Treating Celiac Disease Through Diet

A strict gluten-free diet is the common treatment option for people managing celiac disease. However, cutting out gluten completely may not always be easy to accomplish, which is why it’s important to have the right information about what foods to seek out that are both healthy and cost-effective.

At a glance, food groups such as vegetables, fruits, legumes and nuts, fish and seafood, and meat and poultry are obvious choices to maintain in a diet. There are also a variety of gluten-free grains that one can consider, but these have to be carefully selected as the processing of some grains leads to contact with gluten.

Substitute Foods

It is common to find food items that typically contain gluten having gluten-free substitutes at the supermarket. Some of these are commercial products, which makes it important to always read the label carefully before purchasing. Foods made from wheat such as pasta, bread and many baked goods contain gluten. Also, it is important to remember that foods with ‘wheat-free’ labels don’t necessarily mean they are free from gluten.

Beverages

Most common beverages – including juices, sodas and sports drinks – are gluten-free. Wine is also generally considered to be free from gluten, but some types (those with added flavouring or produced from barley malt) may contain gluten. Alcoholic beverages tend to be gluten-free.
