This exceptional emerald ring by Cartier stands out for its design, and is set with an emerald of the finest quality, but its reported history is equally interesting. The ring is offered at Dupuis after passing from mother to daughter for three generations in an important Canadian family. The ring was purchased in the 1920s when the family was visiting Cartier in Paris. The family story states that while they were at Cartier, they were introduced to Russian Prince Felix Youssoupoff. The prince was said to have been consigning the ring for re-sale at Cartier. The Youssoupoff family reportedly sustained itself by selling jewels and other assets after arriving in Paris.

With report 2155694319 dated 3 October 2013 from the Gemological Institute of America stating that the diamond weighing 2.29 carats is K colour, VS2 clarity

The Youssoupoff family was known to have acquired jewels at Cartier. The ring is certainly by Cartier, and is a jewel that would not be out of place on the hand of royalty.

BIOgRAPhIES ALDO CIPuLLO The designer of some of the most iconic  jewels  of  the  20th  Century,  Aldo Cipullo  created  a  number  of  Cartier's most enduring styles. The Love bracelet, symbolic  in  that  it  requires  some  work to  put  on,  and  similarly,  some  effort  to get  out  of,  endures  as  one  of  Cipullo’s masterstrokes.  The  recently  revitalized Clou  nail-form  jewels  are  striking  and amusing  while  continuing  to  bring  an edginess to the jewellery box.  Cipullo's  association  with  Cartier remains an important time of innovation, bringing  together  striking  ideas  and forms in gold and gem materials. ANGeLA CuMMINGS Angela  Cummings  was  born  in  Austria and  raised  in  the  united  States.  She received  her  formal  design,  gem  and jewellery  training  in  Italy  and  Germany before returning to the uSA and joining the prestigious design team at Tiffany & Co in 1968.  By 1975, Tiffany was offering jewels under the Angela Cummings design name.  Angela  Cummings  joyful  designs  incorporated  bold  forms  and  bright  colours with unexpected combinations of materials.    In  1984,  Cummings  formed  her own  company  and  her  design  line  has been  offered  through  Bergdorf Goodman and other prestige retailers. AuDeMArS PIGueT In  1875  Jules  Louis  Audemars,  with edward  auguste  Piguet,  joined  together to combine their skills and knowledge to produce  precise  and  complex  timepieces. Audemars Piguet remains in the hands of the founding families. This has led  to  brave  innova-  tion  and  many timekeeping  firsts,  including  the  first minute  repeater  wristwatch,  the  first skele- tonized pocket watch, the first self winding  grand  complication  watch,  and the  first  watch  featuring  a  carbon  case and movement.

BIrKS Canada's premier jewellery retailer was founded  in  1879,  in  Montreal,  Canada, by Henry Birks. Birks quickly became the prime  destination  for  discerning  jewellery  connoisseurs.  The  20th  century saw  prominent  jewellers  ellis  Brothers and  ryrie  incorporated  with  the  Birks name.  By  the  late  twentieth  century, Canadian diamonds had become a central  part  of  the  Birks  engagement  ring business. Birks continues to be a leader in  the  Canadian  jewellery  industry,  and the  name  Maison  Birks  was  unveiled  in 2013. BuCCeLLATI Started  in  1919  Mario  Buccellati  the house  is  known  for  intricate  detail  and unique textures and finishes in their jewels.  The  House  of  Buccellati  has  long been  recognized  as  an  important  place in the lexicon of jewellery.  Buccellati has produced jewels for many royal houses and  film  stars.  As  the  house  expanded, shops  were  opened  in  rome  and Florence,  New  York  and  West  Palm Beach. After  Mario  died  in  1965,  sons Gianmaria & Luca set out to expand the house  on  an  international  scale,  with shops  in  Hong  Kong,  Japan,  Monte Carlo,  Paris,  Sardinia,  Milan,  venice, Capri,  elba,  New  York,  Beverly  Hills, providing  closer  access  to  devoted clients. At the same time, two of Mario’s other  sons,  Federico,  and  Lorenzo embarked  on  their  own  jewellery endeavours. With  all  branches  now  reunited  into  a single  company,  Buccellati  continues today to produce their unique jewels in small  workshops  with  artisans  of  many generations association with the House.

