04 WELCOME TO ORIEL PARK:THE HOME OF FOOTBALL

EDITORIAL

Colm Murphy

The news that Dundalk FC will not be extending the squad in the July transfer window is tough on Ian Foster who has had absolutely no luck with his injury ravaged squad this season.Who knows where we might be if the likes of Stephen Maher, Jason Byrne and Stephen McDonnell had been available. The team have been heroic so far this year considering the fact that the likes of Colin Hawkins, Dean Bennett, Nathan Murphy, Keith Ward and Greg Bolger (and more) have put their bodies on the line and played with injury. It was noticeable against St Pats that both Dean and Colin were in extreme difficulty yet played on until the end. It’s admirable dedication to “the cause” and I know all Dundalk fans are appreciative of the sacrifices that the players have made this season.

While the decision not to spend money in the window is a pity, it is absolutely the correct decision. It’s just far too dangerous to speculate for success at this point. Dundalk fans are struggling to keep up with the often incessant schedule that the FAI have demanded. As has been said before, the decision to squash the League of Ireland season into such a tight timeframe may keep players contracts short but also leads to a fixture list that many fans

have difficulty keeping up with. The away support at Oriel Park has been mostly disappointing. In the recent Louth Derby, Drogheda United brought just 99 supporters up the M1. Who would have believed that we would just attract 576 spectators to the Galway FAI Cup match a few weeks ago? And 10% of those gate receipts went to the FAI with a Galway entitled to 40% of the balance. After match expenses Dundalk barely had anything left to put in the bank.

There is a tendency for people to switch off when the club makes statements relating to finance. But the fact is, we have a lot of things in our favour. In particular, Ian Foster has the team playing attractive positive football. Football fans who know the game will appreciate what is on offer on a match night in Oriel. The club is a good place to be around and there is no air of panic or crisis. There is a lot of information in tonight’s magazine and on dundalkfc.com about different fundraisers such the Liverpool Legends match. These are absolutely crucial. But the simple fact is that the most important fundraisers occur every second Friday night. If you are reading this it is likely that you are a part of the club’s core support – we all need to reach out to the people who pick and choose their games or are liable to decide against coming up to Oriel Park on account of the weather or other small things. Some people just need a push. We all know several people who fit the bill – ring them, text them, tweet them, do whatever we can to raise the priority of matchnights in Oriel in people’s lives. Let’s not just accept these low crowds. The club deserves better! Colm Murphy Dundalk FC Magazine editor dundalkfc.com 05

KICK-OFF DUNDALK v GALWAY UNITED

GOOD EVENING and welcome to Oriel Park for tonight’s Airtricity League Premier Division game versus Galway United. Firstly, I would like to welcome Seán Connor, his players and backroom staff, the directors and supporters of Galway United who have made the long trip east this evening.

‘‘

I’m putting these notes together before last Tuesday’s trip to Shamrock Rovers. Going back to our last home games against Drogheda United and Saint Patrick’s Athletic, the performance against the latter is what I’ve come to expect from our players. I think what was refreshing and reassuring was the fact that the fans stayed and clapped the players off the pitch because they could see the effort and the endeavour that they had put into the game. I think ultimately it was a game where we were carrying both centre-halves; Dean Bennett and Colin Hawkins had identical ankle injuries.

The best advice at the best price on motor, shop and house insurance hurt Drogheda and that was disappointing. We didn’t play with the urgency and the speed that we need to, to shift teams about and create chances. We got sloppy on the night but, like I said, we put in a better effort against St. Pat’s, and the lads will be aware that if they come off it again tonight that Galway will no doubt get a result. We’re not good enough to pick and choose what games we’re going to perform in to get results; we have to be at our best every time we take to the pitch or otherwise teams will beat us.

’’

I had a wonderful time in Galway. Everybody at the football club were really, really good to me. I’ll be forever grateful to the directors and the chairman, John McCormack, for giving me my first chance as a manager. They showed great faith in me; I was 32 years of age when I took over and it was a wonderful learning curve. It’s not nice to see the predicament they’re in but it’s difficult times all over the place. We’re all suffering

Michael Hector ...we wish him all the best in the future

Both were struggling to ‘get out’, but without a defender on the bench it was very difficult to change things. It wasn’t down to those two boys that the result changed so quickly, but it certainly didn’t help us.

We just have to all stick together now. The injuries have become an issue, but we’re still good enough to put in performances like that. Hopefully, we can see games out a little bit better or a little bit stronger. We were due to travel to Bray Wanderers last Friday but it was obviously postponed due to a waterlogged pitch at the Carlisle Grounds, and I think it was a blessing really. Shane Guthrie came back into the squad but Dean and Colin hadn’t fully recovered from their injuries, so we were pleasantly surprised and pleased that the game was called off. Obviously, it’s going to be a quick turnaround with the game re-fixed for Tuesday 28 June, and it’s one that we’ll look forward to. Looking at tonight, it’s never easy playing against a team that are fighting for their lives, like we found against Drogheda. My players came off it, in fairness to them for the first time this season, and they got found wanting. Even in the Drogheda game, we dominated possession, but we didn’t really 06 FROM THE SIDELINES: IAN FOSTER

financially; gates are down and sponsorship is down. And, as I found in Galway, attendances are always a problem. Even when the team was doing really well, I don’t think the gates were what we have in Dundalk, and it’s a shame, because it’s a wonderful city. I just don’t know how you get the supporters in through the turnstiles. There is a lot goes on in Galway; the festivals, the Gaelic sports and also the rugby. It’s a very sporty city; it’s just unfortunate that there aren’t enough people going to Terryland Park.

