doubletruck: n. An ad or editorial project that covers two facing pages. The term originates from the days when heavy forms for newspaper pages, largely filled with lead type, were rolled around the composing room floor on heavy carts called trucks. Two pages for one project meant a doubletruck. — The Detroit Free Press
H
ope you and yours are well.
Proud to bring you another blockbuster issue, with 90 days of the world news from every corner of the globe, by the greatest storytellers of our times. Very proud of this issue and hope you enjoy it too. Every now and then everything comes to together. Things you expect, don’t happen and others do. Some very good and some very bad. It is rare, a perfect storm. 2014 may be such a year. The year began quietly, the Sochi Olympics in Russia started without a hitch, despite all the concerns about security issues. Then the spurting Ukraine unrest, became a full-fledged Revolution (known as the Euromaidan Revolution or Revolution of Dignity). Kicking into high gear on February the 18th. Five days later, the government was toppled. A new chapter began. Meanwhile another movement began to take shape after a decade of up and down activity. Going up a large and dangerous level: The Islamic State of Iraq and Levant or ISIS had close links and ties to Al-Qaeda until February 2014 when, after an eight-month power struggle, Al-Qaeda cut all ties with the group, reportedly for its brutality and “notorious intractability.” The story of this group is just beginning. These stories and many more are within the pages of issue 35 of DOUBLEtruck as it enters it’s first decade. Rounding out this issue, Contributing Editor Stan Sholik reviews the extraordinarily talented photographer, now book publisher, Al Satterwhite. Debuting his newest self-published masterpiece: The Cozumel Diary (Running amuck with the King of Gonzo and other weird tales). Thank you for your support,
Scott Mc Kiernan

February 4, 2014 - Kiev, Ukraine - Helmeted and armed with a big stick, the ski-masked protestor, wearing a hoodie that reads ‘Soviet’ in red, is ready for whatver comes next. Ukraine’s parliament adopted tougher security laws against public marches, as tension rises between the anti-government occupy movement and soldiers. The frontline is covered in snow as the dramatic standoff continues on Mykhaila Hrushevskoho Street at Maidan Nezalezhnosti (Independence Square), which is the central square of Kiev, the capital city of Ukraine.
U k r a ine: Buried By History, Lost In Translation Text By Pitor Smolar/Le Monde via Worldcrunch
The competing sides, both globally and regionally, will never see Ukraine’s reality the same way, so deep are the historical and cultural divides. KIEV — The undeniable truth about the existential crisis unfolding in Ukraine is that the two sides are unlikely ever to share the same reality, the same language. This is just as true for the internal sides between the western and eastern regions of Ukraine as it is for the global sides between the Western world and Russia, which are both fighting for influence in a country that has too long been a mere buffer zone. Inside Ukraine, there are two opposing narratives, neither of which can be dismissed. First, there are the people of the Maidan protests, united around the memory of the “Celestial Hundred” martyrs, as they call the dissidents who were killed by police in Kiev. They believe they have a moral right, which came at a high cost, to participate in the country’s future. The Maidan revolutionaries believe their uprising must bring about a cleansing among the administration and the elites, that there should be a clean break from a corrupt political system based on impunity and selective justice, evils that also existed during the 2004 Orange Revolution, but that were badly exacerbated by President Viktor Yanukovych and his predator clan. Maidan is deeply attached to national sovereignty, and it fought against a regime, not for Europe. Still, for many being part of the European Union would represent a path to national emancipation, freedom from Ukraine’s Russian neighbor, and a way to push forward reforms that have been postponed for too long. This disdain can sometimes be found among the opposition leaders now in power. And it is depressing to realize that not one of them is capable of taking the high road and calling for the reconciliation of the two Ukraines: the one before and the one after Maidan. The simplified presentation of Ukraine as two geographical blocs is partly true, but it also omits important elements and therefore fails to convey the complexity of Ukrainian society. Debates about the risk of separatism are based on the false assumption that people from the East prefer independence or Russia to their own country. But we must accept that their fears of a cultural annexation to the nationalists in the West and of the loss of their history are real. That said, most of them still think of themselves as Ukrainian, in their own way. Would we ask a Texas conservative and a student from New York to feel American in the exact same way? Some might find it inappropriate to keep statues of Russian communist revolutionary Vladimir Lenin in this part of the country. And yet they are part of the urban landscape. Their toppling at the hands of people considered to be hostile is perceived as an act of aggression. Similarly, the Ukrainian Parliament’s decision after Viktor Yanukovych’s ouster to scrap a law that gave foreign languages a regional status sent a disastrous signal at a time when national unity should have been the golden thread in Kiev. They were the mother tongue of at least 10% of the population. Even though interim President Oleksandr Turchynov vetoed the bill, the damage was done. DT