BuLGArI Descending  from  an  ancient  family  of Greek silversmiths, Sotirio Bulgari founded the company in 1881, manufacturing precious  silver  objects.  During  the  late 19th century, Sotirio moved to Italy and in 1884 opened his first shop in rome. In  1905,  with  the  help  of  his  sons Costantino and Giorgio, he inaugurated the shop in via Condotti, which remains Bulgari’s flagship store. In the early 20th century the two brothers  developed  a  deep  interest  and expertise in precious stones, jewels and watches.  The  period  immediately  after the  Second  World  War  marked  an important turning point in the history of Bulgari. Giorgio and Costantino decided to  create  a  unique  style  inspired  by Greco-roman  classicism,  the  Italian renaissance,  and  the  19th  century roman  school.  By  the  1950’s-60’s,  the bold and innovative style of Bulgari had gained  success  within  the  jet  set  and movie world, and they focused on jewels with precious gems. In  1977  Bulgari  launched  the  BvLGArI watch,  a  worldwide  success  story.  The watch  component  of  Bulgari  has become  a  very  important  part  of  the business since then. CArTIer Louis-François  Cartier  founded  Cartier, in  Paris,  in  1847.  He  had  three  grandsons,  Louis,  Pierre  and  Jacques,  who were  responsible  for  establishing  the famous  world-wide  empire.  The  next fifty years saw many milestones: royal clientele from england, Siam (now Thailand),  Spain,  Portugal,  Greece,  Italy, and Monaco. Cartier, in 1906, first introduced  jewellery  in  the  geometric  style that was later to become known as Art Deco.  Among  the  exceptional  jewels and  gems  sold  by  Cartier  was  the famous blue diamond The Hope, now in the  permanent  collection  of  the Smithsonian,  in  Washington.  Cartier moved to their current location at 653

Fifth  Avenue,  New  York  in  1917.  The Morton F. Plant mansion was exchanged for  a  two  strand  natural  oriental  pearl necklace for Mrs. Plant, and $100 for Mr. Plant.  The  name  Cartier  continues  to evoke the image of luxury like no other. CASTeLLANI One  of  the  most  important  names  in jewellery, Castellani jewels are is eagerly sought  by  collectors  around  the  world. Fortunato  Pio  Castellani  (1793-1865), and  his  sons,  Alessandro,  and  Augusto, were based in rome in the 19th century.  The house of Castellani used inspiration from  ancient  etruscan,  roman,  and egyptian  sources  to  bring  vitality  to modern  jewels.    Amphorae,  ancient wine jug shapes, symbols from Classical history,  and  mystical  animal  forms  featured extensively in Castellani jewels.  Castellani  re-discovered  ancient  metalworking techniques, and used the methods  in  unique  and  intricate  jewels offered to 19th Century collectors. The house  produced  jewels  of  enduring beauty  that  remain  a  high  priority  for collectors around the world. CHOPArD In 1860, in the Swiss village of Sonvilier, Louis-ulysse  Chopard,  a  talented  timepiece  craftsman,  established  his  workshop.  His  watches  were  quickly  recognized for their quality, and were quickly in demand throughout europe. Chopard  has  developed  into  a  brand known for both its fine timepieces, and its  joyful  jewels,  with  styles  such  as Happy Diamonds, and watches that are as  reliable  as  they  are  a  pleasure  to wear. COruM established  in  1955,  in  La  Chaux-deFonds,  Switzerland,  Corum  has  established its place in the world of timepiece production  with  numerous  innovations and iconic designs. The Admiral's Cup',

