Richard Wagoner, chairman and chief executive officer of General Motors Corporation, will deliver the 2007 commencement address Sunday.

“It’s a real honor to be asked to speak at such an important occasion for Duke University, this year’s graduates, and their families and friends,” Wagoner told The Chronicle in an e-mail in March.

Wagoner, Trinity ’75, is co-chair of the Financial Aid Initiative and a member of the Board of Trustees, serving on the board’s executive, trusteeship and student affairs committees. He is also on the Fuqua School of Business Board of Visitors.

“I’m very grateful that Rick Wagoner has agreed to speak at our commencement,” President Richard Brodhead said in a statement. “He loves this university and has served it in a thousand ways.”

Brodhead said Wagoner will help graduates look into their futures as they leave the University.

“Like all our graduates, when he left Duke, Rick went off to see what he could make of the opportunities of his time,” Brodhead said. “In the process, he became CEO in one ofAmerica’s biggest and most challenging business and a leader whose strength and integrity are known throughout the world.”

Wagoner was born in Wilmington, Del. but raised in Richmond, Va. He currendy lives in Detroit, Mich.

At 47, he became GM’s youngest chief executive officer in history in 2000 and was elected chairman in 2003.

He joined GM as an analyst in the treasurer’s office in New York in 1977 after receiving a master’s degree in business administration from Harvard University.

GM CEO Rick Wagoner, Trinity 75, will deliver Sunday's commencement address to the Class of 2007.

Brazil, Canada and Switzerland, Wagoner was promoted to executive vice president and chief financial officer in 1992. Between 1993 and 1994 he was also responsible for worldwide purchasing for GM. Wagoner was named executive vice president of GM and president of North American Operations in 1994 and was elected president and chief operating officer in 1998.

“He is someone who is recognized around the world as one of the most important people in business but beyond that he is a person with great international understanding and also someone with strong Duke ties,” John Burness, senior vice president for government affairs and public re-

lations, told The Chronicle in March Wagoner met his wife, Kathy Wagoner, Trinity ’77, at Duke and two of the couple’s three sons attended Duke. Trip graduated from the University in 2006 and Scott is a current junior. Wagoner’s father, sister and brother-in-law are also Duke graduates.

Wagoner is a frequent visitor to the University’s campus.

“He’ll give a great speech,” said senior Andrew Longenecker, a member of the commencement committee. “I feel like he will impart a lot of knowledge and energy to the graduates.”

Instead of having to “talk about an awkward turtle,” as his headband read at the Duke-Maryland basketball game, senior David Schmidt will have more than just a cheap prop to draw laughter from the audience when he delivers his commencement address Sunday.

Schmidt was one of three students unmasked at the final men’s basketball game of the season—when Duke took on the Terrapins—after a year of performing as the Blue Devil mascot. He said his experience plays a large role in the speech he will deliver in Wallace Wade Stadium.

“I was one of the mascots, and... I thought I could use it to my advantage writing a speech,” the 2007 student commencement speaker said.

“I get to feel more like Clark Kent on a daily basis than the average student. When you’re the only guy traveling with the cheerleaders it’s not like you’re keeping it a secret from the teams, but I usually just tell people I’m the cheerleaders’ manager. Like I get them water or something.”

Schmidt, who is also a member of the sketch comedy club Inside Joke, said there was no question that he would submit a speech, and it was only natural that it be comedic.

“It’s actually always been a goal of mine to speak at a graduation,” he said. “It means you’ve done something with your life.”

That said, Schmidt said he is not sure what ca-

reer path he will pursue after he leaves Duke.

“I’m a Spanish major, so naturally that leads me to teaching English in Germany. I’m hoping to learn [German] quickly. I heard about it Monday and had die job by Wednesday, so there’s a year of my life. I’ve got a lot more time ahead of me than I have behind me, so I guess I’ll see what happens.”

A Derwood, Md., native, Schmidt transferred to Duke his sophomore year after spending a year at Texas Christian University in Fort Worth, Texas.

“I didn’t get in [to Duke] out of high school,” he said. “It’s the ultimate twist of fate that I’m now speaking at their graduation. It took me kind of a year of being somewhere else to realize what I was missing.”

Speeches were submitted to the student speaker selection committee March 8 and were first read without the author’s names on them.

Finalists were asked to deliver their speeches before the committee several times before the actual speaker was chosen.

Sterly Wilder, executive director of alumni affairs and a member of the student speaker selection committee, said Schmidt’s speech was chosen because of his sense of humor and his ability to appeal to a varied audience.

Freshman Year

Duke spent the 2003-2004 academic year examining its institutional soul and selecting the leaders who would guide the University as it surpassed 80 years of existence.

President Nan Keohane’s final year marked a period of transition as the University and Medical Center selected new leadership, the $2.36-billion Campaign for a Duke came to a close and administrators pondered the final report of Keohane’s Women’s Initiative Steering Committee.

