Experience the wild and wonderful at the internationally recognised Taronga Western Plains Zoo. By car, bike, electric cart or on foot, you can safari around the world to see hundreds of rare and endangered animals, including giraffes, rhinos and elephants. Get up close and personal with the king of them all in the new lion safari experience. Keen to cool off? Wellington is a water sports paradise, with water skiing, wakeboarding and fishing popular at Lake Burrendong, while kayaking and standup paddle boarding can be enjoyed at many spots along the Macquarie River. Reconnect with the family and engage in the abundant natural beauty across the region, from the prehistoric wonders of the Wellington Caves, the breathtaking scenery at Mount Arthur Reserve and 164 hectares of thriving bushland at Burrendong Botanic Garden and Arboretum. Both Wellington and Dubbo cross cultural borders with Dubbo’s authentic, picturesque Japanese gardens set amongst the 10-hectare Dubbo Regional Botanic Garden and Wellington’s charming Osawano Gardens located just 8km from town. Venture back in time and discover a well-preserved slice of history at the Western Plains Cultural Centre and view a Dendroglyph (carved tree), an immensely important Aboriginal artefact, one of more than 5,000 items which tell the story of the Dubbo Region. Gaze upon the eerie gallows and hangman’s kit at the remarkably intact 19th Century, Old Dubbo Gaol and step back into life in the early colony at Dundullimal Homestead Australia’s oldest standing timber slab homestead.
