Herterattributesthis achievement tothe players and their mature, respectfulbehavior.
“Ninety percent of them being successful has to do with what kind of kids theyare.They are good hockeyplayers, but they areunreal kids,” he said.
The assistant coach said another majorfactor is theentertainment value of Bulldogsgames.
“It’s atotal fan experience,”hesaid.“We have avariety of local kids, NorthernMinnesotaboys, on our hockey team,whichI think peopleenjoy. They areyoung and enthusiastic.”
Herteralso calledout theenergyatAMSOIL Arena,inadditiontothe sightlines for fans. Also,hesaidthe fans’ access to Lake Superior, Canal Park and downtownDuluth –all coming togetherfor an entire game-dayexperience–helps ensure theysee success.

It’s been quiteayearfor the University of Minnesota Duluth’s men’s hockeyteam.
Back in April, the Bulldogs toppedNotre Dame2-1 in the Men’s NCAAFrozen Four Championship gameatthe XcelEnergyCenter inSt. Paul. In front of more than 18,000 fans, the team celebratedtheir second men’s hockey nationalchampionship.

Today,the team is celebrating yetagain,as Duluth News Tribune readers voted them the “Best LocalSports Team.”

“We truly, truly enjoy their support,”said Herter.“The support youget from the community getsyou ready and revved up forthe game. Youwanttodowell,for them… Ihope we do enoughtoprovetothe fans outthere andthe people who support us that we’re worthy of it.”
Community service is partofthe athletic department’s focus.Players take turns giving back,dedicating hundreds of hours to volunteerism by reading to elementary students, participating in the NorthShore Inline Marathon’s KidsRaces, Udac Walk aMile in Our Shoes, Duluth Area Special andSled Hockey and more.