The committee, which Keohane herself chaired, produced a report that found women on campus faced a unique set of challenges.

Female faculty and graduate students said they feared raising children would hurt their careers, undergraduate women complained about a culture that pressured them to achieve academic, physical and social perfection and women across all divisions expressed concern about safety on campus.

An Oct. 24, 2003 column in The Chronicle intensified discussion of women’s status on campus. An anonymous student wrote an op-ed detailing her struggles with low self-esteem, bulimia and her “desire to fit in with a certain group, to make a certain grade, to get a certain guy, to be more like a certain person.”

Duke responded to the findings of the WISC and the column by developing a more generous parental leave policy for employees, the Baldwin Scholars program for undergraduate women and taking a series of other steps to make Duke more hospitable to female employees and scholars.

The tensions between the University’s minority community and Duke’s mostly white greek community came to the fore

in the fall of 2003 when Sigma Chi fraternity hosted a controversial party organized around the theme “Viva Mexico.” Invitations to the party were designed to look like expired green cards, and the party security called themselves “border patrol,” outraging many in the Latino community.

While the campus’ culture was under scrutiny, the University was also in the midst of changing leadership and completing the seven-year Campaign for Duke fundraising drive. The campaign ended Dec. 31, 2003, having raised $2.36 billion for the University-hours before the January 1 deadline, campaign co-chairs Peter and Ginny Nicholas made a $72-million donation to cap off the drive.

Keohane’s successor was revealed to the Duke community in December, when the Board ofTrustees named Dean ofYale College Richard Brodhead as the University’s ninth president. Brodhead spent the remainder of the year learning about the University, and he was an active participant in the search for a new chancellor for health affairs to replace outgoing chancellor Dr. Ralph Snyderman.

That search concluded in April with the selection of Dr. Victor Dzau, chair of the Department of Medicine at the Harvard Medical School. The Duke University Health System continued to evolve as the selection of a new chancellor came with the concurrent redefinition of the role to more clearly delineate its subordination to the University president.

Both administrators took control July 1.

Hopes were high for the football team, but head coach Carl Franks did not meet expectations. He was fired mid-season, and a few months later interim head coach Ted Roof was offered the top spot.

Sophomore Year Days after President Richard Brodhead took the reins of the University, men’s basketball head coach Mike Krzyzewski was offered a position as head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers —a series of events that would prove a portent of the news that would come to characterize a monumental 2004-2005 academic year.

Brodhead took up residence in the Allen Building July 1, following Nan Keohane to become Duke’s ninth president. After his inauguration, the celebrated former Yalie named international issues such as global health and improving undergraduate research opportunities as priorities.

Brodhead also stressed the importance of putting a practical twist on the lessons learned in the University’s lecture auditoriums and hallowed halls.

He proposed and initiated a financial aid push, which began with a $2O-million donationfrom alumnus William Gross. The push would evolve to become the Financial Aid Initiative the next year with a goal of raising $3OO million.

Krzyzewski ultimately decided not to go pro, but Brodhead and the University faced a new set of challenges in Fall 2004. Advocating the need for free speech on a col-

lege campus, the new president and the University allowed the Palestine Solidarity Movement to hold its con-

ference on the Duke campus—a controversial move that evoked the criticism of many who deemed it an imprudent move to allow the “anti-Semitic” group on campus.

The Freeman Center for Jewish Life sponsored speakers and a concert in response to the PSM’s appearance on campus, and the University proceeded to increase security in the days leading up to the conference.

During the same time and amid a number of political tensions on campus, The Chronicle—which celebrated its 100th anniversary in the fall—faced opposition from members of the Jewish community when it printed an October column by Phillip Kurian entitled “The Jews.” Many criticized the newspaper’s coverage of the PSM conference and issues surrounding it.

Construction, meanwhile, continued to be a staple on campus, and the $lO7-million Fitzpatrick Center for Interdisciplinary Engineering, Medicine and Applied Sciences opened its doors. The building of the new Bell Tower Dormitory on East Campus, the French Family Science Center and the Nasher Museum of Art and a number of renovations continued throughout the year. Plans for a new Bryan Center walkway, slated for completion in Fall 2006, were announced and discussion about the new Central Campus continued in full.

Also making headlines, former president Douglas Knight passed away and the Duke University Health System faced criticism for mistakenly using elevator hydraulic fluid to wash'surgical tools.

For many, however, buzz on campus surrounded a new technology initiative that put iPods in the hands of every member of the Class of 2008 and created a number of designated iPod classes—a move well-received by incoming Dukies, and debated among upperclassmen.

Outside the Gothic Wonderland’s stone walls, two other Yale alumni faced off in the heated 2004 presidential contest. The race between Sen: John Kerry, D-Mass., and Republican President George W. Bush prompted a number of rallies and debates on campus. Many student organizations brought in speakers and some professors decided to teach election-based classes.