introduced  in  1960,  remains  a  central element  of  the  brand.  The  1964  introduction  of  an  ultra  flat  movement mounted  inside  a  coin  proved  exceptionally  popular.  In  the  year  2000,  the Corum Bubble was introduced, bringing a distinct element of novelty and urban chic to the wrists of Corum clients. DAvID WeBB Originally  from  North  Carolina,  David Webb  moved  to  New  York,  and  in 1948,  he  formed  David  Webb  Inc., located  on  57th  Street.  Within  a  few years, he had established himself as one of  the  most  fashionable  jewellers  in Manhattan, and at the height of production  his  two  full-time  workshops employed 200 jewellers and 37 setters. The New York social register flocked to him.  They  warmed  to  his  personal charm and appreciated his brilliance as a designer.  David  Webb's  designs  of  the 1950s and early 1960s showcased endless  variations  on  flowers  and  organic forms. His love of nature took shape in jewels  of  all  sizes  and  varieties.  Almost all  of  his  iconic  animal  jewelry  was designed in the 1960s. The times were changing  and  he  embraced  them:  the rich  vocabulary  of  hammered  gold, enamel,  pearls,  colors,  textures  and shapes  were  synthesized  into  a  new geometry that reflected the spirit of the 1970s. De BeerS De  Beers,  the  world’s  best-known  diamond  company,  was  established  in 1888, shortly after the discovery of diamonds in South Africa. More than a century  later,  the  company  remains  the planet’s  most  widely  recognized  diamond  brand.  In  2016,  the  company opened  its  latest  diamond  mine  in Canada’s north. Today,  De  Beers  also  features  retail boutiques  around  the  world.  Diamond connoisseurs now have the opportunity to purchase fine diamond jewels direct1 9 5

ly  from  this  highly  regarded  specialist, featuring  its  brand  of  Forevermark  diamonds. FrANCK MuLLer In  the  early  1990's  Franck  Muller  and vartan  Sirmakes,  made  the  bold  move to establish a company with a focus on exceptional  timepieces.  The  slogan  of Franck  Muller  is  Master  of Complications,  and  this  label  is  earned through the continued experimentation and  exploration  into  the  complexity  of the  modern  timepiece.  Franck  Muller timepieces are exceptional both in their technical  accomplishment,  and  in  their elegance of design. GeOrG JeNSeN Georg Jensen set out, in 1904 to create designs that possessed both functionality  and  beauty,  the  essence  of  the  Arts and Crafts movement. Georg  Jensen's  style  embraced  the  Art Nouveau with a modern sensibility and a Danish flair. Nature, tamed into flowing forms and embellished with geometry,  is  a  constant  theme  in  Jensen designs.  Jensen  has  featured  collaborations with some of the most important names  in  design,  and  these  designers each bring their presence to the essence of Jensen. GIrArD-PerreGAux In  1852,  Constant  Girard  founded  the Girard  &  cie  firm.  Two  years  later,  he married  Marie  Perregaux,  and  in  1856 the union of their surnames gave rise to the Girard-Perregaux company. In 1880, Constant  Girard  developed  a  wristwatch  aimed  at  German  naval  officers, two thousand watches would be made. This  production  represented  the  first major  market  sale  of  wristwatches.  In 1970, the company was leaning towards quartz  movements,  launching Switzerland's first large scale production of  quartz  wristwatches.  The  company then switched their focus back to classic

