, fleshy, sharply-pointed, sword-shaped leaves that are typically deep green with light gray-green horizontal stripes. With over 70 different varieties to choose from, this hardy, droughttolerant plant makes a dramatic statement in any home.

The giant glossy leaves of the Monstera Deliciosa ad a touch of the tropics to any room. Native to Mexico and Central America, it’s an indoor plant that makes a big impact.

Despite its name, the spider plant is a welcome guest in any home. Characterized by narrow, strapshaped leaves arising from a central point, this plant produces little “babies” that you can clip off and re-pot for added greenery elsewhere.

This delicate trailing plant is tolerant and undemanding. Like a succulent, it stores water in its long stems and requires minimal watering.

The ZZ plant is a reliable house plant option for beginners since it can withstand all sorts of less-thanideal factors, like infrequent watering and low-light environments.