Nightlife experienced some interesting developments at the end of the school year. Cafe Parizade—a favorite club for incoming freshman and veteran partygoers alike—closed its doors shortly after one ofits workers was caught photographing female students through a peephole in the women’s bathroom wall.

A Duke student alleged she was sexually assaulted by taxi driver Hasan Kafi, the first driver many students would call after a long night out on the town. Kafi was arrested on charges of sexual battery and second-degree kidnapping.

A year after Duke Student Government received the restructuring its members had discussed for over three years, the student organization experienced a tumultuous and controversial presidential election. In the end, Jesse Longoria came out on top when he garnered 54.6 percent of the student vote.

In the spring, The Chronicle reported that the baseball team had suffered coaching misconduct, quoting players who alleged that members of the team had used steroids. Head baseball coach Bill Hillier resigned at the end of the year.

On the fields and under Cameron Indoor Stadium’s lofted lights, the athletics program experienced its ups and downs. Almost a year after breaking a 23-game losing streak, the Wade Wackoes once again stormed the field when the football team defeated Clemson.

Although not snow-filled, K-ville was a bit colder than usual during the winter months. The men’s basketball team lost a number of key players, and then lost to Michigan State in the Sweet Sixteen. The team did, however, win a close-fought 71 to 70 batde against the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. In the time-honored tradition, students took to Main West Quadrangle to burn benches in celebration of the victory.

Junior Year The Class of 2007’s junior year was filled with memorable highs and lows, including events that opened up dialogue on issues such as race, community relations and the University’s priorities for the next five years.

From the Rolling Stones’ concert to the lacrosse scandal, the Duke community was rocked in more ways than one.

Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans before most students had setded into their dormitory rooms. But Duke responded quickly, announcing that it would make space available to Gulf Coast students who were from North and South Carolina or had des to the University.

Student groups on campus responded in their own way, holding fundraising campaigns by selling shirts and CDs, arranging for donations to be made on FLEX and holding benefit concerts and parties.

Meanwhile, running errands on West Campus became justa little bit harder, as students were forced to find detours to reach the Bryan Center. Beginning in August, workers began to demolish the old Bryan Center Walkway. A new plaza took shape gradually over the course of the year.

ger and his quartet of sexagenarians electrified 40,000 fans who had packed into Wallace Wade Stadium.

A month later, former Secretary of State Colin Powell brought another crowd to its feet as he delivered the keynote address in the dedication of Rubenstein Hall.

On the academic side, administrators formulated the strategic plan that will guide the University for the next half-decade and continued to lay the groundwork for the complete overhaul of Central Campus.

The spring semester was a tumultuous one as students returned from Spring Break to allegations that members of the men’s lacrosse team raped a black exotic dancer at a party held at 610 North Buchanan Blvd. —an off-campus property rented by three of the team’s captains.

The national media descended on campus, casting the scandal as a “perfect storm” ofrace, class and gender issues.

The cancellation of the team’s season, resignation of head coach Mike Pressler and indictment of two sophomore players —a third was indicted just after his graduation in May—intensified the spotlight put on the University. Numerous panels, forums and protests were held in response to the charges and the issues they brought to the surface.

The party where the alleged rape occurred, some critics claimed, was just one example of an off-campus social scene that has gotten out of control.

Although neighborhood activists commended the administration’s decision in February to purchase 15 properties off-East—including the 610 North Buchanan Blvd.—with an intention to sell the rental properties into owner-occupied residences, many students denounced the move as an effort by the University to restrict the social scene.

As the school year wound down, the rape case remained unresolved but the issues it brought to the forefront—including town-gown relations and campus culture—would continue to be discussed and dissected.

In sports, both the men’s and women’s basketball teams entered the season ranked No. 1, and both teams faltered on the road to the national title. Despite suffering a Sweet Sixteen loss, the men’s basketball team cut down the nets at the ACC championships once again.

Senior J. J. Redick broke both the Duke all-time scoring record and the NCAA all-time three-point shooting record, winning numerous post-season awards for national player of the year. The season’s other highlights were Shelden Williams being named the national defensive player of the year again and Sean Dockery’s buzzer-beating, three-point shot, which allowed Duke to avoid an early season defeat by Virginia Tech.

The women’s basketball team lost to Maryland in the NCAA title game, suffering the same fate thatDuke’s field hockey team had earlier in the year.

The women’s cross country and golf teams and the men’s tennis and soccer teams were all crowned ACC champions.

During the past four years, Duke students have witnessed their campus culture questioned and criticized, but never have Duke student interactions and relations defined a year as it did in the Class of 2007’s senior year.