movements,  but  continued  to  research quartz.  In  2007,  Girard-Perregaux opened  its  first  bou-  tiques  in  china,  in beijng and then Shanghai. With a focus on  complex  and  sophisticated  movements, Girard-Perregaux remains at the forefront of developments in timekeeping,  including  advanced  quartz  movements. GrAFF upon  the  establishment  of  his  business in  London,  england,  in  1960,  Lawrence Graff  quickly  built  a  reputation  for extraordinary diamonds. Since that time, some  of  the  most  important  and notable  diamonds  in  the  world  have passed through the doors of Graff boutiques.  Graff  often  sources  diamonds directly from the world’s mines, polishes them  in  their  own  facilities,  and  builds them  into  striking  and  exceptional  jewels. using the catch line The Most Fabulous Jewels  in  the  World,  Graff  is  synonymous  with  luxury.  With  stores  in  the major  jewel  and  design  centres,  Graff jewels  are  offered  to  exclusive  clients around the world. HAMMerMAN BrOTHerS Hammerman Brothers, founded in 1946, is  an  American  jewellery  design  house that  has  proudly  held  to  its  American origins. The company was established to offer  high  quality  jewels  to  prestige retailers in the united States. In the past 70  years,  Hammerman  Brothers  has grown  to  meet  the  needs  of  the  jewellery  market,  always  with  the  latest  in design and fine workmanship. The ongoing ability to recognize the needs of jewellery consumers has allowed the family owned  company  to  remain  prominent into the 21st century. HArrY WINSTON Harry  Winston  began  to  revolutionize the jewellery world when he opened his business  in  New  York  in  1932.  He quickly became known for innovation in design and marketing, but his fame was

really established in his ability to find the most exceptional gems in the world, and to  bring  them  to  just  the  right  clients. Noted  for  the  finest  gems,  beautifully cut  diamonds,  and  unparalleled  jewellery, Winston remains an oasis for the jewel lovers of the world. Some of the most  famous  jewels  in  history  have passed through Harry Winston's doors, the  Hope  Diamond  being  one  of  the more  notable,  Winston  donated  the priceless  Hope  to  the  Smithsonian Institution. At Winston, the focus on fine quality  extends  to  even  the  smallest  of jewels. ILIAS LALAOuNIS Ilias  Lalaounis  comes  from  a  family  of Goldsmiths and watchmakers, he joined the family business, Zolotas, in 1940, but by  the  1960’s  Ilias  was  most  interested in exploring themes inspired by ancient Greek  civilization,  and  by  1969,  had established an independent company to focus on his interests. He had great success with themes from antiquity, and this inspired  others  to  explore  ancient  culture through jewellery design. Ilias  Lalaounis’  four  daughters,  Katerini, Demetra,  Maria  and  Ioanna  direct  jewellery production and international sales. They also operate a Lalaounis museum. JAeGer-LeCOuLTre In  1847,  Antoine  LeCoultre  created  a revolutionary system that did away with the  need  for  keys  to  rewind  and  set watches.  Since  that  time,  the  company has produced many innovations to make timekeeping  simpler,  more  convenient, more accurate, or to accommodate the specific  requirements  of  clients. Producing  complicated  watches,  and even  more  sophisticated  chiming repeater  watches,  the  brand  is  known for  ultra  thin  movements,  and  accurate measurement. One of the most famous watches is the unusual reverso, originally designed for english Polo players who wanted  to  easily  reverse  the  watch  to protect the dial from damage. While it's an  attractive  and  highly  desired  model, 1 9 6

this is a minor innovation compared to some  of  the  sophistication  that  JaegerleCoultre produces. KArL STITTGeN Jeweller  and  goldsmith,  Karl  Stittgen began  his  career  designing  and  making contemporary jewellery in vancouver in 1959. Over several decades he created an original and distinctive body of work inspired by the organic forms of nature and  the  clean  lines  of  architecture. Creations of gold, platinum, gemstones, pearls, ancient coins and artifacts earned him  loyal  customers  and  much  critical acclaim  during  what  some  have  called the golden age of design in vancouver. Stittgen  received  the  British  Columbia Creative  Achievement  Award  of Distinction in vancouver in 2009. MAPPIN & WeBB In  1775,  Jonathan  Mappin  founded  the company  specializing  in  silver  cutlery. After  nearly  a  century,  in  1862,  a  new business  with  the  name  Mappin  & Webb  opened  aon  regent  Street  in London,  bringing  a  focus  on  jewels  to supplement the silverware of Mappin. Mappin & Webb quickly became known for its fine quality jewels and continued to  be  a  very  important  silversmith. Queen  victoria  granted  Mappin  & Webb  a  royal  Warrant  as  silversmiths, and  today  Mappin  and  Webb  holds  a royal Warrant as silversmiths to Queen elizabeth II and to Prince Charles. Today, discerning buyers look to Mappin &  Webb  for  important  jewels.  At  auction,  items  from  Mappin  &  Webb  continue to generate excitement, due to the company’s  centuries-old  reputation  for fine quality.