Finally, I would like to thank Michael Hector for, first of all, coming to play for Dundalk. It was a huge step for an 18-year-old kid leaving his club, his country and going into digs with lads he didn’t particularly know, in a league he didn’t know about. He showed a lot of courage coming over. He was a wonderful part of the squad, a fantastic young talent and we’re all desperately disappointed to see him leave, but we wish him all the best in the future. Enjoy the game! KICK-OFF DUNDALK v GALWAY UNITED

Barry Kehoe Soccer School: Participants pictured with Ian Foster (above, right) and Dean Arrowsmith, Ma GOOD EVENING everyone and welcome to Oriel Park for tonight’s Airtricity League Premier Division game against Galway United. It is a pleasure to welcome the Galway United manager, Sean Connor, his players and staff as well as the club officials and supporters to Dundalk for this evening’s game.

As I am writing these notes in advance of last Tuesday night’s round of Premier Division matches, Galway currently find themselves at the foot of the Airtricity League Premier Division table, three points behind Drogheda United. This is the fourth time that we have played Galway United this season and of course we just played them three weeks ago in the third round of the FAI Ford Cup. While we have been successful in winning our three previous league encounters against the Connacht side this season, Ian and the players know that they will have to be at their best to take all three league points on offer tonight. From our point of view we have unfortunately had a poor run over the last few league games. As I am penning this piece in advance of our trip to Tallaght to play Shamrock Rovers last Tuesday night, hopefully we have now reversed our run of three league defeats and have got a result in that game. With a small squad and a terrible time with injuries,

08 CLUB & COMMUNITY

I guess that it was inevitable that we were going to hit a rocky patch at some stage during the league season. However as I’ve said many times previously in football, the next game is the only one that matters and we must look to get another unbeaten league run going again and start climbing the league table.

With last Friday night’s game against Bray Wanderers at the Carlisle Ground called off, it has given an opportunity to players to have a bit of a rest and refresh themselves for this week’s matches.

We were handed a really tough draw in the fourth round of the FAI Ford Cup against Drogheda United at Hunky Dorys Park. We have been unlucky in the Cup draws this year, drawing Airtricity League Premier Division opposition in both rounds. While the game against Drogheda is some way off (we will already have played them in Hunky Dorys Park in our scheduled league game on 12 August) it will certainly set the pulses racing as the game approaches. With the transfer window opening in July, the Board have been in discussion with Ian about the possibility of taking in some new players to the club. As it stands we are not in a position to increase our playing budget for the rest of the

season. While this is unfortunate, we have to be very realistic as the money simply isn’t available to add to the squad at the moment. That’s the financial reality we find ourselves. Club finances are extremely Pádraig McGowan tight and we have to manage the club in that light. We have a number of high profile fund raising events planned and the first of these is the visit of the Liverpool legends in Saturday 23 July. This will be an opportunity for all local soccer fans to come out and see the past heroes of Liverpool FC in action, and of course the presence of our own Stephen Staunton in the Liverpool line-up will only add to the occasion. This is a very important fundraising opportunity for Dundalk FC and we would ask that all soccer fans in the town support this event. Yours in sport, & c’mon the Lilywhites! KICK-OFF DUNDALK v GALWAY UNITED

Action man: Simon Madden has been an ever-present this season and from what he has seen, the Dund IT WAS DISAPPOINTING to recently lose our long unbeaten home record. Our form here at Oriel Park was our base for pushing up the table. We had been very strong here and it was extremely disappointing to lose our last two games, especially against Drogheda United in a local derby. Our performance wasn’t good enough in that game, we weren’t at the races and we didn’t really deserve to get anything out of it.

But against Saint Patrick’s Athletic I thought it was one of our better displays at home. Especially in the first half, we had a couple cleared off the line and we should have been ahead at the break. It just didn’t go in for us. We got the goal then about ten minutes into the second half but I don’t know what happened after that; for last 20 minutes or so we just fell apart. Tonight, we will try to get back on track. However, despite Galway United’s poor run of results we know that we will have to enter the game with the right attitude and be professional in how we go about it. Hopefully, we can start another long unbeaten home run, which we need to do to climb up the table.

10 DRESSING ROOM

This is Galway’s second visit in less than three weeks after our FAI Ford Cup tie on 5 June. But that result will mean nothing now. I thought it was a great performance on the day and we’ll be looking for more of the same this evening. Going 1-0 down was a surprise and I don’t think we deserved that. It came out of nowhere. I think had we scored first it could have opened the gates. But we got a great response from the boys and it was good to go in 2-1 up at half-time. I think we were comfortable in the game. I don’t think they really stretched us or had many chances. I don’t think Peter Cherrie. It was a comfortable win. We had a few players missing at the back but I thought we defended well when we needed to.

People spoke about complacency being an issue against Drogheda but I don’t think we will have to worry about that tonight. Going into the Drogheda game, maybe our attitudes weren’t right, I’m not sure. But we know against Galway that we have to win and that nothing less than three points will do. Injuries are killing us at the moment. It’s not

‘‘

’’

dalk skipper believes his teammates have the ability to rebound from the disappointments of late making excuses but injuries really are killing us in the last few games. All season, we have had a lot of injuries and we just can’t seem to get a full squad for games. In every game we play we seem to pick up one injury, maybe two, and Simon Madden we’re going into games with players not fully fit. We’re struggling, but we have got to keep going – there’s nothing else we can do. Personally, I feel fresh (after playing every minute of the season so far). I don’t feel tired; it’s only the middle of the season, you shouldn’t be feeling tired yet. I just love playing every minute. I don’t want to be rested. I just want to play every game. The mood has always been good in the camp. I’m putting these notes together before last Tuesday’s trip to Tallaght Stadium, so looking at the results before that we

have all been disappointed. But we know as a team that we can play better, we have done, and that we can pick up points anywhere we play. The games keep coming thick and fast, and we have another big one next Tuesday in the re-fixed game away to Bray Wanderers. I think it’s important to start beating the teams around us, and hopefully we can do that.

