Sen. Orji, wife train 123 women August meeting: NOA calls for on skills development of families

Senator representing Abia Central Senatorial district in the Senate, Theodore Orji and his wife, Mercy, on Sunday, engaged more than 123 rural women from the district in a one-day skills acquisition training to empower them. The occasion which held at the council hall of Umuahia North LGA headquarters featured the training of the participants in soap making, both solid and liquid, custard making as well as on the sensitisation of the participants on self-control, business acumen and basic tenets of financial records. In her opening speech, the Liaison officer of Sen. T. A. Orji, who stood in for the former Abia First Lady, Hon. Ifeanyi Umuere, said the gesture was to make the women become enterprising and to be capable of assisting their husbands in the running of the affairs of the family, to be self-sufficient and to enable them become employers in the society. Mrs. Orji, who said that the training will be continued, urged the participants to ensure they imbibe the systematic training so that they can employ the experience to their own good, pointing out that what concerns his senatorial women touches her heart. She assured that she would transcend down to them dividends of democracy once it is available to her, advising the women to always assist the incumbent Abia first lady in her efforts to galvanise them for the development of the communities in the state.
Ifeanyi Umere, who also stood in for the Senator himself, said that the senator advised the women to ensure that they participate in the voter registration exercise of the INEC as well as urge their dependants and relations who have not done so to do it to enable them vote effectively in the 2019 election. According to the senator, he will continue to move for motions that will engender dividend of democracy to his constituents, the people of the state and Nigeria in general and urged them to be law abiding and support the government of the day in the state, who he described as having done well. Responding, a participant and the Woman leader of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Umuahia North, Evangelist Chidinma Ofoma, described the lectures they received as good and ‘too much” for them, stating that they would put what they have learnt into practice. She thanked Mercy Odochi Orji for the gesture, promising to support her in all her eandeavours. Also speaking, the PDP Secretary in Umuahia North and Woman Leader, Ibeku East Ward I, Nneoma Charity Akaegbu, who was visible emotional, expressed happiness over the training and prayed God to bless Mrs. Orji over the training. According to another participant and a petty trader by profession, Evelyn Nwachukwu, who is from Afara in Umuahia North LGA, the training is a big experience for her to further her business.

Ukeh, they expressed the wish of the CMO to Christianise new yam festivals in the country, especially in the South East. In an address presented to Bishop Ugorji, the CMO said: “My Lord, (as) initiated by the parish CMO, and approved by the parish priest, we celebrated New Yam festival with mass on the evening of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary this year. It is our wish that this effort will spark off a dialogue with the Traditional Rulers towards Christianising the Iri ji ceremonies in Ibeku land”. In his short speech during the CMO diocesan meeting, the immediate past CMO Chaplain, Rev. Fr. Cosmos Okafor, commended the CMO members for the support they had given to him for the past five years he served as their chaplain and charged them to keep it up.
Interacting with newsmen, the CMO of St. Mary’s Catholic parish Isieke, Parish President, Bro. John Dube Okpechi, counseled fathers to strive to devote much time for their children, especially at this era of social media with less or no time/ chance for parents who strive to make both ends meet, stating “parents, especially the father as the head of the family should try and study or monitor the lives lived by their children so that he can correct any bad attitude observed in time”. He appealed to the CMO members to always volunteer themselves in the things of God and work for the unity of the church, pointing out that any time invested in God’s work is not lost. The event witnessed the blessing of a beautiful Marian Grotto and confirmation of about 58 persons, among others.

Agency (NOA) has called on women in the South East to use the period of the August meeting to contribute meaningfully towards the development of their families and communities. The State Director National Orientation Agency (NOA) Abia State, Dr. (Mrs.) Ngozi Uduma, who made the call while speaking at this
year’s August meeting of Oguduasaa Women’s wing, Ogboro-Isuikwuato Local Government Area of Abia State, urged the women to see the annual home coming of women from all walks of life as an avenue to strengthen and enforce decision that concern the development of the women. Dr. Uduma charged the women to adopt the essential family practices of having focused antenatal care, immunisation of children against
the childhood killer diseases, exclusive breastfeeding, hand washing and proper excreta disposal for the general wellbeing of the family. In her response, the President General of Oguduasaa Women’s wing commended the National Orientation Agency and UNICEF for sensitising them on the essential family practices and pledged to diffuse the message in all their meetings as well as encourage compliance among members.

The appointees which includes Special Advisers, Senior Special Assistants and Special Assistants was contained in a released signed by the Governor’s Principal Secretary, Sir. Emma Nwabuko and announced over the state owned media outfit, Broadcasting Corporation of Abia. However, this appointment has continued to generate reactions as many who spoke to on condition of anonymity expressed shock over the endless lists of aides to the State Governor which they see as batch one. According to them, there is a doubt on where salaries of 238 aides will be sourced from when the state was yet to recover from huge burden
sioners and Local Government Staff to mention but a few. According to them, majority of the immediate past aides did not have offices and were operating under shadows of trees as over sixty percent of them were operating from their various houses and come to Government House when the Governor calls for all inclusive meeting in any of the Government House Chambers in the state, when to collect salaries or to fill forms. They revealed that some new appointees do not possess the required educational certificates while many have been recycled in various positions since 1999 to date. However, others see it as most necessary to enable the governor actualise his 2019
second term mandate. A source revealed that more names are yet to be announced, while describing the appointees as “foot soldiers” of the governor who are going to be used for 2019 election campaign that has already started in the state. The source commended the governor and urged him to ensure that the aides are empowered to do the job to enable them sustain the Abia Charter of equity, which stipulates that the governor from Abia South must complete his second tenure as those from the North and Central did. The office of the Governor’s Principal Secretary, Sir Emma Nwabuko, had since been busy with the documentation of the appointees, hence inability of newsmen to reach him for his comments.
