The Dubbo Region’s rich cultural history began with the Wiradjuri people, who have called this land home for over 40,000 years. As you explore the Dubbo Region take a moment to acknowledge this beautiful land’s Traditional Custodians. We ask all visitors to respect and preserve the land and culture that has survived over thousands of years, and pay respects to Elders both past and present and extend that respect to other Indigenous Australians on country. Terramungamine Reserve, just off Burraway Road, Dubbo.

The waterways of the Dubbo Region have always held a special significance

to the Wiradjuri people of this area. The Macquarie River’s traditional name is Wambuul meaning ‘winding river’. The ebb and flow of the Wambuul through Dubbo and Wellington provided many ceremonial sites and gathering places for the local tribes. Visitors can still see evidence of one of the important gathering places at Terramungamine Reserve near Dubbo where the rocks bear over 150 grooves and carvings created over many years as the Wiradjuri people shaped tools and spears (pictured left).

The Dubbo Wiradjuri Garden (pictured right and below) offers the opportunity to further immerse the senses in Wiradjuri culture. This culturally significant and accessible meeting space for the community features large spans of open grass and accessible path systems representing the three key rivers of the area. Conversation is encouraged by the two large sandstone yarning circles, while native gardens with vegetation endemic to the area provides a serene atmosphere. The focal point of the garden space is the 50 metre rainbow serpent alive with a variety of native plant life.