Finally, we’re all disappointed to have lost Michael Hector, whose loan will not be extended. Michael was a big influence on the team, he played really well when he came in, and everyone would like to wish him all the best in his future career. For us, we have got to move on from it, stick together as a team and hopefully get back in form over the coming weeks.

Enjoy the game!

WHO AM I?

1 In which city will next seasonʼs UEFA Europa League final be staged? 2 Which team will Shamrock Rovers play in this seasonʼs UEFA Champions League second qualifying round? 3 Name the two teams currently propping up the Airtricity League first division standings? 4 Which team won the 2010/11 Austrian league championship? 5 Who is the manager of Swansea City? 6 Who is the caretaker manager at Waterford United? 7 How many international appearances did John Aldridge make for the Republic of Ireland? 8 Name any of the three clubs recently promoted to the French top flight? 9 How many top flight league titles have Arsenal won? 10 Giovanni Trapattoni coached two clubs to win the UEFA Cup, can you name them?

I was born in Pato Branco in the late 1980s and started playing indoor football at the age of three. Soon, I became known around my home state of Paraná for being skilful and a talented goalscorer. I travelled to Porto Alegre to try out for Gremio, the club I supported as a boy, but I was unsuccessful there. Local rivals Internacional tried to convince me to instead play for them, and despite the two clubs being bitter enemies, my parents persuaded me to join ʻColoradoʼ. When I was 11, I broke my arm and while examining the injuries, doctors found a tumour in the arm and feared that it would have to be amputated. But a successful operation removed the tumour. In June 2006, at 16 years of age, I was signed by Internacional to compete in the Campeonato Brasileiro Sub-20. I became a prolific goalscorer and finished at the top of the goalsʼ charts as we beat Gremio 4-0. I made my first-team debut later that year against Palmeiras, and I scored my first pro goal within the first minute of the game, while I added two assists in a 4-1 win. I was part of the squad that then won the FIFA Club World Cup. During that event, I broke Peleʼs record as I became the youngest ever player to score in a FIFA-organised competition. I joined AC Milan in January 2008 and, days later, again ANSWERS AT THE BOTTOM OF THIS PAGE scored on my debut, against Napoli in a 5-2 home win. Who Am I?

Galway United have not won at Oriel Park since April 2004 when late goals from Dave Goldbey and John Russell secured a 3-1 win in first division fare. The sides’ first league encounter at Oriel was on 6 November 1977. Since that, they have met in Oriel on 29 times in the top flight and Dundalk have lost just once. That came in the last league game of the 1986/87 season, the Lilywhites having already secured second place and guaranteed European football for the following season.

CAPTAIN

Greg Fleming

Greg Fleming (born: 27 Sep 86), an Edinburgh-born ‘keeper, began his career with Livingston in 2004 but failed to make a first-team appearance. The next summer, he moved to Gretna and became a regular between the sticks during the club’s season in the Scottish Premier League. During October 2007, his contract was extended and he was selected for Scotland U21s. But, the next May, he was among 40 staff released by Gretna due to financial woes. Within two days, he had signed a three-year deal with Oldham Athletic. Last July, Fleming was transfer-listed but it was not until 31 January last that he was released, later signing for Galway United. 24 OPPONENTS

Paul Sinnott

Paul Sinnott (born: 24 Jul 86) is a Galway-born defender who spent time playing Youth and Junior football at Renmore and Mervue United. He signed for Galway United in 2008 and made his debut during that season, making two outings. He continued to make progress the next year, under manager Ian Foster, by making 15 appearances. Last year, Sinnott finally nailed down a starting place, making 34 appearances, and his displays led to Seán Connor handing him the captain’s armband ahead of this season. Outside of football, Sinnott, who is comfortable at either right-back of centre-half, is a keen Connacht Rugby fan.

Brian Cash

Brian Cash (born: 24 Nov 82) is a Dublin-born midfielder who spent five years at Nottingham Forest having moved to England in 1999. From Forest, he enjoyed loan spells at Swansea City and Rochdale, before joining Bristol Rovers on non-contract terms in late 2004. He would go on to play just one game for The Pirates, coming on as a sub on 79 minutes and then being subbed himself in a match against Northampton Town in January 2005. Later that year, he joined Derry City, and in 2007 he signed for Sligo Rovers where he spent three seasons. In January 2010, he signed for St Patrick’s, but after just one season there he moved to Galway.

GALWAY UNITED MANAGER

Sean Connor

Sean Connor’s career took in Distillery, Port Vale, Macclesfield, Ards and Cliftonville before injury ended his playing days. He then began an unconventional career path towards management. He spent some time as Birmingham City press officer before coaching in the US and in English non-league circles. He spent some time scouting for Stoke and Lincoln before returning to Ireland as manager at First Division Sligo Rovers in 2004. Within 15 months he had led Sligo to promotion and in their first season back in the top flight Rovers finished an impressive fifth. He moved to Bohemians and though he led then to third place in the League, the FAI Cup semis and the League Cup final the club terminated his contract at the end of the 2007 season amid rumours of off-field improprieties. Bohs were eventually forced to settle a court case for wrongful dismissal. Connor then replaced John Gill at newly-promoted Dundalk for the 2009 campaign, where 23 red cards blighted a fifth-placed finish. Club and manager went their separate ways for 2010, with Connor ending up at Galway, and maintaining the club’s top flight status on the pitch thanks to a play-off defeat of Bray. But licensing issues have left him short on time to field a team for the 2011 season.

