789 A REGENCY STYLE GILT BRASS AND STEEL COMPANION SET with a central reeded column and cast top suspending a poker, brush, tongs and toasting fork, 33½” high

Provenance: A Dorset Manor House.

Probably originally the property of the Seymer family.

This enigmatic tankard appears to relate to so-called Veneto-Saracenic metalwork, which has been the subject of considerable academic debate in recent years. The stylistic vocabulary may indicate that it was made in Venice, but a Levantine origin cannot be discounted. It seems likely that the tinned ground on the exterior was originally filled with a black compound, traces of which remain in some places.
