BiograPhies aLDO cIPuLLO The designer of some of the most iconic jewels of  the  20th  century,  aldo  cipullo  created  a number  of  cartier’s  most  enduring  styles.  The Love bracelet, symbolic in that it requires some work to put on, and similarly, some effort to get out  of,  endures  as  one  of  cipullo’s  masterstrokes.  The  recently  revitalized  “clou”  nailform jewels are striking and amusing while continuing to bring an edginess to the jewellery box.  cipullo’s  association  with  cartier  remains  an important time of innovation, bringing together striking ideas and forms in gold and gem materials. aLeTTO bROS Famous  for  the  creation  of  fine  jewellery  and the  use  of  exceptional  gems,  aletto  brothers can  trace  their  roots  back  to  the  turn  of  the 19th  century,  when  current  director,  alfredo aletto’s great grandfather was commissioned to create  a  special  jewel  to  commemorate  the opening of the eiffel Tower. a family business, multiple generations embrace the opportunities that a smaller world offers, internationally seeking interesting and exceptional gems to incorporate into beautifully crafted jewels.  auDeMaRS PIGueT In  1875  Jules  Louis  audemars,  with  edward auguste  Piguet,  joined  together  to  combine their  skills  and  knowledge  to  produce  precise and complex timepieces.  audemars  Piguet  remains  in  the  hands  of  the founding families. This has led to brave innovation  and  many  timekeeping  firsts,  including  the first minute repeater wristwatch, the first skeletonized  pocket  watch,  the  first  self  winding grand  complication  watch,  and  the  first  watch featuring a carbon case and movement. bauMe & MeRcIeR established  since  1830,  baume  &  Mercier  has produced refined complications and innovations that have been incorporated into highly respected timepieces  ever  since.  Through  the  decades, baume  &  Mercier's  great  success  with  the watch-buying public has relied on the company remaining  current  with  new  styles  and  designs while it continues to make its mark on watchmaking techniques. bIRKS canada's premier jewellery retailer was founded in 1879, in Montreal, canada, by Henry birks. birks quickly became the prime destination for discerning  jewellery  connoisseurs.  The  20th

century  saw  prominent  jewellers  ellis  brothers and Ryrie incorporated with the birks name.  by the late twentieth century, canadian diamonds had become a central part of the birks engagement  ring  business.  birks  continues  to  be  a leader  in  the  canadian  jewellery  industry,  and the name Maison birks was unveiled in 2013.

bold and innovative style of bulgari had gained success within the jet set and movie world, and they focused on jewels with precious gems. In 1977 bulgari launched the bVLGaRI watch, a worldwide  success  story.  The  watch  component  of  bulgari  has  become  a  very  important part of the business since then.

Started in Milan in 1919, by Mario buccellati, the house  is  known  for  intricate  detail  and  unique textures and finishes in their jewels. The House of buccellati has long been recognized as having an important place in the pantheon of jewellers. buccellati  has  produced  jewels  for  many  royal houses and film stars. as the house expanded, shops  were  opened  in  Rome,  Florence  and new  york.  after  Mario  died  in  1965,  sons Gianmaria & Luca set out to expand the house on  an  international  scale,  with  shops  in  Hong Kong,  Japan,  Monte  carlo,  Paris,  Sardinia, Venice,  capri,  elba  and  beverly  Hills,  providing closer access to devoted clients. buccellati continues today to produce their jewels  in  small  workshops  with  artisans  of  many generations association with the House.

established in 1885, this Spanish house has kept its style current through innovation, introduction of  new  ideas,  designs,  and  designers,  and  by embracing changing markets around the world. Figurative  work,  and  naturalistic  flowing  forms are  central  elements  of  carrera  y  carrera designs,  which  are  represented  in  the  great houses of europe.

bReITLInG FOR benTLey breitling,  established  in  1884,  quickly  became associated with sports due to its accurate timing and  the  innovative  separate  buttons  for  timer start  and  reset.  With  the  advent  of  aviation, breitling  naturally  became  the  wristwatch  of choice  for  pilots.  The  luxury  association between the car driving experience of a bentley and the notable quality of a breitling is a natural step for both brands. buLGaRI Descending from an ancient family of Greek silversmiths, Sotirio bulgari founded the company in  1881,  manufacturing  precious  silver  objects. During the late 19th century, Sotirio moved to Italy and in 1884 opened his first shop in Rome. In  1905,  with  the  help  of  his  sons  costantino and  Giorgio,  he  inaugurated  the  shop  in  Via condotti, which remains bulgari’s flagship store. In  the  early  20th  century  the  two  brothers developed a deep interest and expertise in precious  stones,  jewels  and  watches.  The  period immediately  after  the  Second  World  War marked an important turning point in the history of bulgari. Giorgio and costantino decided to create a unique style inspired by Greco-Roman classicism, the Italian Renaissance, and the 19th century Roman school. by the 1950’s-60’s, the 1 8 2