ONE TO WATCH

Stephen Walsh

Stephen Walsh (born: 29 Aug 90) is a Galway-born defender who can also play in attack, as shown last season when he scored on his full debut against Dundalk at Terryland. And it was towards the end of the 2010 campaign that he began to make a breakthrough into Seán Connor’s team. Walsh had previously played for Galway Hibs before signing for United. He made a total of 15 appearances for the Tribesmen last term, but so impressive were his displays that he earned the club’s Young Player of the Year award. MNS viewers may remember Walsh from last October as he scored a spectacular long-range goal away to Sporting Fingal.

Steve Feeney

Steve Feeney (born: 16 May 84) is a Sligo-born defender who arrived on the League of Ireland scene with his local club Sligo Rovers, who he first joined in 1999. He played a key role in Seán Connor’s side that won the First Division title and promotion to the top flight in 2005. In July 2006, he moved to Athlone Town before joining Monaghan United ahead of the 2007 season. He returned to Sligo in 2008, but found it difficult to break into the team on a regular basis, and he left to join local Junior club Quayside Rovers. Last January, he signed for Galway United, making his debut in the opening-day defeat by St Patrick’s on 4 March.

Shaun Kelly

Shaun Kelly (born: 9 Mar 89) will be a familiar face to Dundalk fans having spent the last two seasons at the club. The Donegal-born defender played at local club Saint Catherine’s alongside Everton’s Séamus Coleman before moving to Scottish club Heart of Midlothian in 2005, at the age of 16. But he failed to get into to the first-team squad, although he did appear in some friendlies and was involved in the Youth and Reserve sides. In January 2009, after interest from Raith Rovers and Finn Harps, he landed at Oriel and was a consistent performer in his 70 outings for Dundalk. He has recently been linked with a move to Australia. dundalkfc.com 25

MATCHDAY OPPONENTS

Do you come here often? This is Galway United’s 42nd competitive trip to Oriel since they joined the league in 1977. On their last trip here, on 5 June, Dundalk won 4-1 in FAI Cup action. The Tribesmen took the lead through Alan Murphy, but Dundalk restored parity via Dean Bennett and went on with goals from Johnny Breen, Mark Quigley (penalty) and Daniel Kearns. Galway’s first visit to Oriel Park - as Galway Rovers came on 6 November 1977 and resulted in a 2-0 win for Dundalk, with Jimmy Redfern getting both goals.

Having become a first-team regular, he earned a move to Fulham in late 1997. But he struggled to make an impact there and returned to Bohs the next September. He had a wonderful 2000/01 season as Bohs clinched the League & Cup double. He also scored against Aberdeen in the UEFA Cup. He then joined Bournemouth where he stayed until December 2007. He then played for Drogheda and Sporting Fingal, where he won the FAI Cup in 2009, before joining Galway earlier this year. 26 OPPONENTS

Bobby Ryan

Bobby Ryan (born: 1 Jan 79) is a Limerick-born winger who has two top flight medals to his name having won the league with Bohemians (2002/03) and Shelbourne (2006). He began his career with the Geraldine’s in his home city before playing for both Limerick and Galway United, his displays earning him a move to Bohs in January 2002. His superb form in the 02/03 season ended by scoring the goal that gave Bohs the title in early ‘03. Ahead of the 2005 season, he moved to Shels, and won the title in 2006. Then came a poor spell at Dunfermline and since returning, he has spent time at St Patrick’s, Galway (twice) and Limerick.

Gary Curran

Gary Curran (born: 22 Sep 87) is a Sligo-born midfielder who began his career with local club Real Tubber, where he played alongside Raffaele Cretaro. After making his way through the Sligo Rovers youth ranks, he made his first senior appearance for the club in 2004. Also that year, he made his full U18 international debut for the Republic of Ireland. He was part of the promotionwinning side of 2005. He left Sligo at the end of the 2008 season, going on to join Longford Town. He netted four goals, but was released and returned to the top flight in February 2010 when he signed for Galway, scoring three times in 31 outings.

Renewing acquaintances... PLAYED FOR BOTH Shane Guthrie is the only current Dundalk player to have played for Galway. He spent the 2009 season at Terryland. Of the Galway squad, Shaun Kelly enjoyed two strong seasons at Dundalk in 2009 and 2010 before Sean Connor signed him for Galway at the start Garry Breen of the season. Managers Ian Foster and Sean Connor swapped clubs ahead of the 2010 season. Plenty of players have played for both clubs over the years including Dundalk legends Richie Blackmore, Eddie Van Boxtel, Larry Wyse and Joey Malone, and more recently Garry Breen, Thomas Heary and Anto Flood.

STAR PLAYER

Alan Murphy

Alan Murphy (born: 3 Oct 81) is a Galway-born striker/central midfielder who began his career with Galway United in 1998. He remained there until 2004 when – after ending as top scorer in the First Division with 21 goals – he moved to Derry City. The first of 11 goals for Derry came in the third league game with the winner at home to Shamrock Rovers, one of 59 outings for the club. He returned to Galway in 2006 and – bar a brief spell with Rovers in 2008 – he has been there since, and is now the club’s second highest all-time scorer behind Paul ‘Ski’ McGee. He has represented the Republic of Ireland at Schools and U18 level.

