Summary of significant accounting policies (continued) 2.4 Foreign currency translation (a) Functional and presentation currency Items included in the financial statements of each of the Group’s entities are measured using the currency of the primary economic environment in which the entity operates (“the functional currency”). The consolidated financial statements are presented in the United Arab Emirates Dirham (“AED”) which is the Company’s functional and the Group’s presentation currency. Transactions and balances Foreign currency transactions are translated into the functional currency using the exchange rates prevailing at the dates of the transactions. Foreign exchange gains and losses resulting from the settlement of such transactions and from the translation at year-end exchange rates of monetary assets and liabilities denominated in foreign currencies are recognised in the consolidated statement of profit or loss. Group companies The results and financial positions of all the subsidiaries (none of which has the currency of a hyperinflationary economy) that have a functional currency different from the presentation currency are translated into the presentation currency as follows:

assets and liabilities for each statement of financial position presented are translated at the closing rate at the date of the statement of financial position; income and expenses for each statement of comprehensive income are translated at average exchange rates during the financial year; and all resulting exchange differences are recognised as a separate component of equity called "translation reserve".

On consolidation, exchange differences arising from the translation of the net investment in foreign operations are taken to equity. When a foreign operation is sold, exchange differences that were recorded in equity are recognised in the consolidated statement of profit or loss as part of the gain or loss on sale. Goodwill and fair value adjustments arising on the acquisition of a foreign entity are treated as assets and liabilities of the foreign entity and translated at the closing rate at the consolidated statement of

financial position date. Exchange differences arising on translation of these items are recognised in consolidated statement of other comprehensive income.

2.5 Property, plant and equipment Property, plant and equipment are stated at historical cost less accumulated depreciation and accumulated impairment losses, if any. Subsequent costs are included in the asset’s carrying amount or recognised as a separate asset, as appropriate, only when it is probable that future economic benefits associated with the item will flow to the Group and the cost of the item can be measured reliably. Land is not depreciated. Depreciation is calculated using the straight-line method to allocate the assets’ cost to their residual values over their estimated useful lives. The principal annual rates used for this purpose are as follows: Land and buildings Machinery, plant and equipment Motor vehicles Furniture and office equipment

The estimated useful lives, residual values and depreciation method are reviewed at each year end, with the effect of any changes in estimate accounted for on a prospective basis. Capital work-in-progress is stated at cost and includes equipment that is being developed for future use. When commissioned, capital work-in-progress is transferred to appropriate category of property, plant and equipment and depreciated in accordance with the Group’s policies.

2.6 Investment properties Investment properties are measured initially at cost, including transaction costs. The carrying amount includes the cost expenditure which are capitalised as and when activities that are necessary to get the investment properties ready for use for the purpose they are intended to. The carrying amount excludes the costs of day-to-day servicing of an investment property. Subsequent to initial recognition, investment properties are stated at fair value at each reporting period, which reflects market conditions at the reporting date. Gains or losses arising from changes in the fair values of investment properties are included in the consolidated statement of profit or loss in the year in which they arise. Investment properties are derecognised when either they have been disposed of or when the investment property is permanently withdrawn from use and no future economic benefit is expected from its disposal. 16
