Ishu Rupani Hello to my golfing friends at EGC After 13 years of great living in Hong Kong I moved with my wife and three children to Dubai. This was in August 1992. I thought it would be better to move in the peak of the heat and get complaints from the family so that I could tell them that, from that period onwards the weather would only get better. Being an avid squash player I spent a lot of time at the Trade Centre Apartments Club squash courts until the following year, in 1993, when one of my friends, Dilip Awtani, suggested that I play golf and he even even booked the first lesson for me at the Dubai Creek Golf & Yacht Club. That was the start of my wonderful journey of playing golf. In 1994 I became a member of Emirates Golf Club. I recollect Mike Gerbich was the Captain of the Club and how welcoming he was - always there to help and always smiling. He passed away in July this year. RIP Mike. They say golf is like life but don’t believe that. Golf is more complicated!! Just think of the number of mood swings you go through in just one round!! From a starting handicap of 28 I am now 10.6 after playing this game for 22 years and being a member of the fabulous Emirates Golf Club. I would play every day if I could. It’s cheaper than going to a shrink and has probably kept more people sane.
In 2010 I achieved my golf bucket list. 1. I played at the Old Course on my first trip to Scotland which was sponsored by Chivas. 2. In the same year on 2nd December, UAE National Day, I had my only holein-one on the Majlis hole number 4. 3.Last year for the first time I also managed to get to single digits with a handicap of 7.9! I have also been on many overseas golf trips with my friends. One of the trips to Antalya which was arranged by Emirates Golf Club in April 2015 was simply wonderful. I hope the Club will think of arranging more of such golf trips. Recently we were in Bulgaria - see photos. Emirates Golf Club is like my second home. I thank the management for making me a member of the Consultative Committee for two years. I would also like to thank all colleagues of the Club, as well as the Golf Operations team, F&B, Locker Room and Fit Lab. They are always smiling and helpful. Thank you to Jacqui for her continued efforts to publish Club Life. I look forward to another exciting year at EGC and I wish Captains Vipen Sethi and Maura Duggan and Vice-Captains Ivan Fornazaric and Najla Bartette all the very best for the season ahead.
