Immune Elixirs

Method Juice the spinach first. Follow with the beet. Finish with the carrots. Transfer juice to a blender, and add the spirulina while the juice is spinning on a low setting. A blender is essential to mix in the powder because it is so fine and gets sticky when wet. Pour into a tall glass.

Deep Immune Elixir

Hot

Sweet and spicy, this exotic drink warms my bones and keeps the fire going in my body through the winter. For less sweetness, reduce the number of dates. For more spiciness, increase the amount of ginger. The banana adds thickness but is not essential.

Ingredients 6 1/2 inch 4 medium 1 1/2 1 tbsp.

dates, soaked in hot water ginger root red apples lemon, peeled banana, peeled chywanprash (see p. 196)

Method Soak the dates in hot water for 15 minutes. In the meantime, juice the ginger. Follow with the apples and lemon. Put the ginger, apple and lemon juice in the blender with the banana. Start on a low setting while you add the soaked dates and chywanprash paste. Blend for about 2 minutes. Heat gently in a saucepan until juice is nice and warm. Do not boil. Pour into a mug. Sip slowly.
