WELCOME

WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME YOU GOT AWAY TO MAGGIE? Once-upon-a-time Maggie Island businesses were famous for their poor customer service. True. ‘Island Time’ had a lot to do with it. Our classic story happened long ago when the ferry used to stop at Arcadia. The new bride (that would be Stacey) and I stayed for a weekend at the Arcadia Hotel. For just the one night we took two suitcases so we had hopes of catching the ‘courtesy’ bus to the hotel. No bus arrived after half an hour so we started walking. Half way down the track the bus passed us going to ‘meet’ the ferry. No worries. We made it to the hotel, checked in and had a fantastic time. Checking out on Sunday we took our bags to Reception. As I stood at the counter, through the back door I could see a bloke with a hose washing the courtesy bus. I asked the front office lady if the bus was going to the ferry. She turned to the door and yelled, “Bill? You going to the ferry?” To which Bill replied; “How many are there?” She looked at us;“Two?” To which Bill replied; “Nuh.” So we hoofed it back to the ferry. That was once-upon-a-time. A few weeks ago now, Stacey and I went to the Island for a long weekend with our friends Leanne and Diane. The service was outstanding! It started with the happy girl on the car ferry who sold us some coffees and wished us a pleasant stay, it continued with the R&R ladies at the Picnic Bay Hotel, then the taxi driver who was so proud of the place, and continued on a daily basis with the staff at Caffe Dell’ Isola (great Italian pizza at Arcadia) and Peppers Blue on Blue. I was told that when Peppers opened, it was their service standards that prompted other businesses to become more professional. The excellent customer service is one reason why Maggie deserves the praise it’s getting from visitors and holidaymakers. We’ll definitely be going back to Magnetic Island again (and again). Things (and people) I appreciate this month: Gloss Car Detailing (love your work Jason), Tyrion Lannister, Jon Snow, Samwell Tarly, my wife Stacey (only three mentions this month), Townsville Hospital Foundation, rainy weekends, our (adorable) new great niece Camryn Toomey, Sawai Thai Massage, Roger’s birthday, and every day above ground. Hope you enjoy this month’s HOME issue... SCOTT MORRISON | PUBLISHER