MAuBOuSSIN established  in  1827,  Mauboussin  found increased  notoriety  among  discerning buyers,  and  experts  alike,  winning  a medal  at  the  exposition  universelles  in Paris,  1878.  In  1925,  at  the  exposition des  Arts  Decoratifs,  the  jury  awarded the house the grand prize for their innovative Art Deco designs. Still  at  the  cutting  edge  of  design, Mauboussin  has  an  international  presence  in  Paris,  Tokyo,  and  New  York, among other locations, each of which is a work of art itself, displaying the works of the jeweller's art within. PATeK PHILIPPe On  May  1st,  1839  businessman  Antoni Patek and watchmaker Fran?ois Czapek joined forces to found 'Patek, Czapek & Cie' in Geneva. In 1844, Patek met the French  watchmaker,  Jean-Adrien Philippe  in  Paris  where  the  latter  presented his pioneering stem winding and setting  system  by  the  crown.  When Czapek  decided  to  leave,  the  company name changed to 'Patek & Cie'. Later, in 1851  when  Adrien  Philippe  officially became associated with the company, it was  renamed  'Patek  Philippe  &  Cie', before changing once more in 1901 to 'ncienne  Manufacture  d'Horlogerie Patek Philippe & Cie, S.A.'. In 1932, the company was purchased by two brothers, Charles and Jean Stern, owners of a fine  dial  factory  in  Geneva.  Since  then, 'Patek  Philippe  S.A.'  remains  a  family owned firm. Patek Philippe is one of the most  highly  respected  names  in  timepieces,  and  continues  to  produce extraordinary and complicated watches, desired by collectors around the world. PIAGeT In  1874,  in  La  Côte-aux-Fées,  a  small Swiss  village  Georges  Édouard  Piaget started his first workshop on the family farm  and  devoted  himself  to  making high-precision movements that he soon began supplying to the most prestigious brands. In  1943,  the  company  made  a  decision

that from then on, the movement factory  from  La  Côte-aux-Fées  produced watches  signed  by  and  sold  under  its own name. In  1957,  Piaget  began  to  design  and build  the  ultra-thin  movements,  and  by 1960,  Piaget  launched  the  world’s thinnest  self-winding  movement.  It measured just 2.3 mm thick. In  1979,  they  launched  the  Piaget  Polo watch.  Avant-garde,  yet  classic  enough never  to  go  out  of  style,  it  quickly became an icon that was adopted by the international jet set. Piaget  fuses  technique  and  design  now more than ever in jewellery and watchmaking. rOLex In 1905, at the age of 24, Hans Wilsdorf founded a company in London specializing  in  the  distribution  of  timepieces. Wristwatches  were  not  very  precise  at the  time,  but  Hans  Wilsdorf  foresaw that  they  could  become  not  only  elegant, but also reliable. To convince the public of the reliability of  his  timepieces,  he  equipped  each watch  with  small,  very  precise  movements  manufactured  by  a  Swiss  watchmaking  company  in  Bienne.  rolex  first concentrated  on  the  quality  of  the movements.  The  relentless  quest  for chronometric  precision  rapidly  led  to success. In 1910, a rolex watch was the first wristwatch in the world to receive the  Swiss  Certificate  of  Chronometric Precision, granted by the Official Watch rating Centre in Bienne. Four  years  later,  in  1914,  Kew Observatory in Great Britain awarded a rolex  wristwatch  a  class  “A”  precision certificate,  a  distinction  that  until  that point in time had been reserved exclusively  for  marine  chronometers.  From that date forward, the rolex wristwatch was synonymous with precision. rolex  moved  to  Geneva,  a  city renowned internationally for watchmaking.  Montres  rolex  S.A.  was  registered in  Geneva  in  1920.  Since  that  time, rolex  has  become  one  of  the  most 1 9 7

