Hijab Crisis: Oluwo intervenes as Muslim, Christian leaders clash
ÎCAN holds joint prayer session amidst tight security as students wear church regalia again Sodiq Adekunle, Osogbo
ÎÎÎThe ongoing crisis over
the wearing of Hijab in schools in Osun State almost turned bloody on Wednesday but for the intervention of a prominent traditional ruler in the state, the Oluwo of Iwo, Oba Abdul Rasheed Akanbi. This was as heavy security was deployed to Baptist Girls High School in Osogbo where the Secretariat of Christian Association of Nigerian,(CAN) was located ahead of a joint prayer session organised by CAN in the state. It was learnt that there was tension when some of the students appeared in the unusual garments in school again on Wednesday. Daily Times gathered that Muslim leaders had stormed the school on Wednesday to ensure that Muslim female students were allowed to wear hijab, when Christian leaders arrived too. “They (CAN members) thought the Alfas wanted to come and stop Christian

students from entering the school. But they later realised that the Alfas came to protect Muslim students too,” a teacher in the school told our correspondent. According to the teacher, CAN members also assumed the security operatives on ground were to intimidate Christian students which led to tension. “It took the intervention of the Oluwo Iwo, Oba Akanbi to avert crisis when CAN mobilised its members to Baptist High School Adeeke, Iwo, to ensure Christian pupils in garments and robes were not denied entrance, by security operatives who besieged the school,” the teacher added. When contacted, the Oluwo of Iwo, Oba Akanbi, said the intervention was to prevent further crisis from occurring the school, adding: “I invited the leaders and they came. I admonished them to shun violence”. However, the crisis trailing the court judgment which permits the use of Hijab by Muslim female students in the state public schools may not

Gov. Aregbesola be ending soon. Our correspondent gathered that no fewer than 10 students stormed the BHS in different church regalia. Already, Osun-CAN has said it will not rescind its directive that students should wear choir robes and church garments to schools, if the judgment is implemented. Vice Chairman of CAN in the state, Pastor Moses Ogundeji stated this while addressing journalists at a

prayer session held at the Dominion Hall of Osun Baptist Conference, Gbodofon, Osogbo, the state capital. “The governor should be ready to expel all students in the state. He should be ready to expel those wearing hijab because hijab was never part of the school uniform. “If the governor is fighting for the right of the Muslims, we will also fight for the right of the Christians,” he added. man also described the presence of security personnel around the prayer venue as an embarrassment saying CAN has concluded plans to appeal the case. “Although the judgment will be appealed, Christian pupils will continue to wear church cloths to their various schools, not minding the state governor’s warning to expel them,” he added. Governor Rauf Aregbesola late Tuesday warned that any student found wearing unauthorised cloth to school would be sanctioned and advised CAN to pursue its cause legally. While speaking at the prayer session, Ogundiya said that the prayer was meant to reject Court ruling on hijab and other ‘Islamisation plot’ in the state, explaining that the prayer was necessary to “seek peace from God and nullify anti-Kingdom laws and dealings with satanic forces that are tormenting the state for the past few weeks”. Ogundiya however noted that the prayer would ensure that Osun State was delivered
from the power of satanic forces, which he described as oppressors. The Christian leader who also called for the return of missionary schools to the original owners said, “We don’t want crisis in Osun because of hijab issue. Already, the state is being oppressed by the demonic spirit and evils as well as the country at large. ”In as much as we are trying to resolve the crisis with prayer, if government should expel any Christian pupil or student, it means all the students in public schools would be sent packing”, he added. Meanwhile, Pastor Dotun Ajileye has called on religious leaders in the state to exercise restraint with their utterances over the court ruling on Hijab. Ajileye, of Glory Ministries Chapel, Agunbelewo, Osogbo, warned that the issue may degenerate to a terrible situation if religious leaders do not dialogue. “Both religions must find a means of coming together on roundtable and discuss the way forward to ameliorate the tensed atmosphere.
