DUCAC Annual Report 2012-13

The DU Cycling Club, in partnership with Cycle4haiti charity, held an intimate evening with Double Olympic Gold Medalist and Strictly Come Dancing Star Victoria Pendleton. RTE sports broadcaster Darren Frehill interviews Victoria on the night about her Olympic career, training regime and the future for Victoria. The event was held in March in the Pavilion and following by her interview in the Ed Burke Theatre in College. The DU Trampoline Club hosted their Intervarsity Competition in the Sports Centre in Trinity College over the weekend of 16th November 2012. Individual competitors completed two warm up routines and two scored routines, ten moves in each, within ability levels ranging from novice (no somersaults) all the way to elite (minimum of 7 somersaults). The two competition routines were comprised of one set routine, devised in levels specifically for the competition by our head coach Ciaran O’Neill, and one voluntary routine, where the gymnasts were allowed to complete any ten moves they wished within a certain difficulty level or tariff. The scores from these two routines and the tariff were added together to form the individual total score, and ranking within ability level. The set scores of each individual from each team were added together to form the total score for the team in order to ascertain who had won the shield. Trinity as a team performed well, considering that the committee had had very little time to focus on training and coaching with the sheer level of organisational duties that come with hosting a competition for eight University teams (200 competitors plus spectators!) from around Ireland. We came in third place in total for the shield, with the majority of our competitors placing within the top 10 in their categories. Owen Vahey also achieved a bronze medal in the intermediate men category. The Saturday night then comprised of a medal ceremony in the Pavilion, where unfortunately UCD took the shield, which showcased the best of TCD hospitality, followed by a well-deserved night out. Sunday followed with a later 11am start for the synchronised competition. This slightly more informal competition saw mixed and single gender teams of two from any club competing within the same ability levels as the main competition, but with the added synchronisation score. This score related to how matched the gymnasts were, both in timing, height of bounce, and shape in the air. Trinity again performed well with a TCD team of Danny Finn and Fiona Dolan taking the silver medal in the advanced category. Kate O’Neill, Competitions Officer 2012/2013 Intervarsity
