WHAT’S ON

Freshers’ Week The baby of the Glasgow Uni student unions is turning 125 this year and over the course of it’s interesting history (we won’t bore you with that, we’re here to talk drinking), it has been host to plenty of impressive acts from Nirvana, Coldplay and Franz Ferdinand, to the Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Biffy Clyro and many more. The union is essentially a home away from home with no less than three bars, a club, plenty of space to chill, a coffee shop and two catering outlets, if sleeping bags were welcomed students would likely never leave. This year the freshers week line up will be taking place across Jims Bar, Champions Bar, Qudos, Scran, Food Factory and Café Twenty2, so you’ll really get to know the place. As always, Queen Margaret Union will be indulging in some healthy competition with Glasgow University Union, to try and entice new freshers to join their union, so if you think QMU will tickle your fancy check out our pick of their best events for Freshers 2015 – events happening after 6pm Monday 14 – Fri 18 are open exclusively to Freshers’ pass (£45) holders.

SAT 12TH

MON 14TH

From 2-5pm drop in to Café Twenty2 for a free coffee, who doesn’t love a freebie, and a tour of your new home union. Then at 6pm, head to Jims Bar for the HOME STUDENTS QUIZ, where you can meet plenty of other home students. If your school was anything like mine, everyone got a bit teary on the last day and wrote lovely goodbye message on each other’s shirts, plus a few d**ks, hopefully at the WELCOME T-SHIRT PARTY (9pm-3am) all your new uni mates will be more civilized... probably not though.

Worry not young freshers, as those daft things you’re really going to need but totally forgot to pack can be won at THE REALLY USEFUL QUIZ (2pm, Jim’s Bar). Then it’s time to get serious about making some new friends and show off your best chat at SPEED-MATING (4pm, Food Factory). The Champion’s Bar is a favourite for it’s pool tables so get practicing and head down at 5pm. Before the main event at 9pm, chill for a bit in Jim's Bar and see how many famous faces you can spot on the walls, then Radio One legend, SCOTT MILLS, will be bringing plenty of top tunes to entertain you and your new speedmates. He’s joined in Qudos by THAT DRUMMER, THAT DJ and local DJ GERRY LYONS.

SUN 13TH Same time, same place as Sat for a free coffee and tour. Then there’s free burgers (loving all these freebies QMU) at Jims Bar from 5-7.30pm while stocks last. If you want to keep chilling in Jim’s, feel free to do so with DJs playing in the background until 9pm. Or head to Qudos at 7.30pm for QMU LIVE FRESH MUSIC FEST to discover some of the best local up-and-coming bands, just a heads up – we have a lottttttt of talent here in Glasgow. And then the bands are followed by emo/rock/indie club night Panic.

TUES 15TH If you’re not feeling too rough after Monday night, there’s a creative writing workshop at Scran (11am), followed by plenty of chances for you to get more involved at uni, at Café Twenty2: Events Committee coffee morning is at 11, followed by the Events Committee at 12pm and then the Volunteering coffee morning at 1pm.

Then The Xcerts will be performing a special acoustic performance at the unplugged showcase (1pm, Jim’s Bar), if you totally failed during your first Speed Mating experience, dust yourself off and try again at 2pm. Then from 8pm-late, there’s live music in Qudos from some top Scottish talent including FATHERSON and THE LAFONTAINES.

WED 16TH Glasgow has a brilliant vintage scene with gorgeous boutiques and they’ll be bringing stock to the vintage and craft fair at Qudos (11am), then more opportunity to get involved with the Publications coffee morning (11am), and a Language café and pancake morning for those looking to learn a new language. At 1pm, in Jim’s Bar, you’ve got the chance to show off your singing/piano/ukulele/whatever skills with the unplugged open mic. Then if you’re starting to feel the pinch from a bustling week, try out the Big Wednesday Night Pub Quiz at 6pm in Qudos for a chance to win £200. From 9pm-2am, dance ‘till your hearts content at the silent headphone disco in Qudos.

THURS 17TH A sketch comedy show, brought to you by "Improv Teatime" – the improvised theatre society, is on from 12-1.30pm at Jim’s Bar, followed by an Aloud Spoken Word Open mic which offers the chance to show your crazy poet skills. However, the big event on Thursday is the FRESHERS’ BALL – a staple in the QMU calendar. Get fancy and head down early for the Bacardi reception at 8pm, then enjoy the live cabaret, music, casino tables, magicians and boylesque performer, TOM HARLOW.

FRI 18TH To help with the Freshers’ Ball hangover, get yourself down to Café Twenty2 at 11am for some free coffee and cake, and say "hi" to the QMU board of management, student volunteers who want to hear your thoughts – probably about the union, not just life in general. Then any mature students can meet others like them at the mature student mixer (3pm, Scran). To start exploring this new city you lucky lot get to call home, head out on the Scavenger Hunt that starts and ends at Jim's Bar, before the weekly staple that is the FUQ (Friday Union Quiz). THE MAGIC UV FOAM PARTY will be your new favourite Friday club night, this week get disgusting and covered in UV foam.

SAT 19TH There is a massive range of stalls, and free entry, at the comic and toy fair at Food Factory (11am-4pm). Then Qudos are ending freshers' week in style with ‘Subcity Presents’, brought to you by some of Glasgow’s own DJs and producers across three floors. by Courtney Hendry Online Editor