Sean Kelly

Seán Kelly (born: 9 Jul 87) is a Kerry-born midfielder who was an Irish Youth international that spent time at Arsenal, where he was released from at the end of the 2005/06 season. He had previously played for Kingdom Boys, a Kerry-based Youth club. In 2007, he signed for Cork City, where he had five league outings during the 2008 season. In 2009, Ian Foster brought him to Galway United and he was an almost ever-present as they preserved their top flight status. Last year, he moved to Limerick where he was a regular before he returned to top-flight football with Galway for 2011. He has represented Ireland at both U19 and U21 level.

GALWAY UNITED LEGEND

Noel Mernagh

Mernagh featured 333 times for the Tribesmen, a record holder in that regard for the club. A midfielder, he was part of Galway’s 1991 FAI Cup winning team, both League Cup winning sides (85/86 and 96/97) and won promotion (and the First Division Shield) with United in 1993.

Originally signed by Paddy Mulligan from local side West United in 1982, Mernagh also played up front and at the back in his 13 years at the club. He would also play in all three of Galway’ European campaigns and featured in Galway’s strongest sides that pushed for the league title 1986 and 1994. Later, he was one of four Galway men who helped St Pats to the league title and FAI Cup final in 1996. He returned to Galway for the subsequent season and was assistant manager firstly under Denis Clarke and then Don O'Riordan until 1999. He continued to play for the club but a broken leg ultimately forced him to call time, and after a short spell as coach of West United in 1999, Mernagh drifted away from the football scene.

DUNDALK’S disappointing Shield campaign came to a close at Oriel Park with a 8-3 win over Transport. Dundalk finished second last in the table having secured just three wins.

Dundalk opened the scoring after four minutes when Kit Lawlor scored from Patsy McKeown’s pass. Murphy equalised for Transport with a good shot inside the far upright after 20 minutes. Ten minutes later Munroe put Dundalk ahead again, and this was followed by further efforts by Leo McDonagh and Munroe’s second. Marshall got Transport’s second before the break to make the halftime score 4-2. Kelly got Dundalk’s fifth four minutes after the re-start. Munroe completed his hat-trick after 63 minutes. Dundalk completed the scoring from Lawlor and Martin. Murphy scored his second for Transport in the final moments from the penalty spot.

Most of the Ireland team had played just 24 hours earlier. Charlie Hurley, for example, arrived by boat and managed to snatch two hours sleep before the match.

However, the Irish eventually woke from their slumber to mount a comeback. While Hurley earned the plaudits, 19 year old Johnny Giles also received the adulation of the national press and the supporters for his display. Giles started the comeback with a 25 yard volley past Nyholm. After 24 minutes Giles floated in a delightful cross for Haverty to cut back for Curtis to make it 2-2. 2006 champions: Shelbourne...but that’s only half the story...

2006: DUNDALK

New manager John Gill was under pressure straight away as Dundalk lost their first four league games. Four wins fired by the goals of Phillip Hughes and Peter Hynes suggested that Dundalk could compete, but another three straight losses seemed to have ended Dundalk’s season in May. A remarkable, spirited 20 game unbeaten run saw Dundalk reach the coat-tails of Shamrock Rovers and Galway. Any hope of topping the table ahead of Rovers went by the wayside in a late 1-0 defeat at bogey team Monaghan, but Dundalk held Galway off to finish second and qualify for the playoff, which they duly won against a Waterford side that had failed badly in the Premier. That was not enough though. In a vain attempt to put some structure and discipline on the league the FAI initiated an Independent Assessment Group to select the Premier Division. Shamefully Dundalk were excluded. 30 SEASONPAST

Galway United

Galway were involved in a three-way battle for the First Division title with Dundalk and Shamrock Rovers. A crucial late season defeat at home to Dundalk conceded ground in the title race and Galway ultimately finished third. The lack of a prolific goalscorer may appear to have cost Galway, with Barry Moran the club's top scorer with just 11 league goals, but United were the division’s joint top scorers with Dundalk. A surfeit of draws was more costly - Galway lost just five league games, compared to Dundalk’s nine, but drew twelve to Dundalk’s five. Not that a third place finish mattered, ultimately. Galway’s IAG presentation was probably the best prepared and most creative of all 22 clubs. With off-field criteria as important as on-field results, Galway’s case was based on optimistic but semi-plausible financial projections. It was enough to bluff their way into the Premier Division.

Irish Football

One of the most extraordinary seasons in Irish football history ended as a complete and utter shambles. Dublin City folded during the season. After much argument the results of their games were expunged, with Shelbourne threatening legal action as title rivals Derry had effectively been ‘forgiven’ for dropping points against them. Shels were busy threatening legal action against Derry and demanding a match versus Bohemians to be replayed. They ultimately topped the table but the reason for their desperation soon became apparent. At the end of the season all Shels’ players were released as they were owed wages. Shels had their Premier licence revoked ahead of the 2007 season. Remarkably the IAG process completed failed to notice Shelbourne’s financial difficulties. More remarkably still Shelbourne were allowed to retain the 2006 league title after being relegated!

Shamrock Rovers were deducted three points for fielding an ineligible player. Dundalk won the twolegged playoff 3-2 on aggregate against Waterford United, but still didn’t get promoted (long story). In the premier, Shelbourne triumphed, denying Derry City on goal difference. Dublin City folded (and finished bottom), while Waterford still got relegated.