widely recognized watches in the world. TIFFANY & CO. Founded  in  New  York  in  1837  Tiffany remains an icon to jewellery consumers around the world. Known for innovation and high standards, Tiffany had adopted the  silver  standard  of  “925”,  and  95% standard for platinum, both later adopted  as  uSA  standards.  In  1886  Tiffany introduced its iconic Tiffany setting providing  a  light  and  open  setting  to  best display a diamond. Constantly working to bring the latest in design  innovations  to  its  offerings, Tiffany  regularly  brings  designers  to  its clients;  in  1956,  Jean  Schlumberger joined  and  in  the  famous  annual  “Blue Book” of 1974-75, elsa Peretti was introduced. Paloma Picasso was first featured in  1980  and  architect  Frank  Gehry  has designed many current offerings. Drawing on the natural world, the company was early on recognized as a master  of  Art  Nouveau  and  the  Arts  and Crafts movement. Through the decades it  has  remained  at  the  forefront  of design, noted for the use of exceptional materials and unwavering standards. vACHerON CONSTANTIN Jean-Marc vacheron founded vacheron in 1755 and his son and grandson eventually succeeded him in the family business. In 1819, Fran?ois Constantin joined as a partner, and the name changed to vacheron  &  Constantin,  only  in  1970 changing  to  vacheron  Constantin.  An innovator in the technical aspects of the timepiece,  vacheron  Constantin  has remained among the most sought after brands in the market.

vAN CLeeF & ArPeLS van  Cleef  &  Arpels  has  always  been inspired by the unique creative energy of love, for it was love which brought the Maison into being. Towards the end of the 19th century, a young  girl  named  estelle  Arpels  –  the daughter of a dealer in precious stones –  met  a  boy  named  Alfred  van  Cleef, the son of a stone-cutter. This led them to founding the Maison of van Cleef & Arpels. In 1906, Alfred set up in business with estelle’s brother Charles, a talented salesman who managed their new boutique  in  Paris’  Place  vendôme.  Two years later, estelle’s brother Julien joined the  firm;  a  third  brother,  Louis,  joined them in 1912. Over the years that followed, the name van  Cleef  &  Arpels  became  synonymous with the most exquisite jewellery in the world. With that achievement, the love,  which  first  brought  estelle  and Alfred  together,  lives  on  to  this  day through  the  many  enchanting  love  stories of the Maison. van Cleef & Arpels remains one of the most desired names in jewellery, noted for many innovations in design, manufacturing and gem setting techniques which changed the jewellery landscape and the way we think of jewellery.

verDurA Born in Palermo, in 1898, Duke Fulco di verdura  lived  a  privileged  aristocratic european  lifestyle  as  a  child  and  young man.  In  his  30's  he  ventured  to  the promised land of Hollywood, where he designed jewels for the Hollywood stars.  By 1939 New York had beckoned, and verdura  quickly  established  himself  as the  society  jeweller,  with  backing  of friends such as vincent Astor and Cole Porter.  The  shop,  at  712  Fifth  Avenue, had all the A list clients.  verdura's style, at once elegant and classic, was imbued with whimsy, and often featured  exceptional  use  of  colours  in gems.  The  quality  of  work  was  only  of the highest standard.  The house continues to produce the finest of jewels and still  uses  many  of  verdura's  timeless designs. *Amongst the information provided in these biographical data are details from the official web sites of the named companies, houses, and designers.
