New Food Waste Regulations For Scotland

T

he Scottish Government’s new regulations in relation to collection of segregated materials – including food waste - will have huge implications for businesses involved in the food and hospitality sector as well as others operating canteen/ restaurant facilities. Legislation governing the collection, segregation and disposal of food waste and other materials will come into force by the end of 2013 and it’s important that all businesses make the transition in time to comply. Scottish Government intends to introduce legislation requiring separate collections for food waste. This will apply to commercial and industrial premises as well as collection of household waste by local authorities.

Recycling food waste prevents it going to landfill, where it gives off methane and carbon dioxide, contributing to climate change. Your food waste stops being waste and becomes “fuel” for anaerobic digestion producing, electricity, heat and compost. Increasing recycling is costeffective and makes good business sense. As the cost of general waste disposal increases due to landfill tax escalation, separating organic waste from general waste has become more economic and appealing. Food/catering waste can be as much as 70% of the total waste generated by a business. Diverting it from landfill will dramatically improve your recycling rate.