European Football

Cork City produced a fine UEFA Champions League performance to eliminated the seeded Cypriot side Apollon Limassol. Billy Woods got the only goal of the game at Turner’s Cross and a Dan Murray header secured a 1-1 in the heat of Cyprus. Cork’s achievement is underlined by the fact that several Apollon players were involved in Cyprus’s 5-2 win over Ireland soon after. The Leesiders progressed to meet Red Star Belgrade, losing 4-0 on aggregate. In the UEFA Cup Drogheda beat HJK Helsinki before losing out to Sweden’ IK Start 11-10 on penalties after the longest shootout in European football history. Derry beat IFK Gothenburg home and away and thrashed Scotland’s Gretna. Derry’s 5-1 win at Mothewell’s Fir Park was the biggest home defeat ever suffered by a Scottish team in Europe. Derry then held Paris St Germain to a scoreless draw at home before losing 2-0 in Paris.

International Football

Dundalk native and Republic of Ireland legend Stephen Staunton was the surprise selection as new Ireland manager. Staunton got off to a winning start, with an ebullient Ireland sweeping Sweden away in a 3-0 friendly win in March. Friendly defeats at home to Chile and Holland - a comprehensive 4-0 defeat hinted at difficulties ahead. Ireland opened their UEFA Euro 2008 campaign away to a buoyant Germany side which has just finished third at the FIFA World Cup. Staunton and Ireland performed adequately, going down to a single, deflected Lukas Podolski strike. The knives were out, though, after Staunton’s second competitive game. Ireland produced a dismal display in a catastrophic 5-2 thrashing in Cyprus. Some pride was restored in a solid draw at home to Czech Republic before Ireland rounded off the year with a 5-0 thrashing of San Marino in the last international match at the old Lansdowne Road.

The 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany was notable for its tactical sophistication but also for its defensiveness. A 4-4-2 formation, or any sign of two recognised strikers on the one team was a novelty. While there was a goal glut early in the finals that dried up dramatically later on, with the 15 knockout matches up to the final yielding just 26 goals. Germany’s Miroslav Klose was the tournament’s top scorer with just five goals - the lowest total to win the Golden Boot since 1962. Defenders were some of the stars of the show, with the likes of Lahm, Grosso, Cannavaro, Zambrotta, Carvalho, Nuno Valente, Abidal and Thuram standing out. Switzerland achieving the distinction of going home without conceding a goal. There were moments of entertainment too. Argentina, Germany and Brazil entertained at times, while Ribery, Zidane, Maxi Rodriguez and Totti injecting some much needed panache. dundalkfc.com 31

Philip Hughes

2006: DUNDALK STAR

Philip Hughes enjoyed probably his finest season in the League of Ireland. The exquisitely talented Dubliner scored 21 league goals for Dundalk, breaking Martin Reilly’s club record. Hughes’ intelligent link-up play and finely crafted finishing were key to Dundalk’s rise up the table. He scored regularly through the season, including nine in seven games as Dundalk overhauled Galway. Hughes began his career at Tolka Rovers, joining League of Ireland St St James’s Gate in 2001. He soon moved to Pats, Kilkenny, Kildare, Dublin City, UCD and Monaghan, sporadically setting the league alight. Hughes struggled to regain his 2006 form in a disappointing 2007 season and subsequently continued to his tour of the First Division with Shelbourne, Kildare, Monaghan and Shels again. 32 SEASONPAST

Alan Keane

GALWAY UNITED STAR

Versatile young defender Alan Keane was a key component of Galway United’s defence in 2006. The Galway native was generally deployed at right back but was adaptable enough to fill in anywhere across the back or on the right wing. In 2006 Keane was voted Galway United’s Young Player of the Year for a second successive season as United pushed Dundalk and Shamrock Rovers for the title.

After four seasons at Terryland Park the former Mervue United man moved on to join Sligo Rovers. An FAI Cup winner (despite missing a penalty in the shootout in the final against Shamrock Rovers) and League Cup winner with Sligo in 2010, he is now well established at right back in the Sligo rearguard.

2006

Shay Given

IRISH INTERNATIONAL STAR

Newcastle United goalkeeper Shay Given was in fine form for club and country. The dependable Donegal man played all of Newcastle’s 38 Premier League games in the 2005/06 season, captaining Newcastle on occasion when Alan Shearer was injured. He was named on the Premier League Team of the Season as he matured into one of the finest keepers in the game, eliminating the occasional high profile errors that had blemished his earlier career. Newcastle underlined their faith in Given in 2006, granting him a five-year extension to his contract. An injury sustained in September spared Given the trip to Cyprus, with Paddy Kenny deputising in the 5-2 defeat. He has gone on to become Ireland’s most capped player.

Fabio Cannavaro

SUPERSTAR!

33-year-old World Cup winning captain Fabio Cannavaro became the oldest winner of the FIFA World Player of the Year award, and the only defender to win the award in its 19 year history. In a noticeably defensive World Cup Cannavaro was the star performer, leading Italy, who conceded just two goals in seven games, to victory. Cannavaro’s determination, impeccable timing and superb tackling more than compensated for his relatively lack of height, at five-foot-nine. The former Napoli ball boy graduated to play for his hometown team before moving to Parma and Inter, eventually joining Juventus in 2004. At Juve he won two Serie A titles (subsequently revoked). Cannavaro joined Real Madrid after the World Cup, winning two La Liga titles. dundalkfc.com 33

Larry Wyse

PLAYING WITH Dundrumbased Beaumont Schoolboys team, just down the road from Milltown, it was no surprise that Shamrock Rovers was Larry Wyse’s first senior club. Under Sean Thomas he had collected his first competition honour when the Hoops defeated Sligo Rovers in the final of the 1976/77 League Cup. But the appointment of Johnny Giles as manager and the arrival of a clutch of experienced players like Eamonn Dunphy and Paddy Mulligan, saw the Milltown departure of Larry after two months of the new regime.

