Moose Lake Area Rebels

Coach: Co-head coaches Reilly Fawcett, second season, and Chris Gamst, fourth season

2020-21 record: 8-11

Conference: Independent

Section: Section 7A

Key returners: Sr. F Gabby Gamst (8-8—16); fr. F Sandra Ribich (9-5—14); sr. D Raechel Painovich (3-9—12); fr. D Hallie Klavu (4-5—9)

New faces to watch:

7th D Jenna Jusczak; 7th F Autumn Painovich

Outlook: The Rebels only lost three seniors from last year and return all their top scorers and both goalies, so there is plenty of optimism to go around. In addition to the two seventh graders, the Rebels also gained Adeline Schmidt, who was a familiar face in the program but missed the past couple years due to a snowboarding accident. “We are excited to have these newcomers in our high school program and we look forward to working with them and developing them,” Fawcett said. The program is struggling for numbers, with 22 girls for JV and varsity combined, meaning many varsity players will have to play at least a period of JV. That’s a concern because of the increased risk of injury and fatigue. “We don’t want them running out of gas during the JV games and then having that affect the varsity games, but this is something that our girls have been doing the past couple of years and are used to,” Fawcett said. Fawcett, the former News Tribune All-Area Player of the Year who went on to play at Bemidji State and professionally, would like to build the Rebels in the mold of her old program, Proctor-Hermantown. While it may have added challenges, she knows what the foundation will be.

“Our team is determined to be the hardest-working team on the ice,” she said. “We might not be as skilled as other teams, but we take pride in outworking our opponents. We also have a great group of girls and strong leadership throughout each grade level.

“We are very excited about this year. We are excited to have fans back in the stands and being able to play in front of our friends and families again. Our goal is to make it to the section final game and earn a trip to the state tournament. Our mentality that will lead us to this goal is to get better every single day and trust the process.”

Hibbing-Chisholm Bluejackets

(1-1—2)

New faces to watch: Jr. D Maddie St. George, fr. D Kendal Gustavsson, fr. F Panella Rewertz

Outlook: The Bluejackets return their top six scorers, as well as good goaltending with Hess, so it’s hard to not be optimistic. The veteran Hyduke said strengths of his team are their hard working and positive nature but the biggest challenge will be developing depth.
