The maxi dress trend bowled us over this summer and it looks like it’s here to stay awhile longer. Runways were abuzz with breezy, flowing long dresses, teamed with billowing blouson sleeves, asymmetric hemlines, in prints or block colours…versions aplenty. The classic bohemian avatar of the maxi dresses of last season are now giving way to a little more structure, in keeping with the more sombre styles of the season. Characterized by its fluidity, the maxi dress is very often designed in delicate fabrics and prints; animal prints, nautical stripes or even tribal and ethnic influences all work well with this trend. The one-shoulder and draped varieties also look lovely on the maxi dress. Knitted, form fitting, t-shirt maxis are also making a comeback. The versatility and practicality of the maxi dress cannot be overestimated; in our milder winters and respectful cultures, it’s probably the ideal choice of attire. For the day, team your maxi dress with a pair of sandals or gladiators and you’re good to go or pair with wedges for a bit of height.