caRTIeR Louis-François cartier founded cartier, in Paris, in 1847. He had three grandsons, Louis, Pierre and  Jacques,  who  were  responsible  for  establishing the famous world-wide empire. The next fifty years saw many milestones: Royal clientele from  england,  Siam  (now  Thailand),  Spain, Portugal, Greece, Italy, and Monaco. cartier, in 1906, first introduced jewellery in the geometric style  that  was  later  to  become  known  as  art Deco. among the exceptional jewels and gems sold  by  cartier  was  the  famous  blue  diamond “The  Hope”,  now  in  the  permanent  collection of  the  Smithsonian,  in  Washington.  cartier moved  to  their  current  location  at  653  Fifth avenue,  new  york  in  1917.  The  Morton  F. Plant mansion was exchanged for a two strand natural  oriental  pearl  necklace  for  Mrs.  Plant, and $100 for Mr. Plant. The name cartier continues  to  evoke  the  image  of  luxury  like  no other. cHOPaRD In 1860, in the Swiss village of Sonvilier, Louisulysse chopard, a talented timepiece craftsman, established  his  workshop.  His  watches  were quickly  recognized  for  their  quality,  and  were quickly in demand throughout europe. chopard has developed into a brand known for both  its  fine  timepieces,  and  its  joyful  jewels, with  styles  such  as  Happy  Diamonds,  and watches that are as reliable as they are a pleasure to wear. caVeLTI The youngest son of a Swiss family, Toni cavelti served a long apprenticeship in the goldsmith's trade,  developing  a  magical  skill  in  jewellery design. at the age of 23, equipped with only $8,

the tools of his trade and a romantic vision of the  canadian  West,  he  arrived  in  Vancouver. There he made his fortune by creating fine jewellery for “society” women, including the Queen. In 1971 he was commissioned to make a necklace of b.c. gold and local jade to mark a royal visit.  The modernist artistic movement under way in the  Vancouver  of  the  '50s  and  '60s  brought cavelti’s work to its full flowering, and helped to establish  his  national  and  international  reputation. cHaneL In 1910, Gabrielle chanel opened her first shop in  Paris,  under  the  name  "chanel  Modes." chanel’s  elegant  simplicity  was  an  immediate success,  and  inspired  the  fashion  industry around the world In 1932, Gabrielle chanel hosted an exhibition of  fine  jewellery  “bijoux  de  Diamants”  in  her residence,  establishing  her  affinity  for  the  diamond.  The  first  chanel  watches  were  launched  in 1987, with the creation of the Première watch, designed  by  Jacques  Helleu,  the  dial  of  the watch  being  reminiscent  of  the  shape  of  the Place  Vendôme  and  the  stopper  of  the  iconic chanel n°5 bottle. The  J12,  chanel’s  ceramic  sport  watch  was introduced in 2000, and immediately became a standard.  The  ceramic,  in  women’s  and  men’s styles, provides a lightness of look, but solidity of materials. cHauMeT The history of chaumet dates back to 1780 and is closely interwoven with the history of France.  The  wedding  of  napoleon  and  Josephine,  and later  with  the  archduchess  Marie-Louise  de Habsburg-Lorraine,  niece  of  Queen  Marieantoinette, brought chaumet numerous sumptuous  orders.  chaumet  became  the  most famous jeweller in europe and built up a prestigious clientele. Inspired  by  the  enchantment  of  nature,  Joseph chaumet  established  himself  as  the  absolute Master  of  the  belle  epoque.   With  his  elegant creations,  he  attracted  royals  and  aristocrats. aigrettes  and  tiaras  became  a  very  important part  of  the  firm’s  designs.  chaumet  has  produced  more  than  1,500  different  models  of tiaras. chaumet  created  simplified  designs  contained within rigid geometric outlines of the art Deco period in the 1920’s and 30’s.