The Cozumel Diary: [Running amuck with the King of Gonzo and other weird tales] by Al Satterwhite Book Review by Stan Sholik
Forty two years have passed since the publication of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas: A Savage Journey to the Heart
of the American Dream, and the mythos surrounding its author, Hunter S. Thompson, seemingly continues unabated. But if he were the drugged out, booze swilling, wild-eyed reprobate he portrays himself as in his writings, Al Satterwhite must have been photographing the wrong person in his latest book, The Cozumel Diary [Running amuck with the King of Gonzo and other weird tales]. One wonders how many of the 487 people that contributed $55,987 in 40 days to Mr. Satterwhite’s successful Kickstarter project to fund the publication of the book are disappointed to see unremarkable photographs of an ordinary looking, balding tourist sitting on the beach in Cozumel with a beer rather than the character Mr. Thompson portrays himself as in his writings, or Johnny Depp portrays in the movie of Mr. Thompson’s The Rum Diaries. The occasion for the book’s publication is the 40th anniversary of the Craig Vetter interview of Mr. Thompson, with accompanying photos by Mr. Satterwhite, that appeared in Playboy magazine. (Is 40 the new 50 for reminiscing?) In case you missed the November 1974 issue, the interview is reprinted in its entirety in the book and well worth the read. Mr. Vetter also contributes the foreward to the book.
As it turns out, I found the writing in the book more interesting than the bulk of the images. Mr. Satterwhite contrib-
utes the majority of the writing with anecdotes of the Cozumel shoot along with other events through the years when his and Mr. Thompson’s paths crossed. These are interesting in ways that enlighten us into aspects of the persona of Mr. Thompson in ways that the photographs do not.
Mr. Satterwhite’s Playboy assignment required him to submit photos for the basic headshots that the magazine runs
along with the interview. The book is made up of page after page of these, some tight crops, some head and shoulders, some three-quarters and other full body, some color, most monochrome. We see Mr. Thompson looking at the camera, not looking at the camera, with and without sunglasses, with and without hat, with and without Camel cigarette in plastic holder, and even smiling in a few. Technically perfect, dust and scratches impeccably removed from 40-year old Tri-X negs, beautifully reproduced. But where are the photos from the nights in the Cozumel bars that Mr. Satterwhite describes, or the photo of an enraged Mr. Thompson with a four inch shark hook and twenty four inches of line wrapped around his neck that is described in the text, or the enraged (still enraged) Mr. Thompson going after the owner of the shark fishing boat in the local owner’s nightclub. Apparently the clean-shaven, smartly dressed subject of the photos did indeed have a darker side, though you would never guess from the photos.
Along with his commentary, Mr. Satterwhite deserves commendation for the book’s design. Film strips and contact
sheets are reproduced so photographers can see Mr. Satterwhite’s process leading up to and following several of the images he selects for inclusion in the book. There are also reproductions of several notes in the handwritten scrawl of Mr. Thompson to Mr. Satterwhite that show more of the writer’s sarcastic humor as well as the close relationship these men had than we see in the photographs. Tribute is paid to Ralph Steadman, longtime collaborator of Mr. Thompson, by scattering an abstract Steadman-like font throughout the book. This attention to detail is obvious in every aspect of the design and production of the book.
The Cozumel Diary is definitely a must-have book for those who must have every book by and about Hunter S. Thomp-
son. The man is an icon of American journalism and writing. His influence lives on, as do the facts and myths surrounding him. His writing is capable of blurring the line between reality and fantasy in ways that no other writer has and probably will ever be able. Mr. Satterwhite has captured the reality, but none of the fantasy, of the man.