With allegations ofrape, sexual assault and kidnapping against three former members of the men’s lacrosse team still pending, students returned to a University community in a state of turmoil in Fall 2006, as it struggled to identify and remedy problems on campus.

While students moved in after a long summer, Larry Moneta, vice president for student affairs, was busy working to change the Duke social scene in his own way. Com-

Campus walls and into the Durham community.

Yet despite improvements in some areas on campus, Duke dropped to eighth in its U.S. News and World Report ranking in 2006 —its lowest undergraduate ranking

since 1999.

Pretrial hearings in the lacrosse case continued through the fall, but it became clear that the tide was turning as allegations of possible misconduct by Durham District Attorney Mike Nifong and investigators began to circulate.

In December, the North Carolina State Bar charged Nifong with mishandling the case in its pretrial stages by making extrajudicial statements condemning the accused players. In January, the Bar added an additional charge for withholding information from defense lawyers regarding the results of DNA testing.

Under fire, Nifong dropped rape charges against the three indicted players and stepped down from the case, in the midst ofWinter Break, requesting that North Carolina Attorney General Roy Cooper fill his place.

In the meantime, students returned to the campus following Winter Break to a chilly winter with belOw-normal temperatures for weeks—and even a few surprising days of snow.

Commissioned by President Richard Brodhead in the aftermath of last March’s allegations, the Campus Culture Initiative ended its nearly one-year study of Duke’s campus culture in the spring. The 36-page report was released in February to mixed reviews. Many students cited recommendations regarding alcohol policies, athletics and selective living groups—as well as a general lack of student input and empirical data in the report’s findings —as weaknesses.

The opening ofthe 280,000 sq.-ft. French Family Science Center, funded by a $3O-million gift from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, was one of a number of contributions made by the foundation to encourage education outside of the classroom. With a $l5-million gift to foster undergraduate community service projects through DukeEngage and another $lO million to support Brodhead’s Financial Aid Initiative, it was the year of Melinda French Gates, Trinity ’B6, Fuqua ’B7 and the foundation’s co-chair.

Spring semester also brought with it another small solution to a big problem as two students collaborated to launch Duke Plays, an organization dedicated to the motto; “Work hard, play well.” The organization was responsible for hosting Duke Plays: The Party!, a multi-thousand-dollar extravaganza in the libraries with invitations extended to all members of the Duke community, from students to faculty to trustees and alumni donors.

In February, the new lacrosse season kicked off as players burst through the tunnel to a sold-out crowd. The team’s victory over Dartmouth in the first game was indicative of a season of success for the players.

April was a month of good news for lacfosse at Duke: Cooper dropped all remaining charges against the three indicted former players, declaring their innocence in the case and criticizing Nifong’s behavior in the case. Later in the month, the 2006-2007 men’s lacrosse team marched off the field ACC trophy in hand.

Other parts of the athletics program, however, did not fare quite as well, with a disappointing winless season for the football team and less-than-perfect endings for both the men and women’s basketball teams.

Despite a rough season for the men’s team, students held on to hope for the promising women’s team—undefeated through the regular season—and for the chance of a run for both teams to the national championship. All hopes were crushed when the men fell in the first round of the tournament for the first time in 11 seasons and the women faced a heartbreaking loss to Rutgers in the Sweet Sixteen.

The loss for the women’s team was followed by another—this one off the court. In April, popular women’s basketball head coach Gail Goestenkors announced her decision to leave Duke to coach at University of Texas.

Weeks later Duke welcomed a new coach, Joanne R McCallie, or “Coach P,” as the new head coach for the team.

But through it all, it was a year of promise. Promise for a University, gaining new footing after a year ofuncertainty and reevaluation. Promise for a student body, led to understand campus politics in a new light by outspoken and persistent Duke Student Government President Elliott Wolf, and promise for a campus, as leader surged students to reimagine what a University should and could be.

Leukemia for Chickens One Wimp's Tale About Living Through Cancer A Memoir Roger Madoff, Class of’9s, was a reporter for The Chronicle and Bloomberg News, and lived in New York City with his wife, Jen and dog, Milo. He was diagnosed with leukemia in 2002, and after enduring two stem cell transplants and two years of treatment, he felt strong enough to write about his experience. Roger died in April 2006, at the age of 32, from the debilitating side effects of his second transplant. This book is filled with the strength, humor, love and hope that defined his life.

Research Subjects Wanted Researchers in the Duke University Division of Dermatology are looking for research subjects to take part in a new study to determine whether an investigational topical antioxidant mixture is effective in protecting the skin from sun damage.

Study drug will be provided at no charge, and eligible subjects will be compensated $2OO upon completion of the study.

The study will involve visiting the Duke Clinic for 5 consecutive days for application of the study drug, UN/ tight testing, and three small skin biopsies. The first three days should be short (10-20 minutes) visits, the 4th and sth days slightly

longer (30-45 minutes).
