Duluth Marshall Hilltoppers

Coach: Amanda Boulier, second season

2020-21 record: 14-5

Conference: Lake Superior

Section: Section 7A

Key departures: D Maren Friday (22-23—45, All-Area First Team); G Charlesa Prior (13-4, 1.41 GAA .926 save percentage, All-Area Second Team); F Amelia McGiffert (8-5—13)

Key returners: Sr. F Kendra Royer (5-11—16); jr. F Meredith Boettcher (17-22—39, AllArea Second Team); so. F Ilsa Lindaman (14-14—28); fr. F Nina Thorson (6-8—14); jr. F Danica Mark (4-10—14)

New faces to watch: Sr. F Annika Lindgren, so. G Chloe Clark, fr. D Avery Lian

Outlook: The Hilltoppers return their two leading scorers on offense in Boettcher and Lindaman, and with the arrival of Lindgren, who had four goals and 11 assists for the Duluth Northern Stars last winter, the Hilltoppers will rely on their deep offensive group. Boulier called her team “a creative, crafty bunch to watch out for this season.”

Despite graduating a couple of blue chippers — Friday was a three-time All-Area First Team selection, now playing NCAA

Division I hockey at Union College in Schenectady, New York, and Prior is playing at Lawrence University in Appleton, Wisconsin — all is not lost. Marshall returns four of its top six players from its defensive corps and Boulier expects them to anchor the Hilltoppers with their strength and experience. Marshall got off to a great start with a seasonopening 4-2 home win over Breck Saturday, Nov. 13; while Breck might not be the same team the Mustangers once were, going 7-12 in 2020-21 against a tough schedule, they won three straight Class A titles from 2018-20.