CHNOLO TECHNOLO BORROWED LENSES BY
STAN SHOLIK
H
ave you ever wished you had a piece of equipment to shoot a commercial assignment, a wedding, or a great idea to update your portfolio? Or maybe you’ll be traveling on assignment and would feel more confident with another body the same as your main camera rather than that old backup you carry. Or it’s time for a little R&R and you’d like to take one of those mirrorless cameras and a couple of lenses on vacation rather than your heavy digital SLR. There are many occasions when it just doesn’t make sense to buy a piece of equipment that you may have limited use for in the future. For those times, renting is the better option. And BorrowLenses has become one of the leading online rental houses for photographic and video gear. By way of disclosure, I have rented from BorrowLenses on a number of occasions even though I live in Southern California with access to half a dozen local rental houses. But when you’re busy, or just lazy, it’s tough to beat ordering online, having your rental delivered to your
door, and shipping it back in the packaging it arrived in. The process couldn’t be simpler. You choose the gear you need from the BorrowLenses website, borrowlenses.com, select your rental duration, log in or create an account, enter start date and payment information, and you’re done. For most items, the FedEx shipping cost is about $25, and that’s round trip, not one way. A return shipping label is included in the package. BorrowLenses is the only rental outfit with warehouses on both coasts, in California and Massachusetts. There are also 30 pickup sites in twelve states, but there is still a shipping cost to the pickup site. Rental term begins on the day the first delivery attempt is made and must be shipped back on the day the rental ends. For example, a seven day rental that begins on a Monday must be shipped back on the following Monday. All this is clearly spelled out on paperwork when you receive the item, and BorrowLenses sends you an email the day before you should ship it back as a reminder. Very neat and efficient. But what if… The FAQs on the BorrowLenses website has answers for every contingency I could think of, and all the ones they have encountered. With the cost of the equipment you are likely to rent being high, loss or damage is most photographer’s biggest concern. BorrowLenses has this covered with the availability of a Damage Waiver fee for each piece of equipment. The damage waiver covers only the main piece of equipment you rent, and doesn’t let you off without liability entirely. If the equipment is damaged beyond normal wear and tear, you are charged a 12% deductible for the replacement cost of the item’s value, or repair fees, whichever is cheaper. If you had declined the damage waiver, you are responsible for 100% of the repair or replacement. And like all rentalhouses, the equipment carries an inventory tag. Removing the tag is considered damage

DTzine.com 173 DTzine.com 175 DTzine.com 175
and there is a $12 fee per tag. In my experience with renting gear from BorrowLenses, the equipment shows less wear and tear than my own, and I shoot mainly in the studio. I have never had an operational issue with their gear, and when I wanted to keep a piece for an extra couple of days, it was no problem. Of course, if someone had been waiting for it, it would have been. It is best to reserve gear as far in advance as you can, and if FedEx or UPS delivery is not 100% reliable in your area, give yourself a extra day buffer if you need the equipment for an important wedding or a trip abroad. When I first rented from BorrowLenses, the gear was pretty much Canon and Nikon, with a few other items. Now the equipment ranges from quality point and shoots to Leicas and Hasselblad H5D-60s and from GoPro to RED video cameras, with all the accessory items needed. In October of 2013, Shutterfly, Inc. acquired BorrowLenses. Max Shevyakov, one of the founders of BorrowLenses and now director of marketing at Shutterfly, believes this can only benefit the company. “In the beginning we always felt we were underfunded and couldn’t keep the inventory level we wanted during busy shooting seasons. Now, with Shutterfly’s financial backing and industry connections, we are able to have the inventory we need when professionals need it. It is also helping us to be one of the first rental houses to have the latest equipment available.” According to Mr. Shevyakov, while becoming part of Shutterfly, Inc., nothing about BorrowLenses will change. For heavy renters there is a membership option for $99 per year. Membership advantages are an automatic 10% discount on all rentals, an increased level of rental availability for gear you need that may not be available when you need it, the ability
to cancel a rental at any time without a fee, and a BorrowLenses T-shirt. BorrowLenses offers other services beside rentals. There is a selection of used gear taken out of rental and offered for sale. The equipment is guaranteed to be in perfect working order but with some cosmetic issues. You can return the purchase within 10 days and pay a restocking fee, or up to four weeks from purchase and be charged a rental fee. If you happen to be around their San Carlos, CA location, you can bring your camera in for a cleaning. In today’s business environment, it is discouraging to turn down an assignment because you don’t have the equipment to do your best possible work. With access to BorrowLenses, that never needs to happen.

March 25, 2014 - San Francisco, California, U.S. - Surfers catch waves under the famous iconic bridge at Fort Point. The Golden Gate Bridge, with its sweeping views of the Pacific Ocean and San Francisco Bay, has long been a destination for people seeking to end their lives. Since it opened in 1937, more than 1,400 people have plunged to their deaths, including a record 46 suicides last year, officials said. A vote will occur in June on putting a barrier up to impede the fatal leapers. For more go to ThePicturesOfTheDay.com