Shortly after Sean Thomas was appointed manager of Athlone Town, in October 1977, Larry was one of several ex-Rovers to head for the Midlands. Harry McCue would take the same route. For the next two seasons Athlone filled their usual middle of the table role, but the arrival of Turlough O’Connor in the summer of 1979 changed everything. 34 LILYWHITELEGEND

An opening season eightwins-on-the-trot delivered the Tyler All-Ireland Cup, after victories over Coleraine, Linfield, Shamrock Rovers and Drogheda in the twolegged final, with Larry pitching in three goals during the campaign. Before the season ended there was more silverware at St Mel’s Park—the League Cup—and there was also a runner up spot in the Leinster Senior Cup and a third place League finish, the highest in the club’s history. It got better the following year with Athlone’s first Championship pennant leading to Larry’s first European experience when Athlone gave an outstanding performance in the Champions Cup, losing out to KB Copenhagen on away goals after two drawn games and a 3-3 aggregate. By the end of the 1983/84 season, his seventh at St Mel’s Park, when Larry left Athlone, after a tiff with manager O’Connor, he had another Championship medal (1982/83) and had appeared in three more League Cup finals, taking home two more winners medals (81/82 and 82/83) and a runner up memento in 83/84.

He spent the next two years with Bohemians, but like the rest of the League teams, they were left in the slipstream of the Jim McLaughlin-bossed Shamrock Rovers, en route to four successive League Championships. By the time

he got a surprise call from Turlough O’Connor to join him again at Dundalk for the 86/87 season, he had added a League runner-up award to his growing honours collection for Bohs’ second spot in 84/85.

Coming to Oriel Park with Terry Eviston, they joined a growing colony of ex-Athlone players—already there were Roddy Collins, Joey Malone and Harry McCue—all completing O’Connor’s panel for a major assault on the top honours. His second odyssey under Turlough O’Connor was as productive as his first. Part of a midfield combination hailed by their many supporters as the best ever to represent the club, he had Martin Murray and Barry Kehoe as his partners and this trio played key roles in all the highlights from this era—the three-match FAI Cup semi-final victory over Bohemians in 86/87, the many memorable games during the League-Cup Double victory in 87/88, European matches against Ajax, Red Star Belgrade and Wettingen, a League runner up finish in 88/89 and two more League Cup awards, bringing his count of League Cup winners medals to six. He played a central role in the 1-0 1988 FAI Cup final victory over Derry City, securing the penalty kick in the 20th minute, converted by John Cleary, and with Kehoe and Murray, dominated the midfield area as Dundalk contained all of Derry’s efforts and won the Double.

Larry Wyse After four highly successful Oriel Park seasons, Larry accepted an offer from Joey Malone, newly appointed manager of Galway United, to spend his 15th League season (90/91) with his fifth club. What he didn’t bargain for was another FAI Cup winner’s medal.

While Dundalk were claiming another League Championship under Turlough O’Connor, Galway had recovered from a dreadful start—seven losses in their opening nine matches—to dispel relegation fears by early March and to sweep through the FAI Cup campaign to a final berth at Lansdowne Road against the Cup aristocrats Shamrock Rovers. Carrying an injury and cleared to play in the final only after a 45-minute pre-match work-out, he ensured that Galway matched Rovers in the vital midfield sector. A late winner from Johnny Glynn gave the Westerners their first major success and Larry pocketed his second FAI winner’s medal. Early in the following year when Galway drew Odense in the Cup Winners’ Cup he made his 16th European appearance — Athlone 4, Bohemians 4, Dundalk 6 and Galway 2 — spread across three competitions (Champions Cup 6, UEFA Cup 6 and Cup Winner’s Cup 4). His last and 17th league season was spent back at Athlone Town, now in the

First Division and under the management of Turlough O’Connor’s brother Micheal. When he scored his lone League goal in late March against Kilkenny City he was maintaining a remarkable record of scoring in each of his seventeen League of Ireland seasons. With five clubs he had made 436 League appearances alone

and had his name on 86 League goals. When he turned his hand to the management game he had one special moment when with Leinster Senior League Glenmore Celtic he delivered the Intermediate Cup in 1997, on the 50th anniversary of the club’s foundation, defeating Cork club Everton in the Turner’s Cross final.

Profile

Born in Dublin on 13 November 1956, Larry Wyse went on to make 436 appearances in a glittering League of Ireland career which spanned 17 seasons with five different clubs - Shamrock Rovers, Athlone Town (twice), Bohemians, Dundalk and Galway United. In total, he claimed 11 major domestic competition honours - three leagues, two FAI Cups and six League Cups - with six runners-up honours - three leagues, an FAI Cup and two League Cups. At Dundalk (1986 to 1990), he won the League and FAI Cup double in 1987/88, as well as two League Cups (86/87 and 89/90) and the 1988/89 President s Cup. He played 153 times for Dundalk, and scored 27 times, making 100 starts (plus four substitute appearances) in the league, netting 16 times in the process. Other outings and goals were: FAI Cup 18/5, European competition 6/0, League Cup 21/4, Leinster Senior Cup 2/2 and other matches 2/0. Wyse was twice the recipient of the Soccer Writers Player of the Month Award: his first in September 1983, while with Athlone Town, and his Dundalk honour came in January 1989. When nominated in 1978 for the Sunday Independent s Most Improved Player Award, he was described as has two good feet wants to play for 90 minutes is not selfish has good vision knows when to go forward and have a crack at goal and when to cover back.

