Risk Factors for High Blood Pressure

High blood pressure, also referred to as hypertension, is a condition that affects many unknowingly, often because it has no outward symptoms. The risk factors behind its occurrence are many, and while some can be changed, it’s vital to understand them so you’re better able to reduce the risk of developing high blood pressure.

Lifestyle

Various habits can contribute to the development of high blood sugar. Eating unhealthy food, especially foods high in salt and low in potassium, is a risk factor. Additionally, consuming too much alcohol or caffeine, smoking, lack of physical activity and not getting good-quality sleep also contribute to hypertension.

Age and Family History

Blood pressure tends to increase with age, as the walls of the blood vessels naturally thicken over time. However, it’s also possible for younger people to have high blood pressure, especially if they are overweight.

Studies have also shown that high blood pressure can be a genetic issue that runs in families over generations. Ethnicity can also play a role, as high blood pressure is more common in Black people than in other racial or ethnic groups.

Aside from these factors, research also shows that social and economic factors can also increase the risk of high blood pressure.
