A PROJECT TO REDESIGN SPODE WORKS FACTORY IN STOKE'S TOWN CENTRE AS A POTTERY PARK TO ENHANCE THE VITALITY OF THE CITY

Stoke-on-Trent

ACKNOWLEDGEMENT The project would not have been possible without the support, guidance and advice from tutors in various ways. The topic of this project was decided after communication with Ms. Julie Fitzpatrick and Mr. Jonathan Djabarouti, as a development of studio A. I hope to do my best to design a scheme with practical use and cultural significance. In this process, my mentor Julie Fitzpatrick has given me a lot of help and support, and many of her suggestions are very useful. I would like to thank all the people who helped me in the process of completing the design.

Introduction Stoke is one of a cluster of towns in central England known collectively as ‘the potteries’. In the 18th century, Stoke's ceramic industry occupied an important position in the British ceramic industry, however as the British economy moved away from manufacturing, stoke were left in stark post-industrial decline, and this situation continues to today.

The pottery-making bottle kilns that once characterized the townscape were gradually dismantled and great holes were left in the urban fabric. The most recent demolition took place in 2018. Compared with other cities and towns, Stoke's development seems to be stagnant, with economic downturn, population loss, and the proportion of vacant houses increasing year by year. What will stoke do in the future in this urban crisis?

Stoke-on-Trent

is located in West Midlands in the

England with an area of 36 square miles. It is situated between Manchester and Birmingham. Spode Works is a huge 9-acre site in the heart of Stoke Town. It is bounded on three sides by the High Street, The Town Hall and the A500 road. It has close proximity to the train station and the university quarter.

I t is no coincidence that the site is centrally 05

located within the town, for years it was the focal point of the city. This project tr y to encourage a return to this scenario.

Spode pottery factory established in 1776, but for various reasons, the factor y, which local people are proud of, was finally closed in 2008, retaining only part of its functions.

07

REASONS FOR THE POTTERY THEME PARK AND WHY TO REVIVE THIS FACTORYďźš

The pottery factory is a memory of many Stoke people.

In the past period, this was the impression of

the city by many Britons. The city was famous for its pottery in the past

The decline of the city is inevitable because of

the depletion of coal resources, but Stoke is still a symbol that distinguishes the city from Britain and other European cities. The concept of park is only the initial stage of rejuvenating the city. The arrival of tourists can inject vitality into the local economy, thus driving the transformation of the city

T his section is about the problems I found

and the architectural methodology I used to solve them. I think the most important thing is that the A500 highway separates the base from the other half of the city and the most important railway station. This road acts as a barrier to the communication between the two parts of the city. Another important issue is so many industrial building was being demolished and not being used. These demolished buildings leave a huge void in the city texture. There are other problems such as aging, inconvenient transportation and lack of infrastructure. The result of these problems is that no one wants to come to the base.

section shows the changes before

and after the design of the base and the process of concept formation. First of all, I demolished some buildings in poor condition. This conclusion is based on the results of previous research and analysis. Then I selected several impor tant spatial nodes and gave them functions. Finally, I connected these important nodes to form a complete tour path.

This section shows the general layout of the

base that after my replanning and my design concept Connects all parts of the base with a series of green spaces and squares. The whole planning divides the base into four parts: pedestrian overpass, commercial area, park area and service facility area. My design process is problem-oriented. First of all, in order to solve the problem of barrier, I designed a pedestrian bridge connecting the two parts of the city, which can bring tourists and citizens to the base more conveniently and directly. At the same time, I planned service facilities such as office area and tourist art center on the original empty land, which also solved the second problem I mentioned earlier.。I have redesigned some areas around the original base as a continuous business belt, and connected it with the other half of the city with important infrastructure such as railway station and university through pedestrian bridge. The advantage of doing so is to ensure the continuity of business and separate the business system from the theme park, so as to reduce their mutual adverse effects.

C, which is based on the overall planning of studio B. I chose the open space in the s o u t h e a s t c o r n e r of t h e f a c t o r y a s t h e base of the new building. This building is designed to serve the whole area and serve as a bridge between the park and the city to promote the development of the city.

I will narrate in the order I think when I design.

First of all, I built an electronic model of my previous plan and drew a section of the original base, which will allow me to analyze the site more intuitively. This picture shows my previous plan. The huge open space in the picture is my studio C site, on which I will design the tourist art center. The blue river in the picture is the Trent River, which is about 6 meters wide.

I think the existing site conditions are not good

A f ter

clarif ying the problem, I began to

conceive some architectural functions. This picture shows my idea. I will mainly talk about the idea of rock music theater. In fact, rock music is also par t of local culture, but like potter y, it has gradually declined for some reasons. However, Stoke's rock music has gradually recovered in recent years. Many local young people like it very much, but there is no suitable venue for performance, so I decided to help them. At the same time, I think Stoke also needs multi-cultural development.

Changes To The Site

Changed Site 39

A f ter

finding out the problems, I began

to transform the site. First, I connected the land on both sides of the river with a small bridge, and then I demolished par t of the original parking building, which provided the possibility for people to enter the base from the East. In the second step, I demolished a small part of the building of Civic Center, which will fur ther increase the connection between the base and the city. My extension of the river is to ensure the privacy of the private land at the back of the City Council.

THOUGHTS ON THE INTERNAL FUNCTIONS OF BUILDINGS

43

44

45

After determining the layout of the building, I

made a tentative plan for the style and elevation of the building. The first picture shows some of my initial ideas. I hope to integrate the building and the environment by reflecting the environment of the park through glass, and I want to use the pedestrian passage outside the building to play the role of building link.

After that, I began to think about the internal

space structure after analyzing these functions. However, these functions have adverse effects on each other. For example, the noise of theater will destroy the atmosphere of ar t galler y, affect the work of artists, and affect the people with different purposes. So after my thinking, I determined this architectural space form: theater is an independent central structure to reduce the impact on other spaces, each functional space has its own entrance and exit, but there is a connection between them.

space structure of the building. First of all, I hope that the building has four functions: rock music theater, tourist center, art galler y and artist studio. Then I determined the functional 46

The purpose of the last page is to represent

the site function outside the building and previous architectural concepts. The building is surrounded by outdoor activity site, and its rich functions help to attract more people to go deep into the base and bring popularity to the site.
