Governor Jibrilla Bindow said in Yola, that the move was an expression of the government’s sacrifice, in the interest of education. He called on well-meaning Nigerians to invest more in education, adding that the sector was vital to social development. He commended Governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo State for the provision of a secondary school for the less-privileged in Ad-

amawa State, addding that the state was one of the educational disadvantaged, assuring him of support from the state government. The land allotted to the Rochas Fundation was a former golf field. He said that the public interest surpassed the interest of an individual or group of individuals adding that the gesture would go a long way in propagating the change the people had been yearning for. “We can sacrifice anything for education because it is only peace that is as important as education. I commend Governor Rochas Okorocha for this kind gesture and I pray that the lord will grant him success in his future political enMRS. KHADIJAT AYODELE ADEDAYO - DADA

deavours. I am calling on well-meaning Nigerians to take a cue from Rochas to invest more in education, especially by supporting the less-privileged. “We will negotiate with the golfers and provide an alternative place for them, because even the constitution states that public interest surpasses any group interest”, he said. Earlier, Okorocha, who is also the chairman of the Rochas Foundation said the construction of the school would start in January 2015. He said that the gesture was to fulfil the promised he made that his foundation would build a school for internally displaced persons (IDPs).

He said that the foundation would incorporate the Attorney General, Commissioner for Education and the Speaker of the State House of Assembly as board members, adding that the board members would ensure that the beneficiaries of the educational gesture were genuinely the less-privileged. He said that 75 per cent of the students would be orphans, adding that the foundation would train the students to the university. He said that the foundation had partnered with some universities in around the world. He said that the school would have a hostel, staff quarters and sports complex, amongst others.

WHO warns over global upsurge of blindness

Val Okara Owerri

ÏÏÏ

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has warned that at least 285 million people, world-wide, live with low vision and blindness, 39 million people blind, while 246 million have moderate or severe visual impairment. The Chairman of the Nigerian Optometric Association, Imo State Chapter – Dr. Martin Ohiri – stated this while briefing newsmen in Owerri, the state capital, on the activities of the union for this year’s World Sight Day, with the theme “Universal Eye Health”. Ohiri said that the WHO had equally disclosed that an estimate of 19 million children were visually impaired, as 90 percent of blind people live in low income countries. Quoting the Nigerian National Blindness and Vi-

sual Impairment Survey, conducted from 2007 to 2009, Ohiri said that it was estimated that more than one million individuals, aged 40 and above, were currently blind in the country. “This is why a more proactive and intensive intervention approach should be used by governments, governmental and international agencies in tackling this challenge,” he said. He called on the multinationals and individuals to key into the call for eliminating avoidable causes of blindness, as directed by the WHO Global initiative for the elimination of avoidable blindness.