Responding to the continuous social, economic and artistic changes, chaumet has maintained its legendary  reputation.  Design  is  determined  by the good taste of the contemporary Parisienne, always in search of something new, different and sumptuous. cHIMenTO Founded  in  1964,  in  the  province  of  Vicenza, the hub of jewellery in Italy, adriano chimento began  a  tradition  of  jewellery  that  utilizes  texture, light, and space to produce classic and eminently wearable jewels. The family business continues this tradition to this day. cORuM established  in  1955,  in  La  chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland, corum has established its place in the world of timepiece production with numerous  innovations  and  iconic  designs.  The ‘admiral’s  cup’,  introduced  in  1960,  remains  a central  element  of  the  brand.  The  1964  introduction  of  an  ultra  flat  movement  mounted inside  a  coin  proved  exceptionally  popular.  In the  year  2000,  the  corum  bubble  was  introduced, bringing a distinct element of novelty and urban chic to the wrists of corum clients.   cROPP & FaRR  Often manufacturing for major houses, such as cartier,  cropp  and  Farr  was  known  for  fine quality  gems  and  exceptional  craftsmanship, their jewels are classic in style and remain a regular  part  of  many  fine  jewellery  wardrobes. collectors continue to seek them out for their fine workmanship. DaVID Webb Originally  from  north  carolina,  David  Webb moved  to  new  york,  and  in  1948,  he  formed David  Webb  Inc.,  located  on  57th  Street. Within a few years, he had established himself as  one  of  the  most  fashionable  jewellers  in Manhattan, and at the height of production his two  full-time  workshops  employed  200  jewellers and 37 setters. The  new  york  social  register  flocked  to  him. They warmed to his personal charm and appreciated his brilliance as a designer.  David  Webb’s  designs  of  the  1950s  and  early 1960s showcased endless variations on flowers and  organic  forms.  His  love  of  nature  took shape in jewels of all sizes and varieties. almost all of his iconic animal jewelry was designed in the  1960s.  The  times  were  changing  and  he embraced  them:  the  rich  vocabulary  of  hammered gold, enamel, pearls, colors, textures and 1 8 3

shapes  were  synthesized  into  a  new  geometry that reflected the spirit of the 1970s. DaVID yuRMan David yurman, a sculptor who, in 1980, founded a jewellery company, produces small, wearable sculptural works, and has created an enduring  collection  sought  after  the  world  over.  His combinations of metals and gems create echoes of antiquity in very modern sculptural jewels. DeLRue Georges  Delrue  was  an  artist  who  worked  in precious metal. Delrue’s work, most prominent in the 1950’s and 1960’s, was experimental, and used emerging techniques and materials blended  with  traditional  methods.  Many  of  Delrue’s jewels  utilized  a  technique  of  lost  wax  casting and  produced  one-of-a-kind  jewels  with  a freeform style.  Delrue was experimenting with freeform fused materials  long  before  the  style  became  widespread in the 1970’s. His work is sought after by collectors,  and  is  represented  in  numerous  art museum collections. In  Florence,  1921,  Guccio  Gucci  opened  a leather  goods  and  luggage  store.  He  was inspired  by  the  leather  goods  he  saw  while working  at  the  Savoy  Hotel  in  London.  The english  “horse  set”  was  quite  likely  the  inspiration  for  the  horse-bit  shapes  that  would become  representative  of  Gucci,  and  continue as  iconic  symbols  of  the  brand  today.  Many Gucci jewels feature equestrian themes.

RayMOnD yaRD Raymond yard began his career as a door boy at Marcus & co Jewelers in new york. The year was 1898, and the young yard was thirteen. He worked  his  way  up  the  through  the  company, and by his 30’s, he was a senior salesman. 1922 was an important year for yard;it was the year that  John  D.  Rockefeller  suggested  that  yard open  his  own  business.  Rockefeller  recommended the new yard company to his wealthy and  influential  friends.  Woolworth,  duPont, Vanderbilt, and film stars such as Joan crawford, and Douglas Fairbanks were clients.  yard  established  his  reputation  producing  fine art Deco jewellery, focusing on fine gems and platinum in their manufacture. He established a “yard look” that continues to this day.  ROLex In 1905, at the age of 24, Hans Wilsdorf founded a company in London specializing in the distribution of timepieces. Wristwatches were not very  precise  at  the  time,  but  Hans  Wilsdorf foresaw  that  they  could  become  not only  elegant, but also reliable. To  convince  the  public  of  the  reliability  of  his timepieces, he equipped each watch with small, very  precise  movements  manufactured  by  a Swiss watchmaking company in bienne. Rolex  first  concentrated  on  the  quality  of  the movements.  The  relentless  quest  for  chronometric precision rapidly led to success. In 1910, a  Rolex  watch  was  the  first  wristwatch  in  the world  to  receive  the  Swiss  certificate  of chronometric Precision, granted by the Official Watch Rating centre in bienne. Van cLeeF & aRPeLS Van cleef & arpels has always been inspired by the  unique  creative  energy  of  love,  for  it  was love which brought the Maison into being. ZenITH In  the  middle  of  the  19th  century,  Georges Favre-Jacot, in Le Locle, Switzerland, set out to produce the most accurate and reliable watches available. He brought a diversity of independent  watchmakers  together  under  one  roof.  by 1911,  a  complete  production  line,  and  a  comprehensive design plan from packaging to stores, was brought under the name Zenith.  Still operating in its original, unesco world heritage  site,  Zenith  produces  fine  timepieces  in keeping  with  its  ambitious  beginnings.  Zenith watches are sought all around the world. *Amongst the information provided in these biographical data are details from the official web sites of the named companies, houses, and designers.