GEORGE BRENNAN was a prominent GAA player with the Lannleire club in Dunleer during the 1940s. He had been a member of the County Louth team that won the All-Ireland Minor Championship in 1940, scoring two goals in the final victory over Co Mayo from the right corner forward position with future International Peter Corr as his right wing partner. In the 1946/47 season he was playing at inside right with the Dundalk Reserves but by 1948/49 he was Dundalk’s reserve goalkeeper. After the departure of Alex Anderson, following the 1949 FAI Cup success, George became first team netminder for the opening 26 games of the ‘49/50 season, and his performances earned a place on the League of Ireland team for its game against the Scottish League in October 1949, but because of an injury he was forced to cry off

HOMEGROWNTALENT

at the last minute. In January, he made way for Malachy Short and for the following season Walter Durkan joined them on the goalkeeping panel, at the end of which George and Walter travelled to North Wales on the club’s Festival of Britain Tour. During the summer George signed for Glenavon. While Durkan and his teammates were joining the Dundalk Hall of Fame with their 1952 FAI Cup success, George was a member of the successful Glenavon team, which became the first Provincial winners of the Irish League. The following December he suffered a serious injury playing in a Christmas game and his place taken by Walter Durkan. When he recovered Walter had nailed down the Glenavon No 1 jersey and George returned to Dundalk, competing with Eamon Darcy for first team duty.

In his last season with the club he had Kevin Mullen and Eddie McKenna as rivals but the arrival of Ted McNeill at the tail end of the season settled all the arguments. In August 2003, while in Dunleer on holidays from his Stockport home, he took ill and died in the Lourdes Hospital, Drogheda.

Profile

George Brennan played 74 times in goal for Dundalk between 1949 and 1955, with his closest brush with domestic honours coming in the 1949/50 President s Cup, where the Whites were on the losing end of a 2-1 result against Drumcondra. That would be Brennan s only appearance in that competition, his other 73 outings coming in the League (34), FAI Cup (5), Shield (20), City Cup (10) and Leinster Senior Cup (4). His most prolific season came in 1949/50 when he made 26 appearances, while other outings came in 1950/51 (eight appearances), 1953/54 (17) and 1954/55 (23).

THE MAN WITH ONE NAME: As a general rule football fans will use first names or nicknames to encourage a player and surnames to barrack, abuse or threaten. Not so with (Michael) Hector. D’Shed’s latest cult hero (until his recent recall from loan by Reading) is affectionately, and almost exclusively, referred to as ‘Hector’. Sadly one of the main reasons that our Hector is called simply Hector is the presence of another high profile one-name Hector in Irish society- that most risible of hyper-culchies, RTE’s beloved Hector Ó'hEochagáin. RTE Hector seems to get everywhere… and not in a good way, like Stephen Maher, but in a bad way, like cancer. Apologies to any Galway fans for whom RTE Hector is a hero, but I’ve got a cúpla focal for RTE Hector and one of them is ‘off ’. An dtuigeann tú? Anyway, back Dundalk’s number six, the real Hector. The Spectator is uncommonly proud of the fact that he has always thought of (Michael) Hector as just plain old Hector- because he could never remember his first name. For a long time the closest The Spectator could get to remembering his first name was Kevin, as in Kevin Hector, the England international and Derby County star of the 70s. But then again The Spectator has only just begun to accept the fact that Ross Gaynor is not Tommy Gaynor.

So just plain Hector it is - and what an apt name it is. Hector, as all of Oriel Park’s classical scholars will know, was the greatest hero of 38

Troy in Greek mythology. A fine and appropriate namesake, I think you’ll agree.

Reducing Hector to a single Brazilian-style name makes sense from a footballing point of view too. With his dynamic forays forward and his always entertaining contributions Hector deserves a Brazilian name. Continuing the theme (or flogging a dead horse), as The Spectator is prone to do, let’s see about Brazilian-ising some of the rest of the squad, for the craic. Bearing in mind that the suffix – inho means little or younger*, as in Ronaldinho is little Ronaldo, Jarizinho was little Jair etc, we’ll start by renaming our most Brazilian player. “Daniel Kearns” simply isn’t a sexy enough name. He shall be renamed Daninho. While –inho means little, the suffix –ão denotes large. Tostão, Falcão, Luisão... you get the picture. Six-foot-five Shane Guthrie surely deserves a name to match the stature. He shall henceforth be known as Guthrão. The joy of Brazilian naming conventions is that there are no conventions. You can just select a cool nickname and run with it…

SEAN DELOUGHRY CALLS (FULL) TIME!

Gone but not forgotten: (Michael) Hector

witness Dunga, Pelé, Careca, Rivaldo, Ronaldo, Romario, Vava, Garrincha, Bebeto, Hulk, Gerson, Sócrates and Zico. Less glamorous but equally memorable are the likes of Brazilian internationals Alex, Fred, Jo, Alan and Cris. With this in mind The Spectator is officially unofficially renaming half our squad. You can spend half time working out who’s who. Or go for a pint, if you’re that way inclined.

Anyhow….. in addition to the aforementioned Hector, Daninho and Guthrão I hereby introduce Quiglinho, Hawk, Cherrião, Griff, Wardinho, Spud and Johnnybrinho, under the management team of Fozinho and Darius. Dundalk, it’s just like watching Brazil, hey. (*Incidentally similar use of the – “inho” suffix would be wisely employed at Terryland Park. Galway are currently giving statisticians, including the anorak wearing Spectator, nightmares with the presence of Seán Kelly and Shaun Kelly in their squad. Surely the former Dundalk full back Shaun Kelly could be renamed “Kellinho” in the interest of consistent and accurate stats? For God’s sake, won’t someone think of the stats?)
