Fencing is one of the most important investments in sheep farms. Protection and confinement are their main purpose, so farmers need to choose one that can keep the animals in safely. Whilst fences for sheep do not need to be as tall as for the cattle, these have other special requirements.

The Problem with Barbed Wire Predator control is one important consideration for sheep fences. Barbed wire fence are not advisable, as these do not deter predators effectively and can cause injury to livestock. The barbs, furthermore, can become covered with sheep wools, which may decrease their efficiency. Barbed wires should not be charged with electricity because of their poor conductivity and safety of the farm animals. The Cost-Effective Option Electric fences are a good option for discouraging animals, such as dogs and foxes. These are more costeffective than the standard barbed wire and offer temporary fencing to subdivide pasture. These increase the forage utilisation and decrease parasite issues with rotational grazing. If constructed the right way and energised with a proper controller, electric fences can be an effective and affordable means of providing temporary and permanent fencing.

Another Option Woven wire is a traditional choice of fencing for sheep. It has horizontal lines of smooth wires held apart by a set of vertical wires. High tensile wires are common in Australia and New Zealand, and offer advantages over conventional fencing. Apart from them being easier to construct, these also cost less, require less maintenance, and last longer. Updating Exiting Fences Old fences that have deteriorated to the extent may need replacement or can be rejuvenated by fixing the wires and brackets. Charging barbed wire is not a good practice, as livestock caught in the wire can be shocked to death. The wires are not as conducive as high tensile wires and may not carry sufficient electricity for the sheep. A good quality fence is necessary to keep sheep safe and protected. This is why farm and animal owners need to invest in right fencing system that is easy to maintain and durable.
